In today’s news, USAID supports response to Ebola in Democratic Republic of the Congo, European Space Agency funds planetary defense research, China pledges to be carbon neutral by 2060, Malta installs self-service machines for recycling plastic bottles, philanthropist gives all his wealth to charities and universities, classic British sweets have new plant-based recipe, and conservationists in Myanmar revive turtles thought to be extinct.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) receives additional support from United States.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health announced the 11th outbreak of Ebola in the DRC, once again in Equateur Province. This is the region that experienced 54 cases of the disease two years ago. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has responded with a contribution of US$15 million, which makes a total of more than US$365 million in assistance to the DRC and neighboring countries since August 2018. The new funding will be used for public health surveillance, transportation of patients, training to reduce infections at health facilities, promotion of safe and dignified burials as well as spreading information on how infections can be prevented and treated. The United States is a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion laureate. Our heartfelt gratitude, USAID! May your noble efforts bring relief to those who are suffering and help put an end to all zoonotic illnesses, in Heaven’s compassion.

Consortium led by Germany wins contract to launch specialized mission.

The European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will explore the possibility of deflecting asteroids that pose an impact risk to our planet. ESA has awarded almost €130 million to German space company OHB, which is coordinating the efforts of 17 countries to produce Hera – a space probe designed to study a double asteroid called Didymos. NASA will first send a sacrificial spacecraft to slam into the larger asteroid’s moon. Hera will follow up to map the resulting crater, measure the moon’s mass and collect other information that will determine whether the technique can change an asteroid’s trajectory and safeguard our world from a collision. Thank you, European Space Agency and NASA, for your forward-looking enterprise! May all earthlings be protected and blessed with fulfilling lives in the embrace of the Providence.

Up next, China pledges to be carbon neutral by 2060. We’ll take a moment to thank the web analysts, who remedy website design issues to increase page views, improve the user experience and maximize web server security. Please stay tuned to Supreme Master Television for more encouraging news.

Good day, smart viewers! I’m Bella the vegan Roughback Batfish. Did you know that photosynthesis uses energy from the sun to create carbohydrates and amino acids? So, you don’t need to consume animals; get your vitality directly from plants. Just try it for a while and feel the difference! Here’s a tip for making your own glue from discarded polystyrene foam – a widely used plastic that takes forever to biodegrade. All you need is a glass jar with a lid, pure orange oil and a mixing stick. Cut or tear the foam into small pieces and put them in the jar. Add several drops of orange oil on top of the foam. Start stirring the contents of the jar with a stick. The orange oil will gradually dissolve the foam into a sticky liquid that is somewhat transparent. That’s it! The consistency of your glue will depend on how much orange oil you use. Just be sure to put the lid on the jar tightly, to keep it from drying out. Thank you for your attention, and lots of love for Being Veg and Going Green 2 Save the Planet for all humans and us all co-inhabitants. Now it’s time for the worldwide weather.

China’s leader calls for “green revolution.”

Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly remotely in September 2020, His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of China, said his country will upscale its Paris climate accord commitments. He intends to adopt more stringent environmental policies and build a carbon-neutral economy by 2060. With reference to the coronavirus pandemic, he stated, “Humankind can no longer afford to ignore the repeated warnings of nature.” The government of China is a Shining World Leadership Award for Wise Governance recipient, as well as a Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Compassionate Protection and Wildlife-Protection laureate. Our delighted applause, President Xi Jinping, for your steadfast determination to do what is right and lead by example. May other industrial nations consider setting their climate goals higher for the safety of our planet, in Divine benediction.

Island nation pursues strategies to reduce plastic waste.

The Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning in Malta is investing €15 million in a bottle collection program. Within the next 14 months, 350 reverse vending machines will be installed around Malta and Gozo for people to return empty drink containers and get a small refund. Meanwhile, a new plastic bottle recycling center will be built near the country’s southernmost coast, ultimately adding approximately 60 permanent green jobs. The government is also moving forward with plans to phase out single-use plastics. Way to go, Malta, on your intelligent scheme that will benefit both the environment and the economy. May your eco-endeavor help to preserve the beauty of your islands and the happiness of your people, in God's boundless love.

Former billionaire is glad to see his fortune well spent.

In 1982, business was booming for Chuck Feeney’s duty-free shopping empire, but he felt a responsibility to help others with his wealth. He secretly established a foundation called the Atlantic Philanthropies, which allowed him to anonymously make donations to charities and universities. In addition to his business savvy, Mr. Feeney has led a remarkably frugal life. He does not own a home or a car, and has only one pair of shoes. Finally, after 38 years, he has achieved his original goal: His foundation has distributed all its money, and he is still here to see the impact of giving away US$8 billion. He has walked his own talk by “giving while living” – making a difference sooner rather than later. We heartily commend your unbridled philanthropy, Chuck Feeney! May your actions inspire other tycoons to follow suit, in Celestial upliftment. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present the Shining World Compassion Award to Chuck Feeney, with high esteem, praises and gratitude for your generous heart, in Divine love. May Heaven shield your life and uplift your soul.”

Coming up, classic British sweets have new plant-based recipe. We will take a moment to journal our positive feelings and inspired ideas – maybe some words of wisdom too. Famous fruit-flavored candies are now vegan-friendly.

British brothers Henry and Joseph Rowntree, together with French confectioner Claude Gaget, introduced their Fruit Pastilles in 1881. The product’s success enabled Rowntree’s to transform from a small family business into a large-scale manufacturer that has since brought an extensive range of innovative products to market. But the pastilles always contained gelatin, an animal-sourced ingredient, and many people asked the company to upgrade the recipe for vegans. Meg Miller, brand manager for Rowntree’s, has recently announced the firm’s response: “We want the brand to be enjoyed by as many consumers as possible and so we are delighted to be able to introduce our new, vegan-friendly recipe across the full range of sweets.” Wonderful advancement, Rowntree’s! May you gain not only additional customers, but extra blessings from the Divine for aligning your treats with the world’s plant-based trend.

Reptile species rescued from extinction.

The Burmese roofed turtle – which looks like it is always smiling – is native to Myanmar, but by the end of the last century it seemed there might not be any left. Fortunately, in the early 2000s, conservationists found two small populations and began monitoring their nests in river sandbanks. The Myanmar Forest Department collaborated with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA), both headquartered in the United States, to collect eggs along the Chindwin River and incubate them safely at a remote village. According to WCS, the protected population of aquatic animals is now approaching 1,000. As mature individuals are reintroduced to their native rivers, scientists are seeing more eggs being deposited and are confident the species will make a comeback. Three cheers, Myanmar Forest Department and all conservationist partners. May the friendly and herbivorous turtles thrive and be safeguarded in Heaven’s grace.

Some say laughter is the best medicine, so let’s have a good dose with a joke of the day entitled, “Coffee Habit.”

A guy entered a coffeehouse and ordered three espressos. The barista, named Jenny, was concerned that the drinks would cool off before the man finished drinking them.

“Excuse me, sir, but your espressos will be at the right temperature if you order them one at a time.”

“It’s OK, I’ll alternate between them. You see, I have two brothers who moved overseas recently. Before they left, we decided to continue having coffee together once a week. So, right now, my brothers are doing exactly the same thing.”

Jenny understood and learned that the guy’s name was Nick. Every week, she greeted him when he arrived and prepared three espressos. One day, about two months later, Nick came in looking a little sad.

“What’s the matter, Nick?”

“Just make two espressos for me today, Jenny.”

“Oh my goodness, I’m terribly sorry for your loss, Nick.”

“What?! Oh no, both of my brothers are fine. But my doctor said I should stop drinking coffee.”
