United States provides more aid to flood-affected in Pakistan.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) further contributed US$30 million, and together with its partners, will supply Pakistanis in urgent need with safe water, food, nutrition, cash transfers, shelter and sanitation. Pakistan was inundated with torrential monsoon rainfall, triggering landslides, overflowing lakes, and severe flooding that sadly resulted in over 1,100 fatalities. It crippled the country, affecting 33 million people and causing serious destruction that damaged the infrastructure and more than a million houses. Over two million acres of farmland was rendered unusable. Experts will continue to assess the dire situation in collaboration with local partners.

Researchers find nearby planet that may host life.
An international team of astronomers has discovered two planets located just 100 light years away orbiting a star called LP 890-9. It is hoped that one of them could support life as it is located in the habitable zone. One of the planets is 30% larger than Earth, the other 40%, and they complete an orbit of their star in 2.7 and 8.5 days respectively. The discovery was made using the SPECULOOS telescopes, which are specially configured to search for exoplanets that are potentially habitable, depending on whether they have the correct temperature to house liquid water and living beings. Students in Nigeria create mobile app to promote environmental awareness.
Three Nigerian teens, Angel Chukwudi Denis, Fortune Somuadina, and Favour Chibuike established the planet-protecting organization Eco Elixirs, to create awareness about urgent environmental issues. Their app, called EarthExp, combines social networking and a simple game where users have to create a city, but need to consider how their actions affect the environment as the city develops. The app also provides a news feed and a trends page, allowing users to take part in storytelling about climate actions, and learn the importance of balance between development and conservation. EarthExp was one of the senior division regional winners in the 2022 US-based non-profit Technovation global competition. Kudos, team Eco Elixirs, on your creative application! Australian scientists find evidence of ancient coral reef in the desert.
Researchers from Curtin University’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Australia, recently discovered evidence that the Nullarbor Plain, a desert in South Australia, once hosted an ocean and tropical reef. The discovery was made using high resolution satellite imagery and field work. The reef existed 14 million years ago in the Cenozoic period, during a time when the land was covered in tropical forests. Measuring approximately 1200 meters in diameter, the reef has a dome shape in the middle, and is surrounded by a circular elevated rim. Such interesting news, researchers from Curtin University’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, on the existence of an ancient reef in the Australian desert. American philanthropist supports charities across the country.
Mackenzie Scott, author, advocate for the homeless, and philanthropist, donated two Beverley Hills, Los Angeles properties valued at US$55 million to the non-profit California Community Foundation (CCF). The revenue raised from the sale of the mansions will continue to provide affordable housing grants for homeless LA residents well into the future. CCF is liaising with businesses and tradespeople, to ensure 10,000 housing units will be built in the city by 2026. CCF also assists migrants arriving in Los Angeles. In 2021, Ms. Scott not only contributed US$20 million to CCF, to establish the LA Arts Endowment Fund, but also US$2.7 billion to almost 300 organizations, among other donations. First ever European Vegan Summit recently took place online.
The European Vegan Summit was held with the goal of encouraging lawmakers in Brussels, Belgium, towards a “future without animal exploitation.” The event, which was hosted by the Polish organization Beyond Animal, was attended by a number of distinguished members of parliament (MEPs), lawmakers, scientists, investors and more. One of the key requests of the summit was that the EU adopt the Plant Based Treaty, which will transition the region from animal-people products to vegan food products, by shifting financial resources towards plant-based agriculture. A total prohibition on advertising milk, meat and eggs was also recommended, while the Dutch city of Haarlem in the Netherlands has in fact recently banned animal-meat advertising in public areas. Special road signs introduced for protection of hedgehog-people in Poland.
Last year, Wrocław, Poland’s road authority, asked residents to vote on the best sign for warning drivers to watch out for passing hedgehog-people. The selected sign includes a figure of a hedgehog-person in a black outline with the words “Warning Hedgehogs” ahead. The authority began setting up the road signs in March and will install more according to the citizens’ suggestions. The recommendations will be reviewed with the consultancy of EKOSTRAŻ, a local rescue group devoted to saving hedgehog-people. Promotion Coordinator of the group, Marta Zienkiewicz said, “I would also add to that the moral obligation of caring for them since they are living beings which live together with us in cities.” Our gratitude, Wrocław’s road authority and EKOSTRAŻ, for your noble efforts to save our beautiful hedgehog-people.
