Germany supports internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq.
Germany has contributed €8 million to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which will go towards humanitarian aid for thousands of internally displaced families and returnees across Iraq. This contribution is crucial in providing ongoing care such as protection services and cash assistance. The generous donation demonstrates Germany’s commitment to supporting IDPs in Iraq, and bring the country’s total contribution to UNHCR to over €185 million since 2014. Africa certified as free of wild polio.
The Africa Regional Certification Commission confirmed that the World Health Organization’s African Region, consisting of 47 countries, is now officially free from wild polio, or naturally occurring polio. The announcement comes after four years without a case in the region, signifying that 90% of the world’s population, or five of the six World Health Organization regions, is now free from this form of the virus. This achievement was made following a promise by African leaders in 1996 to eradicate the serious health issue, which has since involved the immunizations of some 220 million children every year. Congratulations, African nations, World Health Organization, and all involved, for helping to end polio in the African Region. Australia increases cigarette taxes again.
The Australian government recently raised the tax on cigarettes by 12.5%, the second increase this year. With the highest tobacco prices in the world, a pack of 20 cigarettes in the country now costs US$25 or more. The government hopes to discourage the detrimental habit through taxation, and has seen the rate of smoking in the country decline from 20% in 2001 to around 14% in 2018. Now, in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, four times as many smokers in Australia have tried to stop the habit due to health concerns of the virus affecting smokers more seriously. Australia is a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion recipient and a Shining World Leadership Awards for Health Guardian and High Moral Value laureate. People experiencing homelessness in the United Kingdom given smartphones during COVID-19 pandemic.
UK charity organization Crisis, dedicated to helping people living without homes, in partnership with UK-headquartered mobile phone company, Tesco Mobile, will give away over £700,000 worth of smartphones and data, over 12 months, to homeless individuals. Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive of Crisis, explained, “Access to a phone or the internet has been vital for so many people throughout the pandemic to stay connected.” The phones will help users access essential support services, claim income relief, and search for much-needed jobs. United States celebrity goes vegetarian after request from daughter.
Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel, from the show Real Housewives of New York City, recently transitioned to being vegetarian after her 10-year-old daughter Bryn Hoppy asked if they could adopt the diet together. “Bryn wants to be a vegetarian [be]cause she loves animals, so she’s asked me to do it with her,” Ms. Frankel stated on her Instagram story, along with photos of her food, which included a cauliflower-based pizza and vegan tacos. Way to go, Bryn Hoppy for encouraging your mom to adopt a veg diet. Kudos, Bethenny Frankel for supporting your daughter. In God’s grace, may you both help to inspire others to step up and choose the noble vegan way of living, as we honor the sacred lives of our gentle animal friends.
Non-profit helps stray animals in India have access to safe drinking water.
Founded in 2017 by Lakshman Molleti of Hyderabad, India, the Animals Welfare Bowl Project (AWBP) has distributed 3,500 free water bowls to individuals committed to caring for thirsty, stray animals, including wild birds. Volunteers are required to keep the bowl clean, fill it with water daily, and inspire others by posting pictures on social media of animals using the bowl. AWBP currently operates in the states of Telangana and Maharashtra, where they hold educational activities on the importance of animal welfare. Mr. Molleti, a vegan, said, “This world will be more balanced if every human on this planet lives a simple lifestyle and supports all animals equally.” Heaven’s blessings, Lakshman Molleti and the Animals Welfare Bowl Project, for your love and devotion to serving our animal co-inhabitants.
