At the age of 21 Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His doctors thought he would not live past the age of 23. This life-altering prognosis cause Stephen to stop and contemplate his purpose and meaning in life. He began to work in earnest for the betterment of the entire human race.
