So, by living my life that ‘every being thrives,’ it’s important for me to vocalize how to do that.” Kate Strong lives a highly active life, showing others through example that a plant-based wholefoods diet is healthy, tasty and available in every corner of the world. Kate’s encouraging support of staying in a positive frame of mind and living for the moment inspires many followers to let go of old habits and embrace a higher way of life. She teaches that we are the only ones who can change ourselves today, and not to wait for outside circumstances to change first. With this mindset, the outside circumstances change automatically.

Benjamin Timmler, a teenager, from Hof in Bavaria, Germany, wrote a vegan cookbook called “Grün Kerlchen” or “The Little Green Guy” at age of 14. What started as a school project, made its way onto a crowdfunding platform so that more people could benefit from not only the recipes, but the message behind the book, which is to love and care for animals, the environment and ourselves. Whoever made a contribution to help with the publication of the vegan cookbook received a printed version of it. Today, we will continue our tribute to British endurance runner Fiona Oakes for her extraordinary accomplishments as an athlete and an animal rights advocate. For over two decades, Fiona has devoted her life to rescuing animals and promoting the benevolent vegan lifestyle. She cares for over 600 rescue animals at her animal sanctuary, Tower Hill Stables Sanctuary in Essex, England. Despite the 15-hour workdays and exhausting labor the sanctuary entails, she still finds the time and energy to maintain a strenuous regimen of training runs needed to compete on the world stage. “It is all done for the animals. My running I do to promote veganism, the sanctuary I do to nurture animals. And I’ve been vegan since I was six years old – completely self-inspired decision; my parents weren’t (vegan) at that time. So, my whole life has been pretty much dedicated to helping animals in some shape or form.” “And there’s so much you can learn from animals. Animals are a great leveler and a great teacher if you can listen to their message.” “With regards to the running, I run 9 times a week, about 100 miles (161 km) a week. That is really, really, tough to fit in at the level I am doing.” Thankfully, Fiona has help from some family members and a few volunteers. Two pillars of strength in her life are her mother, Meg and her life-partner, Martin. Fiona is also concerned about the disproportionately high environmental cost of animal-based food relative to plant-based food. In a recent Facebook posting on January 7, 2020, she wrote: “I quote Joseph Poore of Oxford University, ‘A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gasses, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use.’”

Although Kate lived a privileged life of comfort in her youth, her first sight of others in famine brought her to tears, and a deep-seated passion to serve and improve the quality of life for all beings was deeply instilled in her life values. Kate Strong has a befitting name for a motivation speaker and coach, but Kate explains that mental flexibility is also a strength, or even placing oneself in a situation that we haven’t experienced before and following our hearts. “Being strong isn’t being forceful. Being strong is actually a shift in consciousness. So, we need to step away from the win/lose model. We need to step away from telling, you know, forcefully doing things. I think the strongest thing we can do is pause, reflect and start listening to our heart. Everywhere in the world, we’re seeing more logical ways of being. We need to start feeling things, we need to go with the hearts leading, rather than our body being used as a vehicle to carry our all-important heads.” Supreme Master Ching Hai also agrees that even after enlightenment, one must make an effort to help the planet and all beings in every way possible, whether it be sharing good news or contributing in any positive way possible. “Sometimes, I go to a different restaurant outside, Thai restaurant, something special, I bought a lot, bring home to the staff. And every day I give some $100 Hong Kong Dollars to the cleaner in my room. I hide it inside the towel. So, whenever she takes the towel, ‘Ah!’ Surprised. I said, ‘Thank you for cleaning my room. God bless.’” “Make the best of your time when you’re out, smiling to people, strangers. ‘Hallo,’ ‘good day,’ whatever. Say hallo to your taxi driver, ask him if he is OK, wish him luck for his business. Shake hands with your doorman, your concierge, where you live, in your building. Say hallo, smile big. Bring him a piece of (vegan) chocolate or something. Make the best of your time. Spread love. Don’t be afraid. That’s what you should do.” Kate Strong takes these words to heart as she makes it a daily habit to lift people’s moods and bring a smile wherever she may be.

And I have to tell you, that this was the best decision I have ever made in my life, because since that day I have been able to sleep every single night peacefully, knowing that o animals had to be killed for me to lead my life or me to pursue my dreams. It was a chance encounter in 2009, where I actually found that climbing mountains was the calling of my life. Mt. Everest simply cannot be conquered. It is always the mountain that decides whether you are going to make it to the top. So, it was during this journey, that I overcame so many of my self-doubts, so many of my limitations, and I conquered myself.”
