On today’s episode, we meet the highly respected medical doctor, scientist, nutritionist, biostatistician and author from France, Dr. Jérôme Bernard-Pellet. After observing that hospital wards were filled with patients suffering from diseases such as cancers, diabetes, and kidney failure, Dr. Bernard-Pellet decided to conduct intensive research into preventative medicine, with a focus on the relationship between nutrition and health. At first, he was skeptical about the benefits of the vegan lifestyle. After conducting extensive research, Jérôme became an enthusiastic advocate of the vegan diet. He now actively encourages his patients to adopt this lifestyle to improve their health. One question he is frequently asked is, “Should my newborn child be vegan?” “The advice for children is much the same as for adults. So, we encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies. It really is the best food for the baby. If you can't or don't want to breastfeed, well, there are infant formulas that have a soy milk or rice milk base. And therefore, it is quite possible to be a vegan from birth.”Dr. Bernard-Pellet works tirelessly to spread the vegan message to his colleagues, other medical doctors and the general public through his lectures, interviews, and books. In an interview with the magazine “Antidote,” he noted that, when it comes to prevention of disease, the vegan diet remains the best medicine. He confirms that a whole food, plant-based diet helps prevent many kinds of diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative conditions. Dr. Bernard-Pellet is delighted to report that veganism is growing rapidly in France. One indicator of this growth was the first VeggieWorld Fair held in Marseille in December 2017. We end our show today with a parting message from Dr. Jérôme Bernard-Pellet. “My wish for the future is that there is a compassion that is created between all beings, so that it becomes obvious that there is no need to eat animals. All will be much better, including humans and, of course, planet Earth.”

In 2013 Tal Gilboa co-founded “Israel Animal Liberation Front” which was renamed “Total Liberation Israel” in 2018. This is one of the fastest growing social movements of our time calling for the total liberation of animals everywhere through marches, rallies and blockading trucks to the slaughter houses etc. The animal justice movement is increasingly attracting adherents across Israel and the activism is paving the way for a new era in animal rights. Besides various initiatives including creative protests and demonstrations, Tal Gilboa was also delivering lectures to diverse audiences: from high-school students to the military, business and political decision-makers. Her passion for animal causes took her to face unchartered territory, to compete for the first time and won the 6th edition of the intense contest of HaAh HaGadol. “Half a million people changed their diet while I was there. Today, let us head to Paris for a tour of Land & Monkeys. We are fortunate that Mr. Landemaine will be our personal guide! "In a French boulangerie-pâtisserie, there are four trades. There’s the salty part for lunch; there’s the sweet part with the pastries; there’s the viennoiserie for breakfast; then, there’s the bread." Mr. Landemaine will now show us some of his sandwich offerings. "We substituted all the animal products (with vegan ones), and we manage to have 200 customers come in for lunch in this small eatery." Mr. Landemaine says that the most popular sandwich at Land & Monkeys is the Campagnard, or the “Rustic.” It is a sandwich that contains his homemade “pâté.” "People don’t even realize it’s a vegan 'pâté.' Now, we incorporate hazelnuts, lentils, and so on, to produce a vegan 'pâté,' and the end-result is extraordinary. For the pastry part, the sweet part, we kept the great classics of French bakery: fresh fruit tartlets, lemon meringue tartlets, and there is the chocolate cake with 100% cocoa.” “And for the bread, we have breads from all over the world, namely, the signature breads of each country; for example, the German 'schwartz brot,' the 'sourdough bread' of Anglo-Saxon countries, the Italian 'focaccia,' the French 'baguette.' We use 100% organic flours milled from ancient wheat.” “We urgently need to make this switch. 70 billion (land) animals are eaten every year. This is such an astronomical number, which is not even quantifiable by the common mortal, There is an absolute urgency for ecological reasons, for ethical reasons, and for health reasons to switch to a predominantly plant-based diet. For me, my initiative as a baker is to contribute a small piece of the puzzle, but we need millions of people to come together, so that very, very quickly, humanity approaches a diet of veganism. Today, it is our privilege to feature one of the top ultra-endurance athletes on the planet, Fiona Oakes, from Essex, England, UK. Fiona is one of the greatest athletes in the world judging by her records. She is the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest female in cumulative time to complete a marathon within the Antarctic Circle, as well as on the other six continents, at 23 hours, 27 minutes and 40 seconds. She also holds the Guinness World Records for the fastest female to complete a marathon on each of the seven continents plus the North Pole, in both aggregate time (28 hours, 20 minutes, and 50 seconds) and elapsed time (225 days and 18 hours). Fiona has been dubbed the “Queen of the Extreme” by her peers due to her grit in some of the most challenging races in the world. “I didn’t take to running because I wanted to run, I wanted to promote veganism and the benefits of a plant-based diet. I realized, I can rescue animals, and I can deliver harmonic existence for those in my care, but for the billions out there who are suffering, I can’t touch. How do I do that? And that was when I formulated the idea of going out and running. The reason was I wanted a platform to speak out.” “There was no social media at the time; the only thing that I was fairly good at was sports, but not running, but the only attention in sports for women was Paula Radcliffe who was running the marathon, and it had all kinds of hashtags, if you like. This is the toughest event in the athletic calendar, and if you can complete a marathon you can do anything.” Today, at the age of 51. Fiona’s running career remains in full swing. It is safe to say that she has proven what she had set out to prove: that a lifelong plant-based diet can sustain the highest levels of sports performance and physical health: “I am living proof of it, I’ve been running now for 20 years. Although Kate lived a privileged life of comfort in her youth, her first sight of others in famine brought her to tears, and a deep-seated passion to serve and improve the quality of life for all beings was deeply instilled in her life values. Kate Strong has a befitting name for a motivation speaker and coach, but Kate explains that mental flexibility is also a strength, or even placing oneself in a situation that we haven’t experienced before and following our hearts. “Being strong isn’t being forceful. Being strong is actually a shift in consciousness. So, we need to step away from the win/lose model. We need to step away from telling, you know, forcefully doing things. I think the strongest thing we can do is pause, reflect and start listening to our heart. Everywhere in the world, we’re seeing more logical ways of being. We need to start feeling things, we need to go with the hearts leading, rather than our body being used as a vehicle to carry our all-important heads.” Supreme Master Ching Hai also agrees that even after enlightenment, one must make an effort to help the planet and all beings in every way possible, whether it be sharing good news or contributing in any positive way possible. “Sometimes, I go to a different restaurant outside, Thai restaurant, something special, I bought a lot, bring home to the staff. And every day I give some $100 Hong Kong Dollars to the cleaner in my room. I hide it inside the towel. So, whenever she takes the towel, ‘Ah!’ Surprised. I said, ‘Thank you for cleaning my room. God bless.’” “Make the best of your time when you’re out, smiling to people, strangers. ‘Hallo,’ ‘good day,’ whatever. Say hallo to your taxi driver, ask him if he is OK, wish him luck for his business. Shake hands with your doorman, your concierge, where you live, in your building. Say hallo, smile big. Bring him a piece of (vegan) chocolate or something. Make the best of your time. Spread love. Don’t be afraid. That’s what you should do.” Kate Strong takes these words to heart as she makes it a daily habit to lift people’s moods and bring a smile wherever she may be.

Veganism has exploded in the last decade, and its rise in popularity is changing the landscape of artisan baking as well. Today, it is our pleasure to explore this coming of age of vegan baking as an artform, we are fortunate to catch up with the award-winning baker & pastry Chef Rodolphe Landemaine of France, at this 100% vegan bakery in Paris, “Land and Monkeys.” Prior to enrolling in the Compagnons du Devoir and Tour de France, Rodolpphe learned the fundamentals of his craft at the vocational school CEPROC (the European Center for Culinary Professions). After six years of education and training, Chef Landemaine opened his first bakery in Paris at the age of 27. In 2014, at the height of his career, Chef Landemaine had an epiphany that would take his life in a new direction. At the time, Rodolphe was a vegetarian in the tradition of his family. “So, I reflected on it all a bit, and it became clear. I became vegan in my heart.” One year after turning vegan, Chef Landemaine set to work looking for ways to veganize the baked goods in his bakery chain. He gradually increased the number of vegan offerings in his stores, with the goal of eventually turning them all fully vegan. “For us, it was really important to say: ‘We want to keep the signature items and classics of the French gastronomy and make them vegan, to show everyone that it is not just a dream, that it is possible to succeed in making these pastries vegan.’” During that time, he also conceived the idea of opening a fully vegan pilot store from scratch. The result was the launch of the 100% vegan bakery “Land and Monkeys” in February 2020, in the heart of Paris. The store has received rave reviews both from the public and his peers.
