COP26 Report: Veganism the Top– Most-Important– Solution for Halting Climate Change, Part 1 of 2

From October 31 to November 12, 2021, 120 world leaders and more than 40,000 participants gathered in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 26th United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) to discuss climate change and ways to stop it. First, we’ll hear from Ed Gemmell, Managing Director of Scientists Warning Europe, a global organization representing the views of thousands of climate change experts. “There have been four great scientists’ warnings to humanity: 1992, 2017, 2019, and eight days ago. All of the warnings mentioned our diet. And in the latest warning it endorses a massive change in diet for us on the planet. We have to reduce the methane emissions coming from agriculture. And the best way to do it is to move away from subsidizing and helping the methane-producing meat and dairy processing plants and farms.” “Trillions of tons of ice have disappeared over the 29-year period. The burning of fossil fuels and the raising of animals for food has spewed billions of tons of heat-trapping gases into the air, and hundreds of thousands of people have died from this heat. Islands are sinking, glaciers are melting, earthquakes and weather disasters like hurricanes are stoked by climate change. All of us have been watching in horror the destruction of the plant kingdom, the poisoning of our food and water, the killing of helpful bugs and insects and defenseless animals, and the killing of humans.” During his speech, Dr. Rao quoted from Supreme Master Ching Hai’s climate change books, “Love is the Only Solution,” and “From Crisis to Peace.” “In the book, ‘Love is the Only Solution,’ She says, ‘You may ask what is the main cause of this damage and destruction to the environment? Perhaps surprisingly, it's not the coal industry or cars or planes or trains or boats or ships. It’s methane, which is produced primarily by the livestock industry.’ So, if the livestock industry is the primary cause of this disastrous situation we find ourselves in, the solution is easy, isn't it? We must change our diet.” For several decades, our most beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has worked tirelessly to remind us that there is only one solution to climate change: the global adoption of the vegan lifestyle. “A vegan diet will stop 80% of global warming, stop all the cruelty, beginning on our plate, generating loving, kind energy around the world. Stop water shortages and water pollution. Stop food shortages. Stop world hunger and war, prevent deadly diseases. Save enormous tax and medical bills to build a better world, and support new, useful inventions and good people's organization. The list goes on and on. We all want to have a peaceful world, and we all talk about how we want peace and love. Well, I think we should start it now and let peace begin on our plates. Let love begin with our choice. All the benefits of a vegan diet cannot be overstated.”

Ocean Warming: A Call to End the Climate Crisis, Part 3 of 3

Ocean Warming: A Call to End the Climate Crisis, Part 3 of 3

On today’s program we’ll explore how ocean warming is also contributing to extreme weather events. Warmer waters in both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean have spawned some of the strongest storms on the planet. The warmer the water, the more chaotic and extreme the weather event will be. Supreme Master Ching Hai also told this in the conference, which took place in Orizaba on November 16, 2009. “Speaking of disasters in particular, the rising intensity and frequency of storms comes from the warming of the ocean which changes weather patterns. This past decade saw several such devastating events, like Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which took the lives of nearly 20,000 Central American brethren, as well as Mexican fellow citizens.” During the summer of 2020, global ocean temperatures reached record highs, with sea surface temperatures being consistently 1-2 degrees Celsius above normal. In September, around the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the coast of Africa, where many storms develop, these anomalies increased to 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal, as various countries experienced a record number of super-charged storms, cyclones, and hurricanes. Research scientist Dr. Kátia Fernandes has shown that ocean temperatures play a critical role in setting the stage for wildfires. Dr. Fernandes developed an “Interactive Mapping Tool” that shows the relationship between sea surface temperatures in the northern tropical Atlantic and wildfires in the Amazon rain forest. The warmer the water, the further north the rainfall is pulled. Supreme Master Ching Hai frequently warns about the many dangers of climate change and recommends the quickest most efficient solution: global adoption of the vegan lifestyle. “If we don’t change our disaster-breeding, provoking way, then disasters will never end. I am also in tears whenever there is a natural disaster anywhere in the world. My heart aches for the suffering of the people. I feel what they feel, and I am very, very much saddened. But we can only stop the disaster once and for all by tackling the root problem; that is, by stopping the killing of humans, and mass murdering of innocent animal lives. Only when we walk in peace and love on this Earth will the Earth and nature respond peacefully to us. If we protect others, we will be protected.”

The Amazon Rainforest: The Lungs of Our Planet in Dire Straits!

The Amazon Rainforest: The Lungs of Our Planet in Dire Straits!

The Amazon Rainforest, known throughout the world as the Lungs of our Planet, is in trouble. According to a study conducted by Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the rainforest in Brazil released about 20% more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere than it absorbed over the period from 2010-2019. How did this happen? “Like other tropical forests, the Amazon is threatened by climate change and deforestation. An area the size of Taiwan is lost every year, mainly due to the expansion of pastures for beef production.” The researchers also believe that climate change has interfered with the rainfall in Brazil. Now scientists and organizations are findings ways to restore the Amazon Forest. “The Amazon is very near the tipping point of savannization. We have to find a way to get deforestation and forest degradation to zero very soon, in a few years, and also to restore huge areas. This is our great challenge; we have to save the Amazon.” The root cause of the Amazon forest’s destruction is meat consumption. Supreme Master Ching Hai explained the impact of livestock raising on the Amazon and how to recover it in a media interview with Irish Journalist Dr. Ben Murnane. “Eighty percent of the Amazon’s deforested lands are converted to grazing pastures for cattle-people. Of the remaining deforested land, the majority is used for growing soy. Eighty-five percent of the world’s soy is fed to the cattle-people that will be slaughtered for human consumption. So, the Amazon’s destruction is clearly linked to meat production. The melting in Antarctica can also be directly related to livestock raising, again because the heat-trapping potential of methane being so much higher than CO2. In addition, 60% of the black carbon that was found accelerating the Antarctic melt was coming from the burning of rainforest for livestock raising. Everything points in the same direction; that is, meat diet. If we stop consuming animal-people products, much of this lethal source is eliminated and the heat it creates will also disappear. In fact, along with stopping meat consumption we all need to pray for forgiveness. This, too, is part of the Earth’s recovery, the awareness of the suffering caused by humanity and the true desire to reverse this action and to do good instead.”

The Intelligence and Spirituality of Plants and Trees, Part 2 of 2

The Intelligence and Spirituality of Plants and Trees, Part 2 of 2

Did you know that trees are connected by a complex hidden underground network? The trees’ root systems, called mycorrhizal networks, act as neural networks that transmit messages. The fine, hair-like root tips of trees connect together with microscopic fungal filaments to form the basic links of the network. Our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has this message to share with us about trees. “Some trees are at a very high spiritual level. You have no idea. The Fifth Level. Some trees are very big and very spiritual. That's why many people meditate under trees. They feel good there. Some parks have smaller trees. Even though they're not at a high level, if they're at the Third Level, they already make us feel good. They stand there to protect the world, to stabilize our world, and to provide oxygen. They absorb CO2. It's a way to absorb (bad) karma and give blessings.” In one of Professor Simrad’s interview sessions she states, “Our worldview is wrong. We view the world as this bunch of parts, and we think we can dissect it all and put it back together the way we want and expect it to work. But it doesn’t work. Many Aboriginal people view the trees as their people, just as they view the wolves and the bears and the salmon as their relations. We’ve got to get back to that.” Let’s now conclude our show with this important message from Supreme Master Ching Hai. “The trees are helping us. Now we must protect them. They have been protecting us all these hundreds, thousands of years, so we and our children, father, mother, relatives, friends, can live and breathe and survive. And now they are in danger, because of humans’ pollution, and not caring for the planet. So, we must help them now. We are vegan, it’s a very big help. We also tell others to be vegan, to protect all living beings on this planet, so that we can continue to live. Also, we return their kindness, in gratitude. Also, we thank you for our children, and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, because we have to protect the planet, the trees, the ocean, the river, not just for us, not for our children, great-grandchildren, but, because we learn now to be more compassionate, more loving and kind to all beings.”

Dr. Peter Carter (vegan): There IS a Solution to Climate Change, Part 2 of 2

In today’s program Dr. Carter speaks about a dangerous feedback loop produced by climate change: the ever-increasing number of wildfires occurring around the world. “I was absolutely shocked to my core. Because just earlier this month, we had more fires in the Amazon than I've ever seen, like, way, way, way more. And this is early in the Amazon fire season. These fires produce massive amounts of carbon dioxide, but also a lot of methane. And also, of course, black carbon soot going up in the air.”Dr. Carter warns that Earth’s situation has reached an absolutely critical level, and that we must take immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “If we continue to emit, there's no question, no question about what's going to happen. The Earth is going to become an intolerable place to live in, with intolerable heat waves. But those heat waves won't just be intolerable; they will trash our crops.”“We're looking at billions of people not able to survive because of starvation, water deprivation. And then of course, you pile on the diseases. For many, many, many years, the infectious disease experts, we’ve just had an experience of it with COVID-19, have warned us that all of the infectious and communicable diseases are going to be increased by putting up the global temperature. And lots of floods. It's a suicidal recipe.”Scientific evidence shows that the number one cause of global warming is raising livestock, which creates more greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation and the burning of fossil fuels combined. Thus, despite his grave concerns about climate change, Dr. Carter believes there is a simple, highly effective solution to the current crisis. “The most effective, definitely effective, immediately effective, readily doable action that everybody in the world can do is go vegan. In theory, we can all do that. If we do that, emissions drop immediately. And we know, and the research confirms that in all aspects, organic agriculture, mixed with hedgerows, woodlots, is the best form of agriculture.”

Industrial Mining: Damaging Effects on the Planet and Our Health Part 3 of 3

Industrial Mining: Damaging Effects on the Planet and Our Health Part 3 of 3

In 2019, a team of scientists did a heavy metal analysis of soil and plant samples around the Murgul copper mine in eastern Turkey. The team studied the presence of trace elements such as copper, zinc, and cadmium in soils and plants. The results showed high concentrations of toxicity for most of the trace metal ions. In 2020, research showed that the release of toxic materials in Arizona had “soared” due to waste from both copper mines and the smelting of copper. The rare-earth elements (REE) are 17 silvery-white soft heavy metals that play a major role in making essential components for smart phones, computers, and many other electronic devices. However, the mining of REE can cause problems for the environment and for human health due to the large amounts of toxic and radioactive materials that result from the co-extraction of the radioactive metals thorium and uranium. In July 2019, an article published by the Yale School of the Environment at Yale University, USA, described how the removal of REE from the Earth’s crust, using a mix of water and chemicals, caused extensive water and soil pollution at a former mining site in Longnan County, Jiangxi Province, China. Dr. Günther Hilpert, Head of the Asia Research Division of SWP, further explains that extracting just one ton of rare earth elements produces 2,000 tons of toxic waste, and the process has devastated large regions of China. Ma Jun, a leading Chinese environmentalist and Director of China’s Institute for Public and Environmental Affairs, said in a phone interview, “To us as an environmental group, we hope that the environmental damage can stop and that these external (pollution costs) could be internalized in the cost of products.” Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai reminds us not to harm the environment and not to use up our precious Earth’s natural resources. “Every country should help each other to develop more sustainable energy for our shared planet as well as to protect the health of the people and the animals. We just cannot burn away or use up all our precious natural resources, and in the process harm our environment. We must adopt sustainable, green, frugal lifestyles which will support all life on the planet.”

“The Betrayal of Point Reyes”: An Environmental Travesty - A Plea to Protect Precious Habitats, Part 1 of 2

Point Reyes National Seashore is a magnificent National Park located approximately 48 km (30 miles) north of San Francisco, California, USA. However, events are occurring within Point Reyes that threaten the lives of the Tule elk-people. Park authorities are allowing several cattle-people ranches and factory farms to operate within the Park, and one-third of the Park’s land has been set aside for their use. Not only are these so-called “ranches” destroying the environment, but they are also threatening the lives of the wild animal-people kingdom, especially the delicate Tule elk-people. Even worse, Park authorities are considering killing some of the Tule elk-people to protect the ranchers’ operations. Many people are deeply opposed to having factory farms on precious protected park lands. To raise awareness about this dire situation, award-winning filmmaker and photographer Tony Sehgal produced a documentary film called “The Betrayal of Point Reyes.” “When I was doing the documentary and doing all the interviews, it really became apparent to me that there was a real betrayal going on. The land was purchased with tax dollars in 1962 for about $57 million, and 27 ranchers were paid. And the intention was the land would be returned to a natural state. And so, the betrayal there is that the ranchers were supposed to leave the National Park Service and the federal government has allowed them to stay.”Many organizations have also been working diligently to raise awareness about this dire situation and have the factory farms removed. One such organization is ForELK, co-founded by Diana Oppenheim. “You don't have to be an expert to go to Point Reyes and look at the land and see that the land is completely degraded where the cattle grazing operations are. The land is completely barren.”Tony is also deeply concerned about the devastating environmental damage caused by factory farming. In fact, it was his primary reason for shifting to a vegan lifestyle. “So, the impacts of animal agriculture is just tremendous -- the amount of water required and the energy used and the pesticides used. So, by going to a plant-based diet, I realized I'm cutting out all these inputs, all this land use required. And so, it really made a lot of sense for me.”

“The Betrayal of Point Reyes”: An Environmental Travesty - A Plea to Protect Precious Habitats, Part 2 of 2

On today’s program, Julie Phillips, a Tule elk-people biologist and educator shares her thoughts on the inappropriateness of having ranches in a national park. “I just briefly read the mission of the national park because I think that's really important. ‘The purpose of the National Parks system is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such a manner (and) by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.’ We need these special protected lands so we can be sure we have Tule elk over time.” “There's about a thousand acres of silage that's both planted and then mowed down as feed for the cattle operations. And they mow the lawn multiple times, including during bird nesting season. So, we have documented footage of these huge lawn mowers going over this silage grass field, and native birds just being demolished during their nesting season. And then on top of this, with so much land degradation and 30% of the land being dedicated to these ranchers, it basically creates a biological graveyard for wildlife.” “I really think that if we can phase out the commercial industry and we can give the land a chance to breathe and a chance to recover… So, if we can remove the destructive force on the land, the land will heal itself. But the first thing we have to do is get rid of all the harm that's being caused by these commercial beef and dairy operations.” For decades, our most beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has warned that raising animal-people livestock not only destroys the environment, but is the primary cause of global warming. She says that a global shift to a vegan lifestyle is essential if we want to save our planet. “If you really love your children, you would do anything, right? You would even lay down your life, but you don’t even have to lay down your life; you will be even more healthy. You just lay down piece of animal-people’s meat, which is poisonous and bad for you, bad for the environment and damaging the planet anyway, the planet that they want their children to inherit.”

Understanding the Imminent Threats of Global Warming: Interview with Dr. Emma Haziza (vegan), Part 1 of 2

Understanding the Imminent Threats of Global Warming: Interview with Dr. Emma Haziza (vegan), Part 1 of 2

Dr. Emma Haziza is a respected hydrological and climate change scientist from France. She is the Founder and President of Mayane, a research center that assesses the water-related risks associated with climate change and develops strategies for mitigating their impacts. “The world is in the process of shifting to a new climate. We have to be aware of this because we can no longer model the rainfall we used to have. We'll have to model these mega-floods.” In 2021, global warming caused unprecedented amounts of rainfall and flooding in Europe, China, Au Lac (Vietnam), Sri Lanka, Canada, India, Colombia, and many other countries. However, other parts of the world experienced widespread droughts. One of the gravest risks of drought is uncontrollable wildfires. Dr. Haziza cites the unprecedented fires in California, USA, where the drought during 2021 was the most extreme in the state’s 126-year history of record keeping. “So, in fact, this agricultural state is suffering as it has never suffered before. We have always had variability, with several years of drought. What we are experiencing here has nothing to do with that. We're on these mega-fires, zombie fires, which go directly under the peat, and therefore, in fact, moving forward, difficult to be controlled.” “If we don't understand that we have entered a new era of extreme climate, it’s here and now that it's happening, we're indeed completely missing out.” “And you have these big mechanical machines, which are going to exploit, at all costs, not to mention the pesticides that we find in our rivers. So, we can see that we are in a system, where the soils are extremely poor the slightest rain will come and wash the soils. And so, in fact we are going to have gigantic soil losses, accelerated by the fact that we've, removed all the vegetation and all the shrubs.” Numerous scientific studies show that raising animal-people for our so-called “food” is the major cause of deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, overuse of resources, and other problems.

Thawing of the Permafrost: Countdown to a Climate Catastrophe, Part 2 of 2

Thawing of the Permafrost: Countdown to a Climate Catastrophe, Part 2 of 2

In 2018, research on abrupt thawing that occurred under arctic lakes, known as thermokarst lakes, was led by Professor Katey Anthony. They discovered that the abrupt thawing of permafrost increased the release of ancient carbon stored in the soil by “125 to 190 percent compared to gradual thawing alone.” She warned that “by the middle to end of the century, the permafrost-carbon feedback should be about equivalent to the second strongest anthropogenic source of greenhouse gases, which is land use change.” Geologist Dr. Patrick Abbot inspected the heatwave that occurred in the summer of 2020 in Siberia. “In some of these areas in Siberia, the gases are trapped beneath enough of that ice that you literally get an explosion just like a volcanic explosion. There [are] over 7,000 of them that have been identified in Siberia, and over 400 of them are looked at as being in imminent danger of eruption.” Supreme Master Ching Hai has spoken many times to warn us about the dangers of methane gas and the melting of the permafrost. “Other research has also highlighted how quickly the temperature is rising in the Arctic, much faster than in the rest of the world. This means a vast quantity of methane could be released from the previously frozen soil very quickly, which would be a complete disaster for life on Earth.” Another investigation concerning the rapid thawing of permafrost was conducted in 2021 as part of the ESA NASA Arctic Methane and Permafrost Challenge. The study found that deadly pathogens were hidden deep below the Arctic's permafrost, suggesting that these lethal viruses trapped deep below the Arctic's surface could be released as a result of the rapid melting of ice. Meat and dairy diets are driving climate change at a distressing speed. Supreme Master Ching Hai has often spoken about stopping the consumption of animal-people products as the only real solution to halt climate change and save our precious planet. “One fact is clear: if we stop meat consumption and animal-people livestock raising, we will also eliminate one of the most heat-trapping gases, which is methane. This will also address problems like the melting permafrost, which will otherwise emit more methane if nothing is done to halt it.”

Do Good House & Urban Farming: Interview with Dr. Chun-Hsien Ho, Part 2 of 2

Do Good House & Urban Farming: Interview with Dr. Chun-Hsien Ho, Part 2 of 2

We were honored to visit Dr. Chun-Hsien Ho at Do Good House, where he shares some of his solutions to sea pollution. "I decided to first focus on plastic floats and polystyrene foam. These two have a huge impact on our marine ecology. If the wastes in the ocean can be turned into useful materials to counter global warming and environmental degradation, it would be a transformation from harming the planet to saving the planet." Dr. Ho gives us a tour of his artwork made from transforming marine waste. "Urban farming is most capable of digesting such marine wastes, which can be turned into installations for growing vegetables. As urban warming is very severe, I use these materials to create installations that require no watering to grow vegetables. When these plastic or polystyrene foam materials are fixed there, they stop getting into the environment. As they are products made from carbon derived from fossil fuels, scientifically our treatment is called carbon storage. Growing vegetables allows us to produce some foods in urban areas, so we can prepare ourselves to counter food shortages caused by environmental degradation. As we grow green vegetables, simultaneously, these green vegetables can carry out photosynthesis, which can actually help carbon reduction." All information concerning the scientific evidence of climate change and its solution is in Supreme Master Ching Hai’s Book, “From Crisis to Peace.” Free for download at: Crisis2Peace.org Dr. Ho has been invited to many schools to educate teachers and students on the concept of a sustainable, green lifestyle, as well as how to design edible landscapes. Dr. Ho also explains an effective composting method. Our many thanks to Dr. Chun-Hsien Ho for showing us his eco-friendly solutions, so that we, too, may use some of his brilliant techniques to better protect Mother Earth.

COP26 Report: Veganism the Top– Most-Important– Solution for Halting Climate Change, Part 2 of 2

COP26 Report: Veganism the Top– Most-Important– Solution for Halting Climate Change, Part 2 of 2

During the conference, many world leaders warned about the imminent, devastating impacts of climate change. One such leader was The Honorable Simon Kofe, Tuvalu’s Minister for Justice, Communication and Foreign Affairs, who stood knee-deep in water to deliver his message. “In Tuvalu, we are living the realities of climate change sea level rise as you stand watching me today at COP26. We cannot wait for speeches when the sea is rising around us all the time. Climate mobility must come to the forefront, we must take bold alternative action today to secure tomorrow.” During COP26, global citizens also protested against government inaction. On November 5, 2021, people around the world participated in an international event called, “Global Day of Action for Climate Justice.” In Glasgow, more than 100,000 people marched through the streets. Evan LeFevre, also known as “Vegan Evan,” a widely renowned animal-people rights activist and Shining World Compassion Award recipient, also attended COP26. He expressed his gratitude to Supreme Master Ching Hai and his wish for the world. “Thank You Supreme Master (Ching Hai) for everything You do for the animals, and for all the humans, and not just for the animals but for our planet. Because the animals on the planet, they need our help, and You’re doing an amazing job.” Although countless scientific reports conclude that raising animal-people for food is one of the leading causes of climate change, this topic was not discussed at COP26. Vanessa Hudson, Leader of the Animal Welfare Party, shared her view on this issue. “I cannot answer as to why our leaders aren't leading on this, why they aren't leading us towards a plant-based food future. We need people to lead us out of this crisis that we're in, which is a climate crisis, a biodiversity crisis, a health crisis, some would also say social justice crisis, to lead us to a future that works for all, and that has to start with a plant-based food system.” In a heartfelt speech in “Ahimsa and the Environment,” an online event held by the UK non-profit organization Go Dharmic, Master said the following: “All turbulences in our society are created by the violent and oppressive way we treat the innocent and vulnerable beings. We are destroying the plant kingdom, poisoning our food and water, killing helpful insects, animal-people, and killing humans as well, including our own children and babies, Billions of animal-people are slaughtered for meat consumption every week! They are also being horrifically oppressed to produce milk and eggs… All livestock farming is haunted with that oppressive, torturous, murderous, and utter suffering energy, all that tormented energy. And we are living in it. Then of course, by consuming these dead animal-people products, not only our soul will recognize it as unbefitting, cruel, wicked and devilish, but also our physical body will revolt. And then, sicknesses come… Now, imagine that kind of energy is being consumed by the mass of people globally and daily. Do we still wonder why our world degrades to this extent and suffers the way it does? Let’s pray for the quick rescuing of our planet and that our leaders and co-citizens alike will take heed of the warnings from nature, because nature is our own reflection. May God help the message of peace, mercy and benevolence to reach everyone’s hearts and open our minds to make the right choice, thus repair and sustain our only Earth home.”

The Devastating Chain Effect of Extreme Heatwaves, Part 2 of 2

14:22

The Devastating Chain Effect of Extreme Heatwaves, Part 2 of 2

In the previous episode, we learned how record severe heatwaves have impacted people's lives in the Western Hemisphere. On today's program, we’ll continue to see how climate change has caused extreme heatwaves that have led to disasters on other continents and what we can do to help mitigate this catastrophe. In the Middle East, heatwaves reaching temperatures of over 50 Celsius occurred in the Arabian Peninsula during the summer of 2021. Several countries in this region have already experienced severe drought, the worst in 900 years, and adding the extreme heatwaves has just made things worse, resulting in increased evaporation, lower water levels, and spreading desertification.Although Africa produces less than four percent of the world’s greenhouse gases, it is heavily impacted by climate change. Lack of rain and temperature increases have caused the worst droughts and the failure of crops. According to the United Nations, hunger is expected to rise in many places in Africa. In Ethiopia, the number of people facing starvation and death is expected to rise to 400,000, including tens of thousands of children. Our hearts are broken to see the condition of people in Africa. We need to act now to save the people and our world. Supreme Master Ching Hai has revealed that the quickest and most long-term solution to extreme weather events is adopting a vegan lifestyle. "Now, we have also record heat. The past decade has twice, at least, seen the hottest average annual temperatures ever recorded in our planet's history. In 2003, a record heatwave hit Europe, claiming tens of thousands of lives. Heatwaves also preceded the worst wildfires ever in Australia's history. Our current course of climate change is worse than the worst-case scenario projected by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), with the damaging and often fatal effects already being seen through such extreme events as hurricanes, flooding, droughts, and heatwaves." "We now can see how imperative it is to stop the warming of the planet with the greenest of all green policies and actions, the most compassionate, the most heroic, the most life-saving action; that is, the vegan diet, organic vegan to be exact. It's better for your health as well. It is the long-term insurance against climate change."

Protecting All Animal-People: Interview with Stephanie Maw (vegan), Humane Society International, Part 1 of 2

On today’s program we’ll meet Stephanie Maw, Public Affairs and Campaigns Officer of Humane Society International (HSI), a global animal-people welfare organization based in London, England. The mission of HSI is to protect all types of animal-people, including companion animal-people, farmed animal-people, and wildlife, and to prevent all forms of cruelty toward them. Stephanie describes some of the organization’s current projects. “We work on a number of campaigns. We've got a successful one on exposing the cruelty of the fur trade and trying to get a ban on fur farming or fur sales and imports in countries where there's already a ban in place. We're also working to end the trophy hunting trade, and then also the dog meat farming in Southeast Asia. So globally, we've got over 1,500 brands that have now agreed to stop using and selling fur.And our latest victory is one with ELLE Magazine. So, they, at the start of December, announced that they're going to be ditching fur across all of their editorial content and also their advertising content, both in their magazines but also online.” “Our Forward Food Programme is an international program. We run it across nine different countries, for example that includes the UK, Brazil, South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Mexico. So, it's really a big campaign. And we offer free culinary training programs to chefs and caterers and food service companies, but also to institutions, like schools and universities. We are now partnering with the second and third-largest catering companies, so Sodexo and Baxter Storey, and we're helping to support them so that they can reach their target, which is to switch to 25% to 30% of plant-based meals on their menus. It's been a great success because we've managed so far to switch 400 million animal-based meals to plant-based meals by working with caterers. And that's meant we've saved the lives to date of over 10 million animals and also the CO2 equivalent of 600,000 tons, which to give that a sense of what that means is as much as 1.4 billion miles driven in an average petrol car.”

Understanding the Imminent Threats of Global Warming: Interview with Dr. Emma Haziza (vegan), Part 2 of 2

On today’s program, Dr. Haziza shares further insights about the dire consequences of global warming. “And so, if we don't make the link today between the issue of mental health and the issue of these climatic extremes, it's us in the end that will pay the price.”“So, we indeed have to stop focusing on people who take a bath, or people who take a shower, because that is not the problem at all.” “Livestock farming is a huge consumer of water, and we see that in periods of drought, livestock farming is one of the first to suffer enormously.”“People must understand, at their level, what the consequences are and what is going to happen. So that's the first problem. The second major problem, in my opinion, is that we keep talking to people with scenarios for 2035 and 2050. And people are convinced that the problem will be in 2035 and 2050. But what has been happening on the planet during the last four years, this system which is self-expanding shows us that it's happening today not tomorrow, and the window of opportunity to react is very small. We only have a few years left! And so, a new world will have to be recreated.”“And so here we are, we're watching, and I think we all have to start acting. The first thing we have to do is to act on our plate. We have to relearn to eat as healthily as possible, with fruit and vegetables with as little as possible impact on the environment, because we're going to have a colossal impact. Through our consumption patterns, it's a militant act in itself, the way we eat.”Global warming has reached a critical tipping point. Given that a vegan lifestyle is the solution, what can we do to bring about a vegan world? “I think we need to talk to every citizen, every human being on Earth. We have to reconnect with him, and tell him that he has his power, he has his power to act, he also has his power to act in the choices he will make, and I believe that this is the only way we can act today.”

Protecting All Animal-People: Interview with Stephanie Maw (vegan), Humane Society International, Part 2 of 2

On today’s program we continue our discussion with Stephanie Maw, Public Affairs and Campaigns Officer at Humane Society International (HSI), a global animal-people welfare organization. Stephanie discusses how raising livestock for meat consumption is causing many of the problems facing Earth today. “If you look at the numbers and the science, we know it's the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions globally, as much as all forms of transportation worldwide combined. And it's not just greenhouse gas emissions that are a problem with animal agriculture. It's also the single largest human-made user of land. And again, we've got the scientific agreement there that one really important way is to shift diets away from meat and dairy products. And the UN-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have shown that if we reduced our consumption of animal products and ate more plant-based products instead, that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%. So, it's a really huge opportunity there for leaders to really make sure we can tackle the climate and nature crises that we're facing.” “There's growing public demand for governments to step up to the plate and take the lead. A study came out by D-MOSS, and it looked at what are the public's thoughts on what policy actions the UK government should prioritise. And actually, one of the top three, with 93% of respondents, was, ‘We want to see strong government campaign and policy action on reducing meat and dairy consumption.’ So, that should be hugely encouraging to our politicians in the UK. There's that backing from the public. They want to see leadership from government on this.” “There was a survey by Harris Interactive. And that showed that 25% of people in the UK are now shifting away from animal-based foods and trying out plant-based foods. So that's great. And I think a particularly encouraging figure is to see that 20% of millennials now identify as vegan or vegetarian.” Our most courageous Supreme Master Ching Hai often reminds us that widespread adoption of the vegan lifestyle is the only way to save our Earth. “If the government doesn’t want people to eat meat anymore, then first they have to stop all the slaughterhouses, all the livestock industry. Close them all down. Give these business owners some subsidies so that they can turn that into another kind of farming. Because they say that’s an animal-people farm, so they can turn that into a vegetable farm and fruit farm.”
