Nations Declare Climate Change as a Global Emergency Part 3 of 3: Interview with Ms. Polly Higgins

On today’s program, Ms. Higgins explains why additional laws need to be enacted to address the urgent issue of climate change. Ms. Higgins has a special message for governments and corporations. We each carry a duty of care for ourselves, for our families, for our communities, but also, we do actually have a duty of care, a moral duty of care that extends to our Earth. Our Earth is ultimately our universal home. And that moral duty of care can be translated into law. Scientists have concluded that raising livestock is one of the most significant contributors to global warming.

Extreme Weather Events: Urgent Call for Prevention, Part 3 of 3

Extreme Weather Events: Urgent Call for Prevention, Part 3 of 3

It is becoming increasingly clear that hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical cyclones around the world are becoming stronger and potentially more deadly as the planet warms due to the climate crisis. On May 20, 2020, it was reported that Amphan, the strongest cyclonic storm since the 2007 season, had made landfall along India’s east coast and in Bangladesh. With wind speeds gusting to more than 240 km/h (150 mph) the cyclone wreaked havoc as it raced inland, disrupting power supplies to about 5.5 million homes, and causing high tidal surges and a chaotic mess along the coast. The storm prompted Bangladesh to evacuate about 2.4 million people to shelters, while in India’s West Bengal, 500,000 people had to rush to safer locations. On numerous occasions, our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has stated that the most effective way to stop global warming is through widespread adoption of the vegan lifestyle. “We must, first of all and the most important thing, we have to stop global warming by choosing a sustainable diet that is vegan. This will almost immediately stabilize the planet, the weather, and then we can think about adapting to the changes. I hope we don’t have to adapt, but otherwise, it might be too late if we don’t take care of the problem at the root right now.” “You know, being a leader, you are supposed to lead people into the right direction, if you already know what’s good for them. It’s your duty. But it doesn’t seem like they’re doing much, or not fast enough, because they know for that piece of meat, if people continue to consume it, then the children and the other people, children, women, men, animals on this planet are going to be harmed, hurt or killed or maimed. And the other further generations, their children, their grand, grand great grandchildren, will be burned in such an inferno because of climate change due to meat consumption, meaning the meat industry. So, I don’t know why they hesitated so long, not to talk about Heavens and hells and punishments, rewarding, nothing else. As a human, we have to take care of each other, take care of other humans and animals, the weaker, lesser beings, by doing what is appropriate to protect us and protect them. For God’s sake!”

Climate Crisis: Countdown to Year Zero, Part 2 of 7

On today’s program we’ll continue watching “Countdown to Year Zero,” by joining a student climate change strike in New York City. “If we don’t do this to make huge, huge, huge changes in the next five to ten years, our kids are all going to be climate refugees.” “For way too long, the politicians and the people in power have got away with not doing anything to fight the climate crisis.” “I would tell consumers to eat less or no meat, to move towards a plant-bused diet. We need the natural world, and we’re destroying it so fast. Unless we all get together now, it will be too late.” “So we are here to start the ball rolling for a Vegan World by 2026. Clearly the system that normalizes violence is going to end whether we like it or not. It’s going to end because the Earth is saying, “It’s no more.” Within eight years, climate change is going to be crazy. It is telling us, the Earth is telling us we have to change. And there is this one light that you see at the end of the tunnel. And you see that light, and that’s nonviolence.”

Eco-friendly Inventions

The UK company, Skipping Rocks Lab, based in London, has developed a packaging alternative for drinking water and other beverages that eliminates the need for plastics. The process encapsulates drinking water in a flexible membrane or blob made of brown seaweed that is completely biodegradable, edible, and vegan. Besides eco-friendly inventions that reduce waste on land, brilliant inventions have been created to remove trash from bodies of water. Mr. Trash Wheel is a trash interceptor invented by Mr. John Kellett in 2008 that removes trash from the Jones Falls River at Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The waste collected is recycled or goes to waste-to-energy facilities.

Climate Change and the Increasing Frequency of World Disasters, Part 3 of 3

27:58

Climate Change and the Increasing Frequency of World Disasters, Part 3 of 3

With the average global temperature now standing at 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, many devastating weather-related events have been taking place around the globe, including floods, landslides, heat waves, and droughts. “The wildfires burning in Russia now are bigger than all the fires raging across the globe combined, bigger than those in the US, Canada, Turkey and Greece put together.” By mid-August 2021, the Dixie fire became the largest single wildfire in California history, having incinerated more than 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres), and destroying numerous structures. Across the Strait of Messina, in Sicily, as temperatures soared to 48.8°C (120°F), the highest ever recorded in Europe, fires burned mercilessly across the island. “NASA and the European Space Agency have released satellite photos showing just how widespread forest fires are right now. As well as near record flames in California, this image shows heavy wildfires in South America and Africa. It's a warning from space: the planet is burning faster than many of us realize.” And humans were not the only ones affected. On the Kazakh steppe, many animals were left without food or water, and in Mangistau province, more than 1,000 horses, cattle and sheep perished. The IPCC report concludes that the fastest way to save the planet from runaway global warming is to reduce methane gas emissions. The report states that, not only is methane many times “hotter” than CO2 in its warming potential, but cutting methane emissions gives much quicker results, because methane disappears from the atmosphere in only 20 years, compared to hundreds of years for CO2. One of the primary sources of methane gas is the raising of livestock. Our most beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai similarly recommends that reducing methane gas emissions is the fastest way to halt global warming. “We don’t have time now. We don’t have other choices now. PLEASE BE VEGAN. PLEASE BE VEGAN, MAKE PEACE. The vegan diet will stop global warming. So cut the methane by implementing the vegan diet. Then our planet will cool quickly also, scientifically speaking.”

Climate Change and the Increasing Frequency of World Disasters Part 1 of 3

21:38

Climate Change and the Increasing Frequency of World Disasters Part 1 of 3

On August 9, 2021, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). Drawing on more than 14,000 scientific studies, the IPCC report provides a detailed picture of how climate change is altering our world. “The world is dangerously close to runaway warming, and greenhouse gas levels are high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades. Here are some of the report's main takeaways: Humans are to blame: full stop.” Weather extremes once considered rare or unprecedented are becoming more common. Severe heat waves that happened only once every 50 years are now happening roughly once a decade. Tropical cyclones are getting stronger. And most land areas are seeing more rain or snowfall in a year. Severe droughts are happening 1.7 times as often. And fire seasons are getting longer and more intense. As Earth’s temperatures rise the number of floods also increase. In mid-July 2021, a devastating flood occurred in western Germany, where more than 182 mm (7.2 in) of rain fell in just 72 hours. Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands also suffered extensive flooding, and thousands of residents in the Netherlands were urged to evacuate their homes. In mid-July, a massive storm in Henan province in central China produced a years’ worth of rain in just 72 hours. It was estimated that 13 million people were affected. Also in July 2021, in India’s western state of Maharashtra, at least 180 people died when torrential rains flooded low-lying areas and caused numerous landslides. And these are only some of the many floods and resulting landslides that occurred around the world between June and early August 2021. Our most gracious Supreme Master Ching Hai has spoken many times about the extreme dangers of climate change. Quoting scientific evidence, She explains that raising livestock is the primary cause of global warming, and that the only way to halt its occurrence is through worldwide adoption of the vegan lifestyle. She also warns that we are in imminent danger, and must change our ways quickly.

Climate Solution: A Revealing Documentary by United in Heart, Part 1 of 4

United in Heart is a non-profit organization co-founded in 2018 by Mr. Arvin Paranjpe and his wife, Mrs. Nandhini Paranjpe. The group’s mission is to use scientific studies conducted by renowned climate scientists to quickly enhance global awareness about the urgency of climate change, and to share the quickest, most efficient ways to address the issue. “Now to a dire warning about climate change. According to a new report, experts say that we have until 2030 to avoid catastrophe. It also says if unprecedented changes are not made and made soon, there will be irreversible damage to the planet.” “So, let me just give you a little background on the problem. What is permafrost? Permafrost is ground that's been frozen for a long time. The name implies, suggests, permanently frozen. If only it were. 24% of the northern hemisphere land area is permafrost. We think that in that permafrost there is about 1,500 gigatons of carbon, and for context that's about twice what's in the atmosphere now.” “Most people are unaware that global warming may ignite the ice carbon bomb. Fifteen hundred gigatons of carbon is frozen in Arctic land masses. There's even more in the ocean. This is why plus 1.5 degrees Celsius keeps climate scientists up at night. And the more carbon dioxide emissions, the warmer it will get.” “An IPCC report indicates that 35% of the usable land area of the planet is used to just graze animals. On average we feed our animals 40 pounds (18 kg) of food for one pound (0.45 kg) of meat. And the animals consume almost 50% of the grain on Earth. So, if the world goes vegan, food is plentiful and land is plentiful.” Thank you, United in Heart, for sharing such important information at the most critical time in our planet’s existence. We hope more world leaders and citizens will heed this urgent call to heal our already burdened atmosphere and eradicate the climate crisis by choosing the only certain and viable solution, the vegan lifestyle.

IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land – Heralding a Plant-Powered Global Food System, Part 1 of 2

IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land – Heralding a Plant-Powered Global Food System, Part 1 of 2

IPCC is the body established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to provide policymakers with regular scientific assessments concerning climate change. It was the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for its work on climate change. The newly released second Special Report on Climate Change and Land brings revitalized hope with its wise, clear policy suggestions. The key message of the report is that in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, better land use, halting deforestation, and cutting down on food waste must be the priorities. In a 2009 conference, the world-renowned humanitarian and spiritual Master, Supreme Master Ching Hai, shared with attendees, “So, to cool the planet most quickly, we have to stop consuming meat in order to stop the livestock-raising industry, and thus stop greenhouse gases, methane and other toxic gases from the animal industry.”

Zoonotic Diseases: Nature’s Self-Defense, Part 2 of 2

15:38

Zoonotic Diseases: Nature’s Self-Defense, Part 2 of 2

Today we’ll further explore the causes, interconnections, and solutions for our planet’s public health and economic crises. In June 2020, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) released a report entitled, “COVID-19: Urgent Call to Protect People and Nature,” urging governments, corporations, organizations, and the public to take action to restore our broken relationship with nature and thus avoid future pandemics involving zoonotic infections, defined by the report as “any diseases originating from animals and transmitted to humans.” Among the many suggested initiatives to be implemented, some to be applied by governments are: a) halt the high-risk wildlife trade and increase enforcement to combat the illicit wildlife trade; and b) introduce and enforce legislation and policy actions to eliminate deforestation and conversion from supply chains. “To talk about nature is to talk about our essence, is to talk about us. The forest, the leaves, nature, the wind, the rain – it is sacred. Everything is sacred. In my language, it's called, ‘u-tã’ -- everything is sacred. Nature and the indigenous people are the whole of harmony. The indigenous people cannot live without nature, without the river. The earth has life; it cries when it is destroyed.” Defined by The International Ecotourism Society as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education,” ecotourism could be part of the solution to our profits vs. planet issues. Countries such as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, Nepal, Madagascar, and regions like Antarctica already use ecotourism as an important economic activity. The WWF for Nature report also recommends “scaling up efforts to combat the trade of illegal and high-risk species at national and international levels.” Some organizations including The International Anti-Poaching Foundation and The Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit, both in Africa, are putting forth efforts to stop the illegal hunting and capturing of wild animals. And last but not least, some enterprises have virtually taken land use out of the equation. Watergen, Ô Amazon Air Water, Solar Foods, and Fairbrics are some of the innovative businesses using air as a primary source for the development of food, water, and even clothing – avoiding the devastation of forests and the conversion of natural ecosystems, as well as preventing contact with wild fauna carrying viruses not yet known to human beings.

Pandemics: The Key to Prevention, Part 1 of 3

In late December 2019, news of a strange new virus emerging in Southern China began to surface. The virus, it was reported, was highly contagious. The World Health Organization named it “coronavirus disease,” or “COVID-19.” COVID-19 proved to be extremely contagious and spread like wildfire through China’s massive population. On March 11,2020, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director General of the World Health Organization, declared the Virus to be a global pandemic, stating, “We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and the severity. We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a (global) pandemic.” The pandemic put much of the world on pause. Billions of people were “self-quarantined” for an indefinite period. Borders were closed, flights cancelled. With billions of hearts was an underlying sense of fear. According to medical research, COVID-19 is a zoonotic disease, an infectious disease transmitted from animals to humans. It is suspected that the COVID-19 virus originated in bats, was then transferred to pangolins or scaly anteaters, and finally to humans. Scientists have demonstrated that every pandemic the world has experienced over the past 100 years has originated from animals.

Climate Solution: A Revealing Documentary by United in Heart, Part 4 of 4

On today’s program we present an interview with Mr. Arvin Paranjpe, who explains the three greatest environmental threats facing humanity today. “In 1992, there were three environmental threats to humanity that were identified, and they are: biodiversity loss, ecosystems collapse, and climate change. Biodiversity and ecosystems sustain us. They produce oxygen. They ensure that there's water flowing through the water cycle so we have fresh water, and they ensure that we have healthy soils.” “Vegan reforestation is reforesting (the) extra land made available by switching to veganism. The standard American diet requires 10 to 13 times more land than the vegan diet, and our animals consume about 50% of the grain on Earth. So, if we switch to a vegan diet, we will free up 35% of the usable land area on Earth. And if we reforest a substantial portion of this land, we will remove a significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.” “I think that we are living in very scary times. And I would just say to people, ‘Continue to have faith, have faith in yourself, have faith in humanity, and have faith in your spiritual teacher.’ In Hinduism, we have this concept of ‘Sraddha,’ which means both ‘faith’ and ‘resolve.’ And I think that we have nothing to worry about if we have the faith and we have the resolve to carry out the teachings of the great gurus of humanity. And in fact, I believe that we're going to undergo what I call the ‘twin renaissances,’ which is the regeneration of the natural world and the renaissance of the human spirit.” Citing the many climate-related disasters our Earth is experiencing, our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai frequently reminds us about the imminent dangers of climate change and shares the simplest and most effective solution -- the organic vegan diet. “In short, simply saying ‘No’ to meat will make us richer, healthier, and most importantly, it will make us a wiser person, and a great hero. Because it is the only timely way that we ensure the survival of our children and grandchildren.” “The foremost being vegan diet, the vegan diet, to safeguard our precious planet. It is time to walk the talk, because there is not much time left now.”

Climate Crisis: Countdown to Year Zero, Part 4 of 7

In this episode we'll learn that one of the most powerful tools for encouraging people to change is social media. On today’s program, we'll meet two social media animal-rights advocates, Mr. Ryuji Chua, a dedicated activist from Los Angeles, California, USA, and Ms. Renee king-Sonnen, founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Waelder, Texas, USA. “By me putting out content on the internet and being like, ‘Hey, this is what I’m about. I’m vegan, this is my life. My life is awesome.’” ”I can't speak to everyone. But what if I can speak to a thousand people and I can not only speak to them but empower them to create their own community? Then they can empower their community to create more communties. And in that way, we can really spread a movement. Today we have this opportunity to change the world by creating communities.“ “This chicken farmer-cattle rancher family in the heart of chicken-ranch country has gone vegan.” “The earth is getting hotter. We are killing animals. We are destroying forests still. And so, we have no choice but to return the forests. To me it’s as if Nature has said, ‘You now understand what’s going on. You now know you have to bring back life. That’s the only way you’re going to survive. Otherwise you are also going to die.’”
