Tzu Chi Medical Foundation’s Healthcare Professionals on Optimal Wellness, Part 3 of 3

Tzu Chi Medical Foundation’s Healthcare Professionals on Optimal Wellness, Part 3 of 3

There are several principles for a healthy vegan diet. The first one is to eat whole foods. Some foods are advertised as vegan but they may be heavily processed. For example, sugary drinks and some vegan snacks may be vegan, but they are not healthy. So, on a regular basis, we encourage everyone to eat more whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruit, nuts, seeds, and the like. In general, we should eat real food instead of those processed products. The second principle is to pay attention to several nutrients that vegans need. It is necessary to be exposed to the Sun for 10 to 15 minutes a day.

Gemma Newman, MD: Plant Power Doctor, Part 1 of 2

A team of scientists from Harvard University’s School of Public Health in the US completed a meta-study in October 2016 using data from 131342 participants who were tracked for more than 26 years in two separate medical studies to determine how diet relates to wellness and longevity. As reported in the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” the researchers concluded that replacing animal protein with plant protein was associated with a decreased risk of death. The most important factor in maintaining health and vitality has got to be what we put inside our bodies, and luckily that’s also what we’ve got the most control over.

Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Ayurveda originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, and is one of the oldest medical systems in our world. In Sanskrit, the word “Ayurveda” has two components, “ayur” meaning longevity and “veda” meaning science. In the beginning, this method was passed down through the generations by Indian physicians and sages through oral teaching. Later, this precious healing knowledge was recorded in books. The three key ancient texts that document Ayurvedic medicine practices are famously known as the “Great Trilogy,” namely the “Charaka Samhita,” “Sushruta Samhita” and “Astanga Hridaya.”

The Dangers of Microplastics to Health, Part 2 of 2

10:28

The Dangers of Microplastics to Health, Part 2 of 2

Nowadays, the majority of clothing contains synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester. Clothes like T-shirts, dresses and jeans may use cotton that is blended with synthetic materials. These manmade fabrics are comprised of plastic fibers. Workers in the fabric manufacturing plant may inhale them. The dimensions of microfibers are an important factor for their toxicity. Finer fibers are easier to eliminate from the airway, while longer fibers are more difficult to expel from the body and may destroy pulmonary cells. The biopersistent ones are more likely to cause acute or chronic lung inflammation. The microplastics do not stay in the factory. Every time synthetic garments are put in the washing machine, a single load could generate up to 700,000 microfibers that eventually end up in the sewage system. Besides influences on respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, microplastics can also act as carriers of endocrine disruptors. It is time for us to rethink plastics and make immediate changes in our habits. Here are some tips to minimize the risks of microplastic waste being introduced to the environment or being in our immediate surroundings: 1. Avoid single-use plastic bags. According to statistics, about one trillion single-use bags are used worldwide annually. That equals to nearly two million bags utilized every minute. So, when you go shopping, make sure to bring your own bags. Always keep one handy when you go out. This is a very important first step to curtail the use of single-use plastics. 2. Buy food in bulk and products with less or no plastic packaging. 3. Use glass containers instead of plastic ones. 4. Recycle. When tossing plastic trash, pay attention to ensure it is placed in the correct recycling container. That way we can maximize the amount of plastics being recycled. 5. Avoid cosmetic products that contain microbeads. 6. Quit smoking. 7. Minimize household dust. We hope today’s program has changed the way you look at plastics and has provided you with insights on how we can lessen the negative effects of microplastics on our world.

What You Eat Matters: Dr. Caroline Trapp (vegan) on Diabetes, Diabetes, Part 2 of 2

Some are under the impression that once a person has acquired diabetes, he or she will need to take medication, or live with the condition, for the rest of their life. Dr. Trapp sheds light on this common misunderstanding. “Well, I no longer think that that’s true because I’ve seen people who just by making this significant diet change, have gotten healthier, and who don’t need medication, and who able to turn this disease around. In terms of diet, these are some of the reasons that I hear people or doctors say that their patients can’t do a plant-based diet. So, one is concerns about a lack of protein. No, it doesn’t happen. Another concern is that it’s too hard for most people. It’s doable. And I applaud all of you. We not only want to use less medication, but we want to use more plants. Exercise is really important, but, by itself, it often isn’t enough. Getting enough sleep is also really important. And of course, if you smoke cigarettes, that is the number one recommendation. Quitting smoking will go a long way to protecting the blood vessels that are at risk of damage from diabetes.”

Taiwan Adventist Hospital – A Vegetarian Hospital with a Caring Mission, Part 2 of 3

In today’s show, we are honored to hear from Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming, a breast cancer surgeon, Taiwan Adventist Hospital’s Cancer Care Committee’s chief executive officer, and the former director of the hospital’s breast surgery department. He will share with us his perspectives on the relationship between a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and breast cancer prevention as well as about his hospital’s compassionate care for breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is a condition where a malignant tumor has developed from cells in the breast. “Breast cancer occurs most generally around the age of 40 to 69 or 70. It is lucky if the disease is diagnosed and treated in the early stages so that she still could keep her roles in the family and workplace. It is not only helpful to her health, but also mental sustenance for her. So, it is necessary to have regular check-ups. The most important point is to never let the disease happen in the first place. Therefore, a proper diet, a vegetable and fruit-based diet, and regular exercise, may be the most fundamental and better way to prevent diseases.” Dr. Hsieh discussed with us the research findings of Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Scientists concluded that women who consume high amounts of fruits and vegetables each day have a lesser chance of having breast cancer. “It was led by America’s Harvard University. Thirty years ago, they began tracing the relationship between the breast cancer risk and intake of vegetables and fruits – that is, if your intake of vegetables and fruits is high, then your breast cancer risk will be lower. In fact, according to our long-term follow-up tracing, it is really beneficial to have a correct diet and proper exercise. These can activate the immune cells in our body to fight the cancer cells. They can suppress the cancer.” We appreciate Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming's sharing of his medical expertise about breast cancer and how his hospital is supporting those with the condition.

Fasting Ourselves Out of the Pleasure Trap: Dr. Alan Goldhamer (vegan), Part 3 of 3

Fasting Ourselves Out of the Pleasure Trap: Dr. Alan Goldhamer (vegan), Part 3 of 3

Today, Dr. Goldhamer will continue to share his wisdom on progressing to a healthier lifestyle. Skipping one or two meals in a day is easily attainable, but when it comes to truly long periods of purposely not eating, this is a different matter and requires careful guidance. “I might want to point out that fasting is done by everyone. Everybody fasts when they go to bed at night and they don't eat, for whether it's 6 hours, or 8 hours, or 10, or 12, or even as we often recommend 16 hours, people are fasting. And so now the question is, ‘What about with intermittent fasting? What if we narrow the feeding window which is often recommended?’ So by not eating 3 hours before you go to bed, let's say you don't eat after, say, 6 o'clock and you don't eat breakfast, say, before 9 am, now you've got a period of anywhere from 12 to 16 hours, depending on the specifics, where you're fasting, and some have suggested that even that brief period of intermittent fasting is enough to induce hormone changes and other changes over time, cumulatively, that may have health-promoting benefits. It's also possible by narrowing the feeding window to 8, or 10, or 12 hours a day that you may tend to eat less." "Fasting can create an environment where the body can get rid of pathogenic bacteria in the gut. You have 5 pounds (2.26 kg) of bacteria living in your intestinal tract right now, maybe 1,000 different strains. These are living creatures, living, eating, drinking, and defecating inside you right now. So, you have 5 pounds (2.26 kg) of bacteria pooing inside your body as we speak, and what your body poos inside you will depend on what you feed them. So, if you want those bacteria pooing trimethylamine oxidase into you and increasing your risk of heart disease and cancer, people may choose to eat meat. If you want to have your bacteria pooing fertilizer into you, including vitamin K and other things, then I would recommend a whole plant food diet, particularly starchy vegetable materials."

And 3,256 people reported getting better from 28 different conditions when they switched to non GMO and largely organic diets. That the number one condition was digestive problems, and number two was fatigue, number three was overweight or obesity, and number four was clouding of consciousness. Number five was mood problems, such as anxiety or depression, and then there’s food allergies and sensitivity, and every one of those is 50% or above.

The Benefits of Horticultural Therapy

Today’s program examines how horticultural therapy can better physical and mental health. Over time, the healing potential of gardening, or even spending time in gardens, has gained greater recognition in the healthcare field, and these activities have become an accepted method of healing. Tony Wright, a retiree from Georgia, USA, was suffering from severe depression and alcoholism and found relief when his horticultural therapist asked him to work in a greenhouse for three months doing activities such as re-potting plants and arranging flowers. As this therapy has become an accepted treatment modality for those of all ages and various conditions globally, it is now practiced in a wide variety of settings. This form of therapy has a broad spectrum of uses in bettering our well-being and touches many facets of life. Overall, cultivating plants can make one more energetic and relaxed, as well as have better sleep quality.

Cultivating Good Health: Lessons from China’s Dragon Boat Festival

Cultivating Good Health: Lessons from China’s Dragon Boat Festival

Since ancient times, the Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month around the summer solstice. During the festival, people watch dragon boat races and eat rice dumplings to mark this special occasion. In today's program, we will share tips from Traditional Chinese Medicine on how you can cultivate a healthy lifestyle during the upcoming dragon boat season and summer months. As the famous Tang Dynasty doctor Sun Si-Mao said well over a thousand years ago, “The superior doctor prevents illness. The mediocre doctor treats imminent illness. The inferior doctor treats manifest illness.” Thus, it is essential to learn what daily steps we can take to avoid disease. The summer solstice, which marks the start of summer, annually occurs sometime between June 20th and June 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest day and shortest night of the year. After this event, the days will gradually become shorter and the nights longer. Since the Dragon Boat Festival comes around or right before the summer solstice, this occasion is also known as the “Summer Solstice Festival.” During the Dragon Boat season, it is traditionally a time in China to develop balance and harmony between the mind, body, and nature to build up disease resistance to ensure wellness over summer. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theories, we must refrain from doing three things to maintain good health when the yang energy is at its peak. First, we must abstain from raw and cold foods in the evening, as they are hard to digest. Raw vegetables and gourds should be avoided in the summertime, especially at night. Moreover, we should not drink tea on an empty stomach, as this could consume our yang energy. Second, we should not take cold water baths. Our sweat glands and skin pores are open in the hot summer months. Taking a cold shower will make our body vulnerable to cold air, leading to an imperceptible loss of our yang energy. Third, we should not sleep exposed to the cold air at night. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the head is where all yang energies converge. Sleeping in the cold air overnight could lead to a decline in our yang energy and eventually to its complete depletion – thus causing severe illness. To maintain good health at the summer solstice and beyond, we should remain in line with our invigorating yang energy, which must be protected and nourished. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are three dietary guidelines for the summer solstice: Eat light foods for easy digestion, such as green beans, watermelons, jujubes, sugar cane, and pears. Eat bitter foods to disperse heat and dampness. Examples include bitter gourd, celery, dandelion, cucumber, and gouji leaf. Eat sour foods to improve appetite and digestion, such as tomatoes, lemons, strawberries, black plums, grapes, hawthorn berries with seeds removed, pineapples, mangos, and kiwis. What about having an ice-cold drink in the hot season? Sounds appealing, doesn't it? However, it is not recommended according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. This ancient teaching says cold beverages or items like ice cream will prevent the enzymes in our gut from working properly; the result is our meal is incompletely digested. It is not only a waste of food, but also potentially harms our health. Nurturing Mental Health for the Summer Solstice In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is related to the fire element, the heart, which is the organ responsible for the emotion of joy. In summer months, try to keep a clear and peaceful mind, happy and cheerful disposition, and spirit of magnanimity and vitality. All living things need sunlight to grow. So, we should maximize our time outdoors as well as foster good cheer and liveliness. Such measures allow our vital energy to function smoothly. Physical Exercise to Nurture Health for the Summer Solstice Physical exercise is a vital element for ensuring good health. In the summertime, it is best to be active early in the morning or evening when it is cooler. If exercising indoors, the space should have plenty of fresh air. Avoid extreme exercise that leads to profuse sweating, which hurts both your yin and yang energy.

Interview with Mark Blaxill, Author of “Vaccines 2.0: The Careful Parent’s Guide to Making Safe Vaccination Choices for Your Family”, Part 1 of 2

Do vaccines threaten the health of our child? Well, vaccines are a very controversial topic. I’d like to say I’m not anti-vaccine but I am skeptical of our current vaccination policies. And I believe what the CDC has produced as its recommended schedule of childhood vaccinations is excessive, bloated and unsafe. But, in 1986, the US Congress passed a bill that gave chronic liability exemption to all vaccine manufacturers and doctors who administrate vaccines. And that opened the floodgates to an expansion of the recommended schedule. And so, what we have today, to be fully vaccinated today, is an unprecedented, uncontrolled human experiment on a generation of children. It’s never been tested for safety. And I believe as a totality, it’s unsafe.

Healing through Playing with Art: Art Therapist Joan Stanford (vegan), Part 1 of 3

According to the British Association of Art Therapists, art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Art is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues, which may be confusing and distressing. We are honored to feature and interview with Joan Stanford, a vegan board-certified art therapist, who will graciously introduce us to the practical uses and positive effects of art therapy. “The directive that I was taught in my training was to hold it in your hands as though it was your heart or you. Something, so you’re very gentle with it. Like you spent five minutes just holding clay in your hands and manipulating it in some fashion. How did that make you feel? And often, people cry because it’s a tactile medium, so it’s a very early stage in our development, pre-verbal and all of that, and it just opens up things.” “A dramatic example I remember was with a young boy that had night terrors. He had a really horrific thing happen in his life. And I asked him to, on this piece of paper, put something symbolic of the fear, so he put… and then I said, ‘Well, now fold that up, hide it.’ So, he folded it up… but over the next few weeks, he stopped having the night terrors.”

Towel Exercise: Portable Gym for Fitness

Towel Exercise: Portable Gym for Fitness

A towel can be used for isometric exercises. “ISO” literally means “equal” while “metric” is a measurement. Such routines involve keeping a static position with a contraction of a muscle or muscle group, but the muscles remain at a fixed length. Simply put, the amount of force you use to pull a towel may change, but the angle of your joints does not vary. Isometric exercises are beneficial because they are more gentle on the joints in comparison to weight-bearing exercises, like weightlifting. They are often incorporated into rehabilitation exercise routines, which can help people recovering from procedures like hip surgery, to improve strength without adding too much stress on the affected joint.

Ananda Dhara Yoga Village: Helping People Attain Bliss, Part 1 of 3

Ananda Dhara Yoga Village: Helping People Attain Bliss, Part 1 of 3

Today, we are privileged to introduce you to Rutger Tamminga, the co-founder of a special institution that endeavors to spread the yoga spirit, the Ananda Dhara Yoga Village – Center for Applied Neohumanism. Based in Taichung City, Taiwan, also known as Formosa, the center was established in 1995 by Mr. Tamminga, who is originally from the Netherlands, and Mohamukta of Formosa. Ananda Dhara, which means “abode of bliss” in Sanskrit, is a place aspiring to promote and apply the Neohumanism philosophy of the venerated Indian spiritual guru Sri Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, also known as Baba, through many initiatives, including yoga and wellness classes for different age groups and people with special needs, group meditation, yoga teacher training, and storytelling workshops. Starting from scratch 25 years ago, the couple eventually established this mountain spiritual retreat center in a beautiful setting. They have also founded a kindergarten, published an assortment of yoga-themed educational materials for children such as storybooks, music CDs, and kindergarten curriculums. In this episode, Rutger shares his perspectives on yoga and now provides an overview of the practice. Mr. Tamminga feels yoga practitioners should pay close attention to diet and discusses his vegetarian lifestyle. “Part of the reason why the world is heating up is because of meat production. But to come back to the yoga side of our diet, there are other foods we also avoid taking. Apart from meat, we don’t eat eggs. They are not good for our mental peace. This kind of sensitivity develops when you practice more. The idea of yoga is to develop a purer mind, a more stable and peaceful mind. And our food affects how we think.” Yoga has also been shown to help children with attention problems, as well as to support executive function development. “We also do yoga with children who have special needs. And together with my wife we have a kindergarten, and in our school, we get children who have maybe developmental problems. And we have found yoga to be beneficial to these children also. So actually, yoga is for everyone, but it needs to be adjusted according to every person.”

Keeping Teeth Strong And Healthy For Life, Part 1 of 2

In recent years, more and more people have started using sugar substitutes like xylitol and stevioside. These sweeteners not only enhance the flavor of your food, but they can also inhibit growth of harmful bacteria and help prevent tooth decay. Also, research conducted in japan found that fiber intake from vegetables and mushrooms can help maintain oral health. Since dietary fiber stimulates the secretion of saliva, and saliva neutralizes the acidity of the mouth and inhibits bacterial growth, a plant-bases diet is an excellent defense against tooth decay.
