Air Pollution – An Alarming Health Hazard, Part 2 of 2

Air Pollution – An Alarming Health Hazard, Part 2 of 2

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 91% of the world’s population live in places where air contamination exceeds safe limits. They can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, allergies, asthma, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer. The animal-people livestock industry produces large amounts of waste like urine and manure, which emit around 400 different harmful gases into the atmosphere! According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, methane emissions from pig- and cattle- people have increased by up to 50% in the last 15 years. Meanwhile, deforestation for the meat production industry has been accelerating the effect of global warming. It also increases the chance of wildfires, which in turn further aggravates air pollution and global warming. In March 2021, China’s capital, Beijing, took a strong hit from a massive sandstorm sweeping across Mongolia and northwestern China. Beijing’s air quality index at that time reached a record of 999, the hazardous level, whereas the recommended average daily concentration by the World Health Organization is just 25! In 2020, the United Nations designated September 7 as the first International Day of Clean Air in order to raise awareness about the importance of unpolluted air for our health, productivity, the environment, and the economy. First and foremost, we should switch to a vegan diet. The researchers found that people who consume more than 100 grams of meat per day, generate up to 7.2 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent daily, whereas vegans generate only 2.9 kilograms. Second, we can lessen air pollution by driving clean-fuel cars. Also, when someone switches from a conventional car to a battery electric vehicle, PM emissions can be cut down by up to 42%. Third, we can protect our health from air contaminants by planting more trees, including in urban areas. Not only do trees help to reduce detrimental air pollutants, but they also act as air purifiers. Finally, until our planet’s atmosphere becomes safer for everyone, we should consider using protective equipment for ourselves and our family members, as a short-term defense. Let us also pray for Heaven’s help and wisdom so that humankind will U-turn to a more viable, vegan way of life.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Fredric Weiss on Plant-Strong Eating, Part 1 of 2

I have recently become acquainted with the importance of diet in treating the diseases that I treat. And so if we can somehow stem that by changing our diets and our exercise patterns, it will save us a lot of livers for patients who have congenital diseases or diseases that were certainly nothing to do with their diets or their lifestyle. Dairy, in particular, is a major cause of gas, belching, reflux, and abdominal pain. So, I think the dairy elimination can start to do wonders for patients who have upper gastrointestinal illnesses. Plant-based diets are hugely filled with fiber and nutrients that encourage water excretion by the colon.

Dr. Lee Yu-Ming on Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Profound Wisdom, Part 3 of 3

In addition to considering the results gathered from the four diagnostic methods of TCM, that of visual inspection, listening and smelling, verbal inquiry and physical palpation, when assessing a patient’s condition, a traditional Chinese medical doctor will use the Eight Principles of TCM to further investigate and discover the cause of a disease. The “Eight Principles” refer to “yin and yang,” “exterior and interior,” “cold and heat,” and “deficiency and excess.” However, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners believe that the vegetarian diet is good for health, because in the “Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic,” a lot of emphasis is placed on meat-eating being a potential cause of various kinds of diseases.

Acupuncturist Lisa K.Y. Wong (vegan): The Magic of Auricular Medicine, Part 2 of 3

Auricular Medicine is a scientific medical system used to diagnose and treat many different diseases using the ears. Because auricular points are specific locations connected to different areas of the body, if a part of our body has trouble, the corresponding point of the ear will reflect this. Based on this unique mechanism, many ailments can be found and cured by manipulating the corresponding acupressure points. The ear performs the exceptional function of recording the body’s physical history. This can assist Auricular Medicine practitioners in gathering past and present medical information about the client through a process called ear reading. “We read the ear and get the information about what you’ve been through, so basically getting your medical history from reading your ear. And not just what happened to you before, but also what’s happening now in your body; and because the ear has so much information, including that information, genetic information, the genetic predisposition that’s within your genes, that also can be detected in the ear.” In Auricular Medicine, the shape of the ear is said to resemble the resting human fetus. Based on this model, an Auricular Medicine practitioner can tell which points of the ear are associated with which parts of the body. Sometimes, simply pressing a specific place on the ear can eliminate a health condition’s symptoms. “And then, I find a pain in your ear that connects to that pain, and help them make that connection and through just simple massage of that part of the ear, their pain goes away.” Lisa developed the Healing By Design Method, an effective three-step process to initiate self-healing. She now demonstrates how to apply the three steps to relieve a headache.

Full Vibrancy and Light: Lesa Carlson (vegan) on the Raw Vegan Lifestyle, Part 1 of 2

Lesa is a talented artist, singer, actress, model, choreographer and dancer. She is most well-known as a Los Angeles, USA-based raw vegan chef who has many famous clients. Ms. Carlson has built several sustainable green businesses that focus on raw vegan organic foods as well. Such foods are plant-based and have not been heated past 48 degrees Celsius to preserve their energy. Lesa has a refreshingly different take on proper nourishment that is based on quantum physics and light. ‟ Ultimately, the optimum food on a raw vegan diet is anything that has its full vibrancy and light. We are light codes, light bodies. The best option for that is things that are handpicked, that are in their most innate vibrant state. And that's plants. And that's things that are coming from the earth. So those are the most vibrant, and they have proteins, and they have all the energetic properties of life that we need to live, encoded. It's when it has been knocked out or changed and that is usually by a heat, high heat, the codes become despondent, broken, and cell walls are exploded. Your body doesn't recognize it. It's not separate; it's a whole. When you eat a plant, there are roots, there's bark, there are seeds, all parts of that plant have information in it. It actually functions together. It comes together. And so when your body gets the full content and information from that plant, you are whole. You recharge, you regenerate, you can do that at any time while you have this physical mass manifestation in this plane. You can regenerate any part of your body that you want to regenerate, including your teeth, including any part that needs to be replenished; it just needs to be given the light codes. I've been a raw foodist for 30 years, 100% raw foodist, vegan raw foodist. And I do believe in supplementation in the context of that there are foods that are high in nutrients, but they're still raw, they're still plant-based."

Dr. Stephen Gorad (Vegan) on Quinoa - Supergrain of the Future, Part 3 of 3

Dr. Stephen Gorad (Vegan) on Quinoa - Supergrain of the Future, Part 3 of 3

This supergrain has many different colors and other distinguishing features. Dr. Gorad explains more. “There’s red, white, and black. There are actually several thousand different quinoas. So that’s something that concerns me, because when I started with quinoa, one of the things I talked about was the diversity of genetic material in quinoa.” As our world transitions to plant-based eating, those engaged in animal livestock raising will also change to compassionate livelihoods. “The spiritual meaning of respecting animals’ lives is one thing. The other thing is the kind of ecological disaster that raising animals is causing on the planet. Someone calculated the amount of energy it takes to produce a unit of protein. So the ratio for meat is 50 to one. For fish, it’s 10 to one. Chicken is four to one. Soy is two to one. You only need two units of energy to produce a unit of protein. Quinoa. Less than one and a half to one.(Wow.) It’s the most efficient plant for producing protein. Maybe it’s not so important now, but it’s going to be important in the future.”

John Jezewski (vegan): Wellness Is in Our Hands, Part 2 of 2

Today, it is our privilege to feature more excerpts from our interview with John Jezewski. Mr. Jezewski is more than just a nutritionist. He is a living nutritionist and provided us with a background on how he assists people through his practice. “Living nutrition is taking the absolute latest technology and also taking techniques of enthusiasm. So people can make a proper transition to a perfect diet for them. And we’re talking about making that part of your living, part of your life.” “And helping you with supplements, with tonic herbs, and how to do exercises, when to do exercises, how to treat all these different conditions, what you can do to help that particular condition.” As Mr. Jezewski just mentioned, he recommends appropriate dietary supplementation to his clients. His view is that if our focus is to improve our bone density, the intake of plant sources of silica is the intelligent choice. “Good calcium you get from plants. You get calcium from green food basically; you eat lots of that. For bones, you need the silica, not the calcium. You need nettles; you need hemp leaf tea. You need to eat hemp; you need to eat things like nettles, hemp.” “That, with vitamin D, the sunshine, is fantastic. And then, magnesium. That, again, you get from your plants.” “a tonic herb has got no side effects, by definition. It wouldn’t be a tonic herb. So you can take that, and it works internally, and it raises consciousness. It doesn’t suppress any symptoms; it brings them out; it gets rid of them.” Introducing plant-based eating to his clients is part of Mr. Jezewski’s living nutrition practice. He is encouraged by the trends he sees worldwide in terms of the awareness that veganism is the key to wellness.

Dr. Steve Blake’s Natural Approach to Osteoarthritis, Part 1 of 2

Dr. Blake, a vegan, has a doctorate in holistic health specializing in nutritional biochemistry as well as naturopathic medicine. I think that with a good natural approach, a nutritional approach, we can lower this number and help people who already have arthritis. One of the best things we can do for hip or knee arthritis is to lose a little bit of weight. The best approach to arthritis is to make sure you’re getting your mega-3s, the plant-based omega-3s. So, get enough flax seeds ground up and enough walnuts in your diet.

Nutritionist Rohini Bajekal (vegan) on Transitioning to a Healthy Plant-Based Diet

Nutritionist Rohini Bajekal (vegan) on Transitioning to a Healthy Plant-Based Diet

While some have succeeded in changing their diet overnight, others have taken more time and had some challenges in effectively transitioning. We joyfully invite you to listen to Ms. Rohini Bajekal, a highly trained British nutritionist, as she imparts to us savvy suggestions and helpful hints for a successful switch. The nutritionist and her mother hold online vegan cooking classes for Made in Hackney, the UK’s first plant-based community cookery school. What should one eat during the transitioning term? “There are lots of gently processed foods such as tofu or canned beans or things like that that can help us. And I also believe that transition foods have a place in the diet. So, for example, if you're transitioning to a plant-based diet, it could be helpful to swap cheese for a vegan cheese just while you're starting out. But the truth is we all need to educate ourselves on the healthiest, cheapest, most delicious and nourishing way to eat, which is definitely cooking from scratch.” “We should also be minimizing, limiting our consumption of oils. We can get all the fats that we need from things like avocados, nuts, seeds, soy, and these are all great examples of where we can get healthy fats, healthy monounsaturated fat. One of the things I really recommend for optimal brain health is taking omega-3 supplements such as a DHA or EPA supplement. This is from algae which is where the fish get their omega-3s from. But you can actually get all the omega-3s that you really need by eating whole plant foods like ground flax seeds, walnuts, hemp seeds and milled chia seeds.” “My advice is go for it, you won't regret it. Being vegan is not a sacrifice. It's a diet of abundance. There are 20,000 edible plant species, and we eat the same six animals. My vision is that people start thinking about these things more and more, and together, we can all create a more kind, compassionate world.”

Protecting the Vulnerable During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Part 2 of 2

Protecting the Vulnerable During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will continue to examine other vulnerable groups at an elevated risk of exposure to COVID-19. Homeless people and those whose living conditions fall below basic standards, like informal settlements, are more susceptible to infections, while refugees and internally displaced people are probably the most at-risk. Fortunately, there are international agencies that provide services to these groups to help better minimize their possible exposure to COVID-19. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has scaled up projects to keep refugees and internally displaced people safe by providing life-saving support including clean water, medical care and personal protective equipment like masks. “You can see here there is a handwashing device which is not the usual one. We developed this one considering the response to COVID-19 so that there is less contact of hands with handwashing devices in the communal places.” Countries are also reaching out to support various humanitarian aid organizations. The government of Switzerland has donated US$1.8 million to the United Nations World Food Programme for food supplies for the Sahrawi refugees living in five camps near the Algerian town of Tindouf. About 20 young volunteers in Bolivia are participating in the “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign to help isolated seniors obtain vital resources. A joint report released in 2020, by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Livestock Research Institute states, “About 60 percent of human infections are estimated to have an animal origin.” Furthermore, it explains, “While wildlife are the most common source of emerging human disease, domesticated animals may be original sources, transmission pathways, or amplifiers of zoonotic disease.” Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has emphasized for many years that humans can stop zoonotic diseases by being vegan.

Do you often have difficulty falling asleep? Do you wake up feeling unrested? Have you experienced persistent in digestion and poor appetite? Are rapid mood swings part of your daily life? Do you have cold hands and feet, or catch frequent colds? These conditions could be warning signals from the autonomic nervous system about a compromised health status. There are two main reasons. Firstly, our diet is far from natural; and secondly, overwhelming stresses in life. But aside from clinical methods, we can also help regulate our autonomic nerves by upgrading to a plant-based diet.

Having Fun and Staying Healthy by Surfing, Part 2 of 2

Surfing and swimming go hand in hand. In the early 1900s, Duke Kahanamoku, nicknamed “The Duke,” was a master of both. As a talented swimmer, he broke three freestyle swimming records and won a gold medal in a freestyle event at the 1912 Olympics and two more in 1920. This shined the spotlight on his life in Hawaii, where he displayed his surfing talents and introduced a new sport to the world at large. Surfing not only brings physical health benefits, but also provides psychological benefits. It brings serenity and a greater respect for Nature’s beauty into one’s life. Surfing is being used as a powerful rehabilitation tool for sufferers of drug addictions and other disorders, bringing the surfers a newfound sense of joy and connection with nature. “Water is medicine. It is! This is Naoki, a 13-year- old boy who wrote a bestseller about autism. Here’s what he had to say about water: ‘I’m free and happy there. Free and happy. I feel like you because the world is so noisy, but in the water, I’m free.’ That’s what it’s about. This is Martin Pollock, a veteran from the UK. [He] returned from service missing both legs and an arm. Now, Martin is a surfer; he sees himself as a surfer. He’s an ambassador. Not only is he an ambassador for surfing, he is an ambassador for the ocean, for our waters.” Well, it’s no wonder surfers are drawn back to these aquatic playgrounds, which offer so many health benefits, regardless of whether one is just beginning or at an advanced level. Majestic scenery and wildlife are often also encountered while venturing out to the beach and surrounding areas. Dolphins and other wildlife touch our souls when we experience them in their natural environments.

Bettering Children’s Mental and Emotional Health Through A Wholesome Diet

Growing research reveals that the food we eat can also significantly influence how we feel emotionally and socially. Even a small, positive dietary change may thus improve a child’s cognitive functions and prevent or reduce behavioral health issues. The UK’s Mental Health Foundation refers to diet as an“underestimated” determinant of mental wellness. A healthy diet is significantly related to better emotional health, such as higher self-worth and fewer temperament issues. The findings further revealed that good relationships with parents and peers are associated with eating fruits and vegetables every day.

We are privileged to have Dr. William Glatt, an esteemed internal and addiction medicine specialist, share with us his expert knowledge on opioids, pain treatment, and the nature of drug addiction. Opioids are morphine-like chemicals primarily used as analgesics to relieve severe pain. However, employing opioids for pain management has its inherent risks. Pain management need not be drug-based as there are many options available. Nowadays, more people are using meditation for pain issues. Inner contemplation is also another way to prevent, control, or resolve certain long-term conditions.

Tzu Chi Medical Foundation’s Healthcare Professionals on Optimal Wellness, Part 3 of 3

There are several principles for a healthy vegan diet. The first one is to eat whole foods. Some foods are advertised as vegan but they may be heavily processed. For example, sugary drinks and some vegan snacks may be vegan, but they are not healthy. So, on a regular basis, we encourage everyone to eat more whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruit, nuts, seeds, and the like. In general, we should eat real food instead of those processed products. The second principle is to pay attention to several nutrients that vegans need. It is necessary to be exposed to the Sun for 10 to 15 minutes a day.

A team of scientists from Harvard University’s School of Public Health in the US completed a meta-study in October 2016 using data from 131342 participants who were tracked for more than 26 years in two separate medical studies to determine how diet relates to wellness and longevity. As reported in the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” the researchers concluded that replacing animal protein with plant protein was associated with a decreased risk of death. The most important factor in maintaining health and vitality has got to be what we put inside our bodies, and luckily that’s also what we’ve got the most control over.
