The Unique and Amazing Galápagos Marine Iguanas

The Unique and Amazing Galápagos Marine Iguanas

You will not find marine iguanas like me anywhere else in our world. We are the only sea-going lizards! When marine iguanas don’t have enough to eat, they not only become thinner, they also become shorter. Scientists have observed that during times of EI Niño-induced food shortages, our bodies shrink in length and then regrow when food becomes plentiful again. The researchers think that we actually digest up to 20% of our bones to survive. Adult iguanas can switch between shrinkage and growth repeatedly throughout their lifetime – a perfect adaptation to EI Niño events.

Cleaner Wrasses: The Dentists of The Sea

Cleaner Wrasses: The Dentists of The Sea

As you learn about our species, you will be amazed by the job we do. We work just like a beauty salon in the human world. I forgot to tell you that I have a big family, including four unique cousins: the Black Spot, the Hawaiian, the bicolor, and the red lip. All my cousins live mostly in the tropical Pacific Ocean. My kind, the bluestreak, is the most well-known cleaner wrasse of them all. We love to be around coral-rich areas so we can operate our “cleaning stations” better. People describe us as “slender fish with pointed snouts.” The smallest cousin of mine is the red lip wrasse who is about 9 centimeters in length, and the biggest one in the family is the bicolor wrasse. They potentially reach up to 15 centimeters. We all have “tweezer-like” teeth, which help us do our cleaning job easily, so our clients will no longer suffer from parasites and absolutely enjoy quality lives. Compared to other marine friends, we are very colorful. Black spots are quite attractive cousins of mine. Before settling down to work, they love to perform a fascinating dance for the clients to relax, so they can do their jobs better. We bluestreak and our Hawaiian cousins have similar lifestyles. We all like to do business with big clients. If ready for the service, the customer will become stationary, stretch out their fins and open their gill covers. Hawaiian wrasses can enter inside the mouth and gill chambers of the large fish to clean. Unlike other varieties of cleaner wrasse, they do not burrow into the sand at night. They rest in a “balloon-like cocoon” that they build using mucus layers. Do you know what is remarkable about bicolor wrasses and us, the bluestreak cleaner wrasses? The strongest female can turn into a male when the only male in the group dies so that babies can keep being produced. Fish don’t have good tools to clean themselves with, and we have a very loving personality, so we decided to help out. We work four hours a day, seeing more than 2,000 clients!

World Day for Farmed Animals: The Life All Animals Wish For, Part 1 of 2

World Day for Farmed Animals: The Life All Animals Wish For, Part 1 of 2

Today, October 2nd is World Day for Farmed Animals. On this day, attention is drawn to the abuse and mass exploitation of animals for food and other uses. It is estimated that more than 70 billion cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and other innocent animals are raised and slaughtered each year. Let’s hope this annual day of remembrance serves as a wake-up call for humanity to understand the suffering of these animals and help to put an end to this barbaric industry. These animals are all needlessly forced to endure tremendous pain, torment and death just to provide meat, eggs and dairy foods for humans, food that makes them sick and makes us suffer. Animal factories are large industrial operations where humans breed, raise and kill large numbers of animals to turn into food just to please their palates. Most of these animals never see the sun or the sky, or feel the grass beneath their feet. They are kept prisoners for their entire lives, even though they have done nothing wrong. The entire purpose of the animal livestock industry is to turn animals into food as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible, in order to maximize profits. Animals are treated simply as a commodity, like manufactured goods, while we endure unbearable agony and misery. There are so many issues with these inhumane industries. Humans are not only taking the precious lives of animals, but also harming themselves, their countries and the planet. That road leads to self-destruction! Yes, one of the many problems created by the animal factories, meat consumption, or both, is zoonotic diseases that have killed many, like the Spanish Flu, AIDS, Ebola, Avian Influenza, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Mad Cow Disease, and even COVID-19. There will be more pandemics if humans don’t stop eating animals. Another risk to society from animal factories is antibiotic resistant infections.

The Sweet and Gentle Chinchillas

I’ve heard many people say, “Aww, he’s so adorable!” But if you really want to see how cute a chinchilla can be, you should check out my cousin BuBu. She has lots of photos and videos on Facebook and Instagram. Our super-soft fur is what we are famous for, but it is also the reason why we have almost become extinct in the wild. I’ll bet you’ve never seen a chinchilla in the wild. There are a few reasons for that. Number one: When was the last time you climbed over 3,000 meters? Number two: How well can you see in the dark?

The Heavenly Attributes of Animals

We animals have many seen and unseen abilities ̶ such as giving individuals timely assistance during dangerous situations as well as helping with everyday tasks. Though we may not speak any human language, our pure, unconditional loving qualities can transcend communication barriers and bring much happiness and meaning into people’s lives. We have the honor to profile several animals on our program who have heroically aided or saved people or other animals because of the true love in their hearts!

Four Seasons, Part 2: Lively Serenades of Summer Nights

16:35

Four Seasons, Part 2: Lively Serenades of Summer Nights

Welcome to “Four Seasons, Part 2 of 4: Lively Serenades on Summer Nights.” Our band of frogs take charge of the opening act. Our song serves as the Overture for the nocturnal symphony. When we start singing, we breathe in and then close our nostrils and mouths; the airflow in our lungs triggers our vocal sacs which expand and amplify our notes. Our neighbors seem to think that we are equipped with built-in loudspeakers! We must belt out our distinctive songs since the females will distinguish and only answer the call of males of their own species. The ladies have a preference for the loudest-singing males, so we tenors, baritones and basses must sing quite a powerful tune to attract their attention! The toads, our not-so-distant cousin residing on dry land, also have a part in the romantic nocturnal opera. So, if you hear their characteristic croaking sounds emanating from the land, you will have met our jazzy cousins rehearsing their serenade – just like we frogs do, except we perform ours on water. In this musical hall, frogs and toads are the opening act preparing the stage for the nights’ headline act! Yes, the divas will soon take the stage, and when the majestic owls soar into the spotlight, their hoots will indeed complete the symphony with music and mystery. Owls are mostly nocturnal animals and each impart a distinctive repertoire throughout the night. An owl will generate unique hoot to express specific intentions, such as to claim a territory, or to attract or communicate with a mate. A bonded pair of owls will often engage in a romantic duet, particularly during given phases of the moon. Another staple of summer is the loud yet comforting and seemingly unceasing chirps of crickets! In fact, the higher the temperature, the faster they chirp, and their volume can reach over 100 decibels! Male crickets produce their tunes by raising their wings to a 45-degree angle and rubbing the sharp edge of one wing - the scraper - against the file-like wrinkles on the other wing. Each species sings their own repertoire, and the harmony of their high-pitched thrills and low-pitched hums produces quite an orchestral on these enchanting summer nights!

The Secrets That Cats Keep, Part 1 of 2

As a matter of fact, two researchers did some experiments and found strong evidence that we cats are sensitive to human emotional cues. They found that the cats behaved differently when their caregivers was smiling compared to when they were frowning. When faced with their smiling companion, a cat was much more likely to show affectionate behavior such as purring, rubbing or sitting on their lap. The cats also seemed to want to spend more time with their smiling human friend than when he or she was frowning.

Bats - Our Invisible Friends with Kristin Tieche (vegetarian), Part 2 of 2

In part 1 Ms. Tieche shared with us that her purpose in making “The Invisible Mammal” was to increase awareness of the threats we are facing and to show how important bats are to humans and ecosystems. In today’s program, we’ll uncover more of the devastating diseases that bats have been suffering from and what humans can do to help save us. "When they get white-nose syndrome, this is a fungus that attacks bats during hibernation, when they're in the state of torpor. And then the bats will wake up more often during hibernation and burn up all of their energy reserves. Then they lose their fat reserves before the end of hibernation, so they end up perishing." Kristin tells us where most scientists believe this fatal disease affecting us came from. “It most likely was tracked to North America by humans. They believe that a tourist must have tracked in the fungus and introduced this new fungus to North American bats.”What can humans do to help prevent bats from contracting this awful disease? Kristin suggests a few solutions. "The solutions are basically decontamination and then finding a non-invasive way to help bats survive the hibernation period. People who want to enter these habitats will have to decontaminate their shoes and any surfaces that might touch the walls of the cave or the hibernacula." By deepening your understanding of the relationship between bats and the ecosystem, Kristin hopes that you will be able to see the positive impact we have on human lives and the planet altogether. "There are some studies that show that we've lost 70% of our biodiversity. And we definitely depend on all of the species to make our entire ecosystem work. So, when we lose one species, there's a whole chain effect, a domino effect, that happens, because there's all these species that depend on that one species. We have to protect all of them. This is a really important piece to understand that the biodiversity of our world, and climate change, it's all connected. And there are so many ways that we can have a lighter footprint on our planet and being a vegetarian is one of them."

Animals Are Love

18:37

Animals Are Love

When we love the animals, our love will naturally develop. Those of you who are taking care of dogs, birds, or other pets, know how it’s like. When you are with them, and when you look at them, you just want to love them. You can’t think of anything else, and there is nothing you can do about it. You just want to love them and pamper them. Then, naturally your home is permeated with this ambience of love. It will engulf our whole house, our home, and eventually it will spread to the world. If there is such a loving atmosphere in every home, the world will definitely be in peace.

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 1 of 2

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 1 of 2

Many humans already know that the Honorable Mayor Fasi of Honolulu declared the 25th of October as the “Day of Supreme Master Ching Hai” on behalf of the United States Government in 1993. So, today I am honored to share what Supreme Master Ching Hai day represents to us animals. Our beloved Master has mentioned on many occasions how intuitive animals are. I would like to share some words that my wise friend Lumino, the Eastern Rosella, shared with animal communicator Simonne Lee. If Lumino looks familiar to you, that’s because he was featured in Supreme Master Ching Hai’s bestselling book the Birds in My Life. “(Not just him, a lot of time with them, communicating with them. It's like She sings and they're drawn to the vibration of Her voice. It's very clear, what She radiates, because I've felt it from their end, how they are feeling it towards Her. It's amazing. He loves it.)” “So, the animals, in the wild even, they meditate all the time. I just remind them or probably remind myself of God, so at night before they sleep or whenever we’re together sometime, I sing to them at night, to sleep like, “Remember God, you are divine, you’re beautiful,” something like that.” We animals also love Supreme Master Ching Hai because to us She is “love in action.” Lumino also described this to Simonne. “’We are here to evolve the world, to lift it. And the more people that are aware of this, the bigger the possibility of it.’ (She (Supreme Master Ching Hai) lifts it and lifts it and lifts it further.)” On one occasion when our esteemed Master was asked about Her mission here on Earth, this is what She stated… “My real mission? Just to uplift the world’s whole consciousness.” Supreme Master Ching Hai continues to uplift the world through Her diligent, intensive meditation. I think it’s largely because of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s vast efforts that people are forging deeper relationships with us animals. There was once a goat who came to Master for help. “She worried that the so-called owner will eat her calves. Because she knew that I could intervene and save her children and her family. So I said to him that the goat thanks him. So I say thank you for promising to keep her family alive, and that’s what it is.”

The Secrets That Cats Keep, Part 2 of 2

14:13

The Secrets That Cats Keep, Part 2 of 2

Researchers have analyzed the purrs of many different cats and have determined that the sounds we make are mostly within the range of 20 to 140 hertz. Experiments have shown that vibrations in this range are therapeutic for bone growth, pain relief, mending fractures, reducing swelling, wound healing, muscle growth and repair, breathing difficulties, and relieving migraines. So, when we cats get injured, we may purr to stimulate our own healing. What’s more – since we know we have this ability – we will often cuddle up and purr when our human companion in hurt or sick, because we want to help.

Christmas Animals from Around the World

Christmas Animals from Around the World

Christmas Day is now here. As you might have noticed, around this time of year there are plenty of cute animals representing the Christmas spirit in TV shows, films, greeting cards, decorations and so on. These Christmas icons have developed over time based on myths and stories from different cultures. We reindeer are the animals that pull Santa Claus’s sled and guide him all over the world. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a fictional reindeer created in 1939 by Robert Lewis May. Aside from reindeer, many other animals are closely connected with Christmas, including partridges and turtle doves which are featured in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” In most Western ecclesiastical traditions, December 25 is considered the First Day of Christmas and ends 12 days later on January 5. In this context, the partridge symbolizes Jesus Christ, a Gift sent by God! Doves are frequently mentioned in the Holy Bible and are symbols of peace, love and loyalty. Britain’s national bird is frequently depicted on festive greeting cards and Christmas gift wrap. This originates from the postman delivering Christmas cards in the 19th century. As a symbol of divine sacrifice, the English robin is also closely related with a legend of Christ’s birth. On the first Christmas, it is said that the night was extremely cold. The Baby Jesus slept happily, thanks to the robin. According to European folklore, roosters were assigned to announce the glorious birth of Jesus to the people. Around midnight, the first rooster cried out in a human voice, “Christ is born!” The second followed, “In Bethlehem!” The final Christmas animal, the Yule goat, is not a real one. In Sweden, the goat was viewed as an invisible spirit that came before Christmas to check that all the preparations for the holiday were finished. Supreme Master Ching Hai is the Santa Claus for Her adorable dogs on Christmas Day! Many kinds of animals worldwide are connected to Christmas, and I can assure you that each species associated with this holy day is quite proud of this distinction!

Megabat – The Amazing Vegan Flying Fox

Megabat – The Amazing Vegan Flying Fox

We are frugivorous and nectarivorous and thus love nectar and pollen from the flowers of trees. Moreover, we eat various fruits like bananas, mangos, figs, dates and avocados – almost any kind of pulpy fruit is good for us. Because fruit is one of our primary foods, we are also known as fruit bats. We are also called flying foxes because we can soar in the air and our cute, furry faces look quite a bit like that of a fox! Bats, including megabats and microbats, are the only mammals capable of real and sustained flight with our own wings.

We are the heaviest known bony fish in the world, look like a laterally flattened oval disc. One of our fascinating characteristics is that we don’t have a real tail or caudal fin, and our back end looks truncated. It is pretty normal if you find us floating on the surface of the water with one side up towards the sun. We are well-known as the ultimate sunbathers, and that is why we are called sunfish.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Loving Animal-People

15:18

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Loving Animal-People

It is the Land of the Heart, and in Islam the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, always resides there, along with numerous loving animal-people companions of all shapes and sizes. And in the wise teachings of the Holy Qurʾān, animal-people are no different from humans: “There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our Decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.” ~ Holy Qur’an 6:38During the Hijrah, the True One (Peace Be Upon Him) and His devout follower Abū Bakr AS-SSiddiq fled Mecca for Medina in the night to avoid the assassins who were hunting them. At one point they took refuge in a cave, but soon afterwards their pursuers found the cave. The assassins did not enter the cave to look for them, however, for in the short time since the Beloved (Peace Be Upon Him) and Abū Bakr AS-SSiddiq had entered the cave, a spider-person had spun a silvery web across the opening of the cave, and a pair of dove-persons had nested at the entrance. Together they made it appear that no one had entered the cave for a long time, thus protecting the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, from the sharp iron swords of the assassins. The Beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was credited with taking care of a cat-person companion Himself. According to Hadīth, the cat-person companion of the Beloved (Peace Be Upon Him), was called Muezza, and he was known to rest on the lap of the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, when He gave lectures. Not only is His love for animal-people clear in the Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) actions, but the Hadīth also warns of the punishments that await those who are cruel to people from the animal kingdom. From these stories we can see that in the Land of the Heart, even a seemingly small action, like that of the spider-person weaving his web of protection and the dove-persons nesting at the entrance to help the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) hide, or quenching the thirst of a dog-person, can have profound ramifications, so it’s important to make the most of every opportunity, however small, to show kindness towards Allah’s creations.

Guanacos and vicunas are the wild camelids of South America. Guanacos are experts at communicating through body language. After they haven’t seen each other for some time, they greet one another by standing nose to nose and waggling their tails horizontally or in a U-shape. The vicuna is the national animal of Peru and part of the Peruvian coat of arms.

We alpacas are truly the grace bestowed by the Earth Goddess, Pachamama on the Andes. Our soft-padded feet minimize our impact on meadows. After we graze, the grassland is usually in good condition. We are here to demonstrate a virtue and a need to keep in harmony with Mother Earth. We alpacas are also very social. We live in herds with our families and friends and feel stressed if we are isolated from our community.

The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed

14:59

The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed

Welcome to our show titled “The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed.” Life can be full of ups and downs. Many people seek comfort and peace in spirituality by praying, meditating, doing yoga, or attending services at a house of worship. Have you ever wondered if animals also practice spiritually? There are many clips showing animals seemingly praying to God or Buddha. A pig in Qiaotou, a small town in southeastern China, was seen worshipping the Buddha in front of a temple. The pig kneeled on the ground for a long while and didn’t wish to leave. It wasn’t until the monks came out from the temple to recite sutras that the pig left. “Animals also have souls and they understand everything. They can also practice. They might not be, maybe, a saintly person who goes out preaching and things like that, but they can practice to liberate themselves out of the Three Worlds, or at least they come to the Third Level. Even the wild birds and animals outside, many of them are high level.” Jixiang was sadly abandoned and became a stray dog. Fortunately, a kind old lady found him and brought him to the Dajue Temple in Hsinchu, Taiwan, also known as Formosa. When coming to the temple, the old lady said to him, “Here you must listen to monks’ words and practice vegetarianism!” He was then named Jixiang, which means auspicious in Chinese. Since being adopted by the temple, he eats only vegetarian food and attends the prayer rituals with the monks both day and night. In southern Japan, a black-and-white chihuahua named Conan prays. Every day, Conan joins the Reverend Chief Priest Joei Yoshikuni in conducting the daily services at the Shuri Kannondo temple in Naha, the capital of Japan’s Okinawa prefecture. “Do all animals know God?” “They know God more than we do, unfortunately. They know nothing but God, they rely on nothing but God, they love nothing more than God. They communicate with none but God, I mean inner, higher, deeper communication but with God.” We animals do have a spiritual nature and are quietly practicing throughout our world. I hope the stories in our show will inspire everyone to pursue spiritual practice and endeavor to find God within.
