The Buddha practiced a similar way, many austerity measures and ascetic lives, but he yearned for love. And he practiced love all the time during his practice, as whenever he could, whenever he already had knowledge more than when he wasn’t enlightened. At some stage of his development, he wasn’t also enlightened, the Buddha, and did harm to other beings as well. But the more and more he developed, he yearned to develop in love and compassion. So, that's what he got.
