The Mysterious Animal-People that Reside in Our Oceans

Today, we will share some of our glorious underwater world’s most interesting recent findings. Our first fascinating fish-citizen has teeth that can bite through coral and rock! Humphead parrotfish-people are the world’s largest parrotfish-person species and one of the largest of all reef fish-folk, growing to a size of 1.3 meters and 46 kilograms. They can live up to 40 years old!

Another discovery of the MBARI team is the Crossota millsae, nicknamed the psychedelic jellyfish-person. These wondrous creatures have beautifully colored long and curly tentacles and live at depths between 1,000-3,300 meters below the ocean’s surface! When disturbed, the jellyfish-person pulls all the tentacles into its body and uses them as a powerful force to quickly swim to safety. “Monterey Bay is the best-studied patch of deep ocean on the planet, and yet we’re still finding new things every time we go out. It’s exciting to think that there’s that much more to be discovered in the rest of the world’s oceans.”

We will now explore the coastal waters of northeastern Taiwan (Formosa). In June 2023, video footage of a unique ocean-citizen was captured by divers. Unusually, these species, known as oarfish-people, are typically found in the deeper regions, making this coastal sighting a rare occasion.

Is it possible that one known species of fish-person has been living within our oceans for around 280 million years? A fossil of the Chimaera-folk, or ghost shark-person, has proven this to be possible. The Chimaera-individual, a prehistoric ancestor to the modern-day shark-person, lives in all oceans besides the Antarctic and can be found at depths ranging from coastal waters to 2,600 meters below.

If you are looking for one of the cutest ocean citizens, look no further than the piglet-squid person. When seen face on, it has the look of a giant smile across its face. What a cutie!

If you were to think of the most famous folklore creature within the oceanic underworld, it would have to be the mermaid. Many famous explorers have claimed to have seen the mythical creature, including Christopher Columbus in 1493, Henry Hudson in 1608, and Captain John Smith in 1611. In 2009, in the Israeli town of Kiryat Yam, an influx of independent sightings claimed to witness a mermaid appearing at sunset directly off the coast. Onlookers described the creature as half woman, half fish-person, jumping like a dolphin-individual.
