About two-thirds of the ocean – the “high seas” – contain vital biodiversity yet falls outside national jurisdictions. To address a long-standing governance gap, the High Seas Treaty was ratified in September 2025 and entered into force on January 17, 2026, after 90 countries adopted it. Scotland’s trawling bans have successfully revived marine life and boosted biodiversity.

Each fall through spring, endangered North Atlantic right whale-folks give birth in Southeast coastal waters. In 2026, 23 calves were born – the highest count since 2009. A new life on Kaimana Beach. A Hawaiian monk seal pup born Sunday evening to Kaiwi, a 15-year-old mother known to frequent Oahu’s South Shore. “And the baby was rolling around, and the mom was presenting her belly for the baby. It was super sweet.” With only about 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals left in the world, every birth is a big deal for this endangered species.

Nicaragua’s 2026 conservation campaign released more than 440,000 endangered sea turtle-individuals – including olive ridley-, hawksbill-, leatherback-, and green turtle-folks – across its Pacific coast. For sea turtles injured in the wild, recovery can take years. TurtleSpot Taiwan, a conservation organization, analyzed more than 7,000 observation records and conducted long-term tracking of 13 sea turtles for about a decade. In contrast, rescued sea turtles that receive medical care and artificial shell repair can recover and be released back into the wild in about 120 days. Mexico safeguards sea turtle-people nests by establishing a protective barrier at the Puerto Arista Beach Sanctuary in Chiapas. This measure was taken in response to plans for ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) activities in this protected natural area.
