One of the central points of “Half Earth Socialism” is that we need to radically transform our economic systems in order to address the environmental crises facing our planet. “They suspect that over the next 25 years or so, demand for petroleum will actually increase by 50%. We’re still very far from very high taxes on carbon, and then we still will probably have geoengineering, this intentional modification of the Earth’s atmosphere, which is extremely dangerous.” “Different countries would disagree about how they’re manipulating the climate. Growth rates are slowing down, inequality is increasing, the Earth is being destroyed, and the capitalist class isn’t doing anything. And Drew and I are actually working on a second book where we will get much more into planning theory and try to outline how socialist planning could work.”

Dr. Vettese explains that the vegan socialist framework can resolve a wide range of issues on our planet. “If we are serious in terms of actually trying to stop mass extinction, we need to preserve more wildlife, more areas of land. E.O Wilson, he talks about the idea of the ‘Half Earth.’ That’s where we get the title of our book from. If we preserve half of the Earth instead of just 10 or15%, which is what we’re doing right now, then still some species will go extinct. So if we get all this land, we have to take it from the animal industry, livestock industry. That’s why we have to be vegan. It’s an easy way to solve a whole range of problems.” “We are living in an age of ever-increasing zoonotic spillover because we have destroyed so much wild habitat, but also have created this population of billions of domesticated animals that act as incubators for these zoonotic diseases that go into pigs or horses, whatever, that jump to us. People didn’t have disease or communicable diseases before animal domestication 10,000 years ago. We should be talking about this all the time, and we should be combining veganism with this public health goal.”
