In Part 1, we learned that the mission of this Tennessee, USA-based organization is to rescue vulnerable horses. Unfortunately, a large percentage of horses auctioned off in the US are exported to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. They are transported abroad because killing horses for human consumption is illegal in America. The charity saves many equines by purchasing them at auctions. "These animals need help, and I believe that we were put on this Earth to take care of the Earth and the animals that are here, and they need somebody to be their voice because they have none. We go to these auctions and see some horses in horrible condition, and if we weren’t there, we wouldn’t be able to tell their stories. We wouldn’t be able to be their voice to say this is what’s happening."

"We’re able to rescue those horses; we bring them back to our shelter. They’re given veterinary care; they’re given farrier care; they’re given all the care they need. Then we find them homes. That’s our goal. We only have roughly 50 acres (20 hectares), 40 - 50 acres (16-20 acres) that we can use, and we could fill that up and then we’d be done. And then we’d have to say no to all the horses that are being shipped to slaughter. So, we find them homes; we adopt them out. We have horses in Hawaii; we have horses all over the United States, down in Florida. It’s fantastic that people are willing to open their homes to horses that need help. And every time a horse finds a home, we can rescue another horse."

As we’ve heard, Tawnee and Jason are both steadfastly determined to save horses from abattoirs. They also have something else in common – they were both born into vegan families. “And in my mind, I don’t differentiate between eating a cat, eating a dog, eating a horse, eating a cow, eating a chicken; to me, they are all living animals.”
