India, a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion recipient, supports the well-being of Palestinian refugees.

The government of India has contributed US$2 million as part of its US$5 million pledge for 2020 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The funding will be used for the agency’s essential programs, including health care, education and social services. UNRWA Chief of Donor Relations Marc Lassouaoui said, “The continued determination and commitment of India in support of Palestinian refugees is commendable, in particular under the current circumstances brought on us by COVID-19. We are extremely proud of this solid partnership and grateful for the generous contribution.” Our gratitude, India and UNRWA, for your assistance. Italian government grants unregistered migrants the right to stay.

Italy has approved a six-month renewable work permit for 560,000 people, allowing them to legally reside in the country after recognizing their contributions during the coronavirus outbreak. In particular, the migrants have been working on farms harvesting produce for the nation’s food supply, and in homes as caregivers for the elderly. Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, the Honorable Teresa Bellanova, proposed the permits with the support of Minister for the South, the Honorable Giuseppe “Peppe” Provenzano. Minister Provenzano said of the amnesty, “The food on our table comes from these fields. Now we must hand over those rights which have been denied to those who work in them.” Our appreciation, Ministers Teresa Bellanova and Giuseppe “Peppe” Provenzano, and Italy, for your caring and wise measure. Mexican company makes fuel from cactus fruit.

Nopalimex, founded by Rogelio Sosa López and Miguel Angel Aké Madera from Mexico, has turned the nopal, or prickly pear, into biofuel, after the inedible waste products are collected from the production of nopal-based tortillas and nachos. The native cactus fruit requires little water and grows abundantly across the arid regions of Mexico. More than 100 metric tons of relatively cleaner, less expensive gasoline can be produced from one acre of nopal fields, and the company is already running their entire business from the fuel they produce. An agreement has also been signed with the local government of Zitácuaro to supply the green fuel for use in their official vehicles, such as police cars and ambulances. Way to go, Nopalimex, on your innovative and resourceful business. We pray, in Celestial grace, that the gifts of the Earth shall always be prudently used and cherished.

Study shows Britons are quitting smoking due to COVID-19.

A recent survey by YouGov, a United Kingdom-based market research firm, concluded that 300,000 citizens throughout the UK quit smoking due to concerns of being more vulnerable to the virus. Of the thousand smoking respondents, 2% reported that they quit the habit because of COVID-19 fears, while 8% have tried to stop, 36% have reduced their cigarette consumption, and 27% said they are now more likely to quit. The survey was conducted in conjunction with the UK-based public health charity Action on Smoking and Health, whose chairman Dr. Nick Hopkinson stated, “Evidence is growing that smoking is associated with worse outcomes in those admitted to hospital with COVID-19.” Fantastic work, YouGov and Action on Smoking and Health. Kenyan boy awarded for hand-washing invention to prevent spread of COVID-19.

Nine-year-old Stephen Wamukota, a primary school student in western Kenya, received a Presidential Order of Service, Uzalendo (Patriotic) Award for his hands-free hand-washing machine that dispenses soap and water through a foot pedal. Stephen was inspired to build it after viewing a television program about COVID-19 prevention and seeing the struggles of people trying to wash their hands safely. Stephen’s father, James, gave finishing touches to his son’s creation and then posted about it on social media. The news was well-received, with the county governor even pledging to give Stephen a scholarship to fulfill his aspirations of becoming an engineer. Vegan food sales surge during COVID-19.

According to wellness-focused data technology company SPINS and the Plant Based Foods Association – both United States-headquartered, sales of vegan food increased more than other food types during the pandemic. In the peak month of March, plant-based product sales were up by 90% compared to the same time last year. Refrigerated vegan meat saw the biggest increase at 241% in mid-March and continued to grow another 113% through April. Vegan cheese, tofu and tempeh have also seen significantly stronger sales. The data reveals that since the beginning of the pandemic, people have been shifting their diets towards organic, natural and plant-based foods that increase immunity and health. Orphaned orangutans learn survival skills at Indonesian forest school.

Since its opening in May 2018, FOUR PAWS Orangutan Forest School in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan has been preparing eight young apes for their return to the wild. Led by Dr. Signe Preuschoft, a primatologist at Austria-based global animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS International, the 100-hectare school was opened in collaboration with the country’s government and a local orangutan rehabilitation facility called Jejak Pulang. Both FOUR PAWS and the Indonesian government are Shining World Compassion Award laureates. At the school, orphaned orangutans learn essential survival skills from Dr. Preuschoft and her team of caregivers, who also provide loving comfort to the group’s younger darlings. Master took care of my late father by bringing him to a higher Heaven. I had attended the Father’s Day celebration at the New Land Ashram and returned with the blessed food that Master handed out, to begin my 7-day retreat at home. At 3 am of the third day, my father appeared and asked for the blessed food that Master had given me. He said that with this blessed (vegan) cookie, he could enter a higher and immensely blissful pure land. So I offered 9 pieces of the blessed cookies to my father when paying my morning respect to Master. He was so happy and expressed thanks to Master. I’m so thankful to Master for bringing my father to the New Spiritual Realm. When my father passed away in 2003, I saw that Master led him to the Paradise. At that time, I was working abroad and didn’t know that my father had passed away. My family called me the next day about my father. This time, Master brought my father to a higher pure land, even more immensely blissful than the Paradise. Thank You, Master! Thank You, God! I love Master and love God forever!
