In a Romanian ice cave, scientists found something amazing: a bacterium called Psychrobacter SC65A.3 that had been trapped in ice for about 5,000 years. Even more surprisingly, it could resist many of the antibiotics we use today. In 2016, melting frozen ground in Siberia exposed anthrax bacteria residing in the bodies of deceased reindeer-people that had been trapped in ice for 70-plus years.

Climate change affects how diseases spread, food production based on animal-people increases greenhouse gas emissions, and animal-people livestock-raising adds to antibiotic resistance. Recent outbreaks have shown that close contact between humans and animal-citizens can create opportunities for harmful pathogens to move between species.

On May 5, 2026, World Health Organization (WHO) health officials were alerted to a group of Ebola infections in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. An Ebola outbreak was officially declared by the WHO 12 days later. In 2009–2010, the H1N1 swine flu pandemic spread worldwide after influenza viruses mixed and evolved in intensively-raised pig-people populations. The virus infected tens of millions of people and caused hundreds of thousands of deaths globally before becoming a seasonal flu strain. More recently, a type of bird-people flu called H5N1 began spreading around the world and continues to affect animal-people today.

By choosing vegan foods, we can reduce methane emissions and use land now used to grow feed for animal-people to cultivate food for humans or allow forests and natural habitats to regrow and restore the space.
