American veterinarian Dr. Richard H. Pitcairn (vegan), a pioneer in holistic veterinary medicine, and his wife, Susan Hubble Pitcairn (vegan) – author, poet, and painter – co-authored the landmark book “Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats.” “Over a period of time, I gradually learned the poor quality of the foods that were being produced for dogs and cats. When animals are slaughtered, they’re examined. If they have diseases in them, or they have tumors, or they have abscesses, or whatever – those parts of the animal go into pet food. That was shocking to me to find that out.” “But what was more important was to find out that there’s many chemicals that are in the water and air now. And so the animals that are eating on pastures are taking in these chemicals.” “Or in the case of fish, it’s like they concentrate toxins that are in the ocean to levels that are like a million times more than what it is in the surroundings, that water.” “Here’s the fact: the actual number of chemicals that have been approved by the FDA – that are synthetic, that are now used in various ways – is 100,000. In the US, when babies are born, they have over 300 chemicals in their bodies.”

“Those of you that have had cats know it’s a very common problem now that cats have inflammation of their gums, red lines along the teeth, teeth rotting and falling out. That’s the symptoms of mercury poisoning. Most commercial cat foods have fish in them, from the ocean.” “And then a lot of it, it’s actually fed to livestock that are raised then for meat. So it’s fed to cows, which is very unnatural for them to eat, since they’re the true herbivores.” “The studies have been done in vegans, that levels of toxins in their bodies compared to omnivores, it’s like 2 to 5%.” “We came up with, in our book, in the fourth edition, emphasizing plant-based recipes, so the amount of chemicals that dogs and cats are getting is much, much less than if they’re eating animals. So that was the only solution I came up with.”
