The Global Peace Index provides a holistic measurement of peace. It now ranks 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world's population. With the GPI in mind, are you excited to discover the top 10 most peaceful countries? According to the 2024 Global Peace Index, launched in June each year, these nations are leading the way in peace. In these countries, there's very little crime. We kids can play outside without worrying too much! These countries ensure that we have good schools, doctors, and support when needed.

First up, we celebrate Iceland, a country that has proudly held the title of the most peaceful nation for 16 consecutive years. Interestingly, Iceland maintains no standing army, relying instead on a robust social welfare system, exceptional education, and a close-knit community that fosters harmony and well-being. The country’s dedication to peace is reflected in its political stability, low corruption, and low crime.

Next, we shine a light on Ireland, which is number 2 on the Global Peace Index and consistently ranks among the world’s most peaceful nations. Now, we turn our attention to Austria, ranked 3rd for its commitment to peace and excellence in income, employment, and housing. Our focus next shifts to New Zealand, which is ranked 4th and surpasses the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average in education, healthcare, and earnings.

Following in 5th place is Singapore, a great climber that has soared from 22nd place since 2008 thanks to remarkable societal safety and security efforts. This vibrant city-state is well-known for its cleanliness and modernity, featuring iconic attractions like Marina Bay Sands and Sentosa Island. Next is Switzerland, ranked 6th for its exceptional safety, political stability, and positive international relations. Our journey continues, taking us to Portugal, which is ranked 7th in the GPI.

We arrive now in Denmark, ranked 8th and consistently among the top 10 for stability, press freedom, and income equality. Frequently acknowledged as one of the world’s happiest nations, Denmark boasts a strong community and high quality of life. Moving on to Slovenia, securing 9th place, this country is featured for its captivating biodiversity and natural beauty. Finally, let’s head to Malaysia, making its debut in the top 10 with impressive progress.

Even if we don’t live in one of the top ten most peaceful countries, we know that many governments and their citizens are making great efforts to maintain or build peace within their nations and with their neighbors so that kids like us can grow up and enjoy life to the fullest. Let's take a moment to think about how we can promote harmony in our own spaces, starting at home and extending to our classrooms, schools, and any group we're a part of. Together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness and understanding that spreads across the globe.
