Bollywood Musical Drama “Hum Saath-Saath Hain”: We Stand United

Sooraj Barjatya (vegetarian), the current chairperson of the Indian media conglomerate Rajshri Productions, is renowned for his talent as a film director, producer, screenwriter, and distributor. The Barjatya family has been vegetarian for more than three generations, and on their film sets, only vegetarian foods are allowed. The film we present today is described by Box Office India as “the biggest blockbuster of the modern era.” It is Sooraj Barjatya’s third hit, the 1999 family drama “Hum Saath-Saath Hain” (We Stand United), which celebrates family values and the affection and love shared among brothers.

The story introduces grief-stricken Ramkishan Chaturvedi, who has lost his first wife and is caring for their son Vivek, then about one year of age. When Ramkishan marries kindly Mamta, they have three more lovely children: Prem, Sangita, and Vinod. Mamta loves and treats Vivek like her own. In turn, Vivek accepts and respects Mamta as his own mother and cares about his young brothers and sister very much.

We then jump to Ramkishan and Mamta’s 25th wedding anniversary, and all the children are grown-up now. Vivek continues to be an immense help to his father with the company work. Ramkishan’s friend Mr. Adarsh and his charming daughter, Sadhna, who have lived abroad for many years, just moved back recently. Sadhna is very impressed by Ramkishan’s happy and loving family and falls in love with Vivek. Soon, the audience will see another big event: a traditional Indian wedding and a warm welcome for Sadhna as she joins the family.

With all his children to be married soon, Ramkishan decides to retire and make Vivek the Managing Director of the company. He looks forward to spending more time with Mamta, his beloved wife. However, Ramkishan’s colleague Mr. Dharamraj is concerned that Vivek will be too powerful. Mr. Dharamraj teams up with Mamta’s three friends to persuade Mamta to interfere and ask Ramkishan to change his decision. Wanting the estate and wealth in her sons’ names, Mamta schemes together with Mr. Dharamraj, throwing Vivek’s family out of the house. Will the tight-knit family be able to overcome this dilemma?
