"Veganism - the Best Medicine for Good Health" with Dr. Jérôme Bernard-Pellet (vegan)

On today’s episode, we meet the highly respected medical doctor, scientist, nutritionist, biostatistician and author from France, Dr. Jérôme Bernard-Pellet. After observing that hospital wards were filled with patients suffering from diseases such as cancers, diabetes, and kidney failure, Dr. Bernard-Pellet decided to conduct intensive research into preventative medicine, with a focus on the relationship between nutrition and health. At first, he was skeptical about the benefits of the vegan lifestyle. After conducting extensive research, Jérôme became an enthusiastic advocate of the vegan diet. He now actively encourages his patients to adopt this lifestyle to improve their health. One question he is frequently asked is, “Should my newborn child be vegan?” “The advice for children is much the same as for adults. So, we encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies. It really is the best food for the baby. If you can't or don't want to breastfeed, well, there are infant formulas that have a soy milk or rice milk base. And therefore, it is quite possible to be a vegan from birth.”Dr. Bernard-Pellet works tirelessly to spread the vegan message to his colleagues, other medical doctors and the general public through his lectures, interviews, and books. In an interview with the magazine “Antidote,” he noted that, when it comes to prevention of disease, the vegan diet remains the best medicine. He confirms that a whole food, plant-based diet helps prevent many kinds of diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative conditions. Dr. Bernard-Pellet is delighted to report that veganism is growing rapidly in France. One indicator of this growth was the first VeggieWorld Fair held in Marseille in December 2017. We end our show today with a parting message from Dr. Jérôme Bernard-Pellet. “My wish for the future is that there is a compassion that is created between all beings, so that it becomes obvious that there is no need to eat animals. All will be much better, including humans and, of course, planet Earth.”

Rodolphe Landemaine (vegan) - A Baker & Pastry Chef Re-inventing France’s Traditional Baking Arts, p3 of 4

Rodolphe Landemaine (vegan) - A Baker & Pastry Chef Re-inventing France’s Traditional Baking Arts, p3 of 4

Today, let us head to Paris for a tour of Land & Monkeys. We are fortunate that Mr. Landemaine will be our personal guide! "In a French boulangerie-pâtisserie, there are four trades. There’s the salty part for lunch; there’s the sweet part with the pastries; there’s the viennoiserie for breakfast; then, there’s the bread." Mr. Landemaine will now show us some of his sandwich offerings. "We substituted all the animal products (with vegan ones), and we manage to have 200 customers come in for lunch in this small eatery." Mr. Landemaine says that the most popular sandwich at Land & Monkeys is the Campagnard, or the “Rustic.” It is a sandwich that contains his homemade “pâté.” "People don’t even realize it’s a vegan 'pâté.' Now, we incorporate hazelnuts, lentils, and so on, to produce a vegan 'pâté,' and the end-result is extraordinary. For the pastry part, the sweet part, we kept the great classics of French bakery: fresh fruit tartlets, lemon meringue tartlets, and there is the chocolate cake with 100% cocoa.” “And for the bread, we have breads from all over the world, namely, the signature breads of each country; for example, the German 'schwartz brot,' the 'sourdough bread' of Anglo-Saxon countries, the Italian 'focaccia,' the French 'baguette.' We use 100% organic flours milled from ancient wheat.” “We urgently need to make this switch. 70 billion (land) animals are eaten every year. This is such an astronomical number, which is not even quantifiable by the common mortal, There is an absolute urgency for ecological reasons, for ethical reasons, and for health reasons to switch to a predominantly plant-based diet. For me, my initiative as a baker is to contribute a small piece of the puzzle, but we need millions of people to come together, so that very, very quickly, humanity approaches a diet of veganism. This is my secret dream, my innermost dream. For those people worldwide who wish to contact me, they are very welcome. There is a website, land-and-monkeys.com They should not hesitate if they want to communicate with us. We are very open. We share a lot of things with people, and we take time to answer questions."

Rodolphe Landemaine (vegan) - A Baker & Pastry Chef Re-inventing France’s Traditional Baking Arts p1 of 4

Veganism has exploded in the last decade, and its rise in popularity is changing the landscape of artisan baking as well. Today, it is our pleasure to explore this coming of age of vegan baking as an artform, we are fortunate to catch up with the award-winning baker & pastry Chef Rodolphe Landemaine of France, at this 100% vegan bakery in Paris, “Land and Monkeys.” Prior to enrolling in the Compagnons du Devoir and Tour de France, Rodolpphe learned the fundamentals of his craft at the vocational school CEPROC (the European Center for Culinary Professions). After six years of education and training, Chef Landemaine opened his first bakery in Paris at the age of 27. In 2014, at the height of his career, Chef Landemaine had an epiphany that would take his life in a new direction. At the time, Rodolphe was a vegetarian in the tradition of his family. “So, I reflected on it all a bit, and it became clear. I became vegan in my heart.” One year after turning vegan, Chef Landemaine set to work looking for ways to veganize the baked goods in his bakery chain. He gradually increased the number of vegan offerings in his stores, with the goal of eventually turning them all fully vegan. “For us, it was really important to say: ‘We want to keep the signature items and classics of the French gastronomy and make them vegan, to show everyone that it is not just a dream, that it is possible to succeed in making these pastries vegan.’” During that time, he also conceived the idea of opening a fully vegan pilot store from scratch. The result was the launch of the 100% vegan bakery “Land and Monkeys” in February 2020, in the heart of Paris. The store has received rave reviews both from the public and his peers.

Quincy Davis – A Compassionate Vegan Athlete and Restaurant Owner, Part 1 of 2

Quincy Davis is a successful vegan professional basketball player and vegan restaurant owner. Today, we are privileged to share Quincy’s perspective of how being vegan helped him on and off the court, and why people should adopt a vegan lifestyle. “I traveled around the world and a lot of times I would get sick and I couldn't figure out what was causing it. The medicine wasn't good enough, so I decided to try something different and try vegan, try not eating too much red meat or any pork or anything like that, and it actually made my body feel much better.” “I think my biggest challenge was first of all ignoring all the naysayers who say that, veganism is not the answer. And the second thing is vegan comes in a different form from vegetarian to vegan.” On his vegan path, Quincy is often asked the same question about where he gets his protein from. His response is full of wisdom: “I tell them it is very simple, a lot of the animals around the world that make up this planet are all herbivores. So naturally, they're eating, fruits and vegetables, and they're some of the biggest and strongest of them all. So, I think there's some kind of truth to that.” Quincy introduces us to his vegan diet that fuels his energy needs for 8 hours of high intensity sports activity every day: “For snacks during the day, I try to eat a lot of nuts and grains that gives me another source of protein and energy. And at night time, I try to have all my foods, I am consuming my vegetables during the night time.” Being a vegan athlete, Quincy’s physical performance has had some positive influences on his teammates: “I think they're starting to retune their minds and think that there must be something to this vegan movement that's going and actually some of my teammates have gone vegan.” In addition to physical benefits, Mr. Davis elaborated how the vegan lifestyle helps him mentally and emotionally: “The daily life is, it’s performing, obviously physically, but the mental and emotional, it's just as important, you still need to have a good attitude and feel good inside out. So, along with the physical, the mental, the spiritual, all needs to take place. And I think that having this vegan lifestyle is the only way to go.”

Tim Barford (vegan) -Trailblazer for UK's Vegan Festivals

Tim Barford (vegan) -Trailblazer for UK's Vegan Festivals

On today’s program we meet Mr. Tim Barford, a dedicated, hard-working, enthusiastic special events organizer devoted to promoting the vegan lifestyle wherever and whenever he can. In 2003, Tim founded VegFest, one of the first vegan festivals in the UK. From humble beginnings, VegFest has since become the largest vegan event in the country. More recently, Tim organized the first Plant Powered Expo, held on February 1st and 2nd, 2020 at Olympia, London. “What’s important here is that Plant Powered Expo very much focuses on the benefits of plant-based living, very much solutions-based, and very much focusing on the health benefits, the food, the environmental impact of living on plant-based diets and following the plant-based lifestyle. Importantly however, it also includes an underpinning aspect of the vegan philosophy. So, the vegan philosophy is 'justice for animals.'” One of the major attractions of Plant Powered Expo was the food. Guests enjoyed free samples of delicious vegan meats, cheeses, pizzas, ice-cream, chocolate, and cakes. In addition to food, Plant Powered Expo encourages people to live greener, more sustainable lives. One aspect of this is environmentally friendly packaging."If you're a frustrated vegan that’s seeing so many people, your friends and family still eating animal products, be patient! Keep promoting that ethical position, but in a calm, friendly, supportive manner. Every time your friends and colleagues choose another plant-based option, celebrate that! ""From an animal justice perspective, it's a need-to, to go vegan. From a global warming perspective, it's a need-to, to adopt a plant-based lifestyle, whenever you can!" Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai speaks frequently about the urgent need for the global switch to a vegan diet, as it would reverse climate change, protect the environment, and save the lives of billions of innocent animals. Furthermore, the vegan diet has great benefits for humans as well, both spiritually and physically.

Healing from the Inside Out with Food - With Chef Day Radley (vegan), Part 2 of 2

Healing from the Inside Out with Food - With Chef Day Radley (vegan), Part 2 of 2

Today, we continue featuring Chef Day Radley, who shines brightly as a torchbearer of the Earth-saving plant-based movement. We were impressed by the success of her culinary school in London, The Vegan Chef Institute, which has produced more than 100 vegan chefs in less than two and a half years since its launch in November 2018. “I set up the school because I wanted to help create better chefs, which would then, in turn, mean that better food is being created in restaurants.” The first culinary course offered at The Vegan Chef Institute was called “Fast-Track Vegan Chef.” It sold out in just six days. Graduates are awarded a diploma, which helps them find employment as vegan chefs. Chef Radley continued developing a second course for home cooks around the world called “Online Vegan Chef Diploma.” Thus, the course focuses on quick, tasty, varied, creative, and nutritious dishes, such as the Green Soup, Vegan Cheese on Toast, and Chocolate Mousse Cake. In June 2021, Chef Radley will team up with nutritionist Rohini Bajekal, a Board-Certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional and a member of Plant-Based Health Professionals UK to develop a third course called “Online Vegan Nutrition Diploma, aiming to help their students understand vegan nutrition and apply that knowledge to meal plans. To lower her carbon footprint, Chef Radley makes a point of sourcing locally produced organic fruits and vegetables as much as possible. For Chef Radley, veganism at its core is about kindness: “So, that isn't just about not eating meat, it's also about being kinder to the planet, being kinder to animals in every single way, being kinder to wildlife, and being kinder to our bodies as well.” Indeed, as our planet edges ever closer to a runaway climate change, kindness to all beings is the only real solution we have, according to our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai. “We will have time to implement other solutions, which is not as urgent as stopping the killing of animals for meat because it is meat that is threatening our planet’s existence. It is meat that causes the global warming.”

Greening French Cuisine with Chef Sébastien Kardinal (vegan), Part 1 of 2

15:23

Greening French Cuisine with Chef Sébastien Kardinal (vegan), Part 1 of 2

On today’s program, we are delighted to introduce the very active, high-profile French vegan chef, food critic, videographer, and author of numerous vegan cookbooks, Sébastien Kardinal. Mr. Kardinal is also a devoted vegan activist who tirelessly protects the lives of animals through his vegan cooking classes, video demonstrations, and as a food critic of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in France. A vegetarian since 1986, Sébastien has been creating plant-based recipes for over 20 years. Sébastien switched from a vegetarian to a vegan lifestyle after he met his partner, Laura, in 2007. Sébastien and his partner, Laura, wanted to do even more to promote the noble, compassionate vegan lifestyle. Together, they co-founded VG-Zone.net, an influential vegan website, providing critiques of restaurants, identifying places to shop for plant-based ingredients, and, of course, sharing latest recipes that they have invented. Then, in 2018, Sébastien started his own YouTube Channel. His book, “À la Française: La Tradition Façon Vegan” or “French Style: Vegan Tradition” combines traditional French gastronomy with vegan cuisine. A Bourguignon or a Blanquette without animal products? Yes, it is possible, delicious and easy! Sébastien offers excellent ways to preserve the spirit of traditional recipes, while making them in a benevolent way, eliminating cruelty to sentient beings and protecting the environment. In his book, “100 Ideas to Replace Meat,” Sébastien shows readers how to create delicious vegan versions of chorizo, ham, steak, and chicken nuggets. There are also delicious dishes which are full of surprises, such as vegan oriental meatballs, chick'in with ginger, and mini burgers sautéed with onions. In the book, “My Little Vegan Creamery,” Mr. Kardinal introduces simple ways to make vegan alternatives for many kinds of dairy products. Using nuts and seeds (cashews, almonds, sesame seeds, etc.), combined with fermentation techniques, Sébastien creates delectable vegan butters and creams, as well as many types of vegan cheeses, including feta, ricotta, and mozzarella. His wonderful recipes convey the clear message that we can still enjoy the French culinary traditions while maintaining the noble, compassionate vegan lifestyle.

Glenn Ratcliffe (vegan) – The Complete Actor with A Mission, Part 1 of 2

Glenn Ratcliffe (vegan) – The Complete Actor with A Mission, Part 1 of 2

We are excited to present to you the journey of the accomplished, charismatic and multi-dimensional Hollywood actor, writer, and producer, Glenn Ratcliffe, who has traversed the full spectrum of roles spanning a 30-year career transforming him into the complete actor he is today. The childhood dream of success as a soccer player was soon shattered when Glenn sustained a broken ankle followed by three more fractures. While living in San Francisco as a construction worker, Glenn was inadvertently asked to attend an “Improv” class that quickly revealed his latent acting abilities. “In the seed of adversity there’s a seed of a gain; there might be something better for someone there, even though they’re so focused on being successful in something. If they don’t do it, it's because maybe there’s a higher calling.”Over time, with deepening meditation and spiritual exposure, Glenn realized that diet played a fundamental and crucial role in spiritual progress. “The veganism, it’s very important to me because, human nature, you could come back and be reincarnated into an animal, an animal you could be eating could be a human last time. So not only is the meat putrefied when the animal is killed, because it sends a signal to the nervous system that putrefies the meat, and the digestive system can’t digest it. It's killing the body, and it’s lowering your spirituality, and bringing karma upon you.”While busy fulfilling his Hollywood dreams, a real-life drama intensified his spiritual evolution. On route to the set he was acting on, Glenn was rammed directly side on by a speeding car running a red light. Life, it seems, had abruptly ended as Glenn’s soul began its journey out of the body. “There was a sense of fourth dimensional consciousness, and then I popped into the Sun. And I just expanded in consciousness, for that split second of Godhood. But that one experience had a profound effect of my immortality, because I know when I die, that's where I go into Light.”

Building Communities through Veganism with Nitin Mehta MBE, Part 2 of 2

Building Communities through Veganism with Nitin Mehta MBE, Part 2 of 2

Mr. Mehta also points out that not only helping our fellow humans but also our animal companions is actually helping ourselves. “So, it’s actually very funny but we are doing no favors to animals. We are actually doing favors to ourselves by being compassionate. Because by the law of karma, every action has a reaction. So, human beings cannot say, Oh, this is our planet and we continue enjoying whatever we do and keep exploiting animals, who also are a part of this planet. They have a share of this planet. And when you do that by the law of karma, it will hit you back and it will hit you very badly. So, when you have wars, when you have cyclones, when you have hurricanes, these are ways of God and nature showing that you, human beings, haven’t learnt how to coexist with the other life forms that you share with.”These are very wise words spoken by Mr. Mehta and echoed time and again by our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai, who recently expressed great concern over the retribution caused by humans’ killing karma. “Oh, you’ve seen the news that the black hole has made a noodle out of the star. (Yes, Master.) This is a real thing. (Wow.) Because this star has been doing evil deeds. So it’s a punishment. (Wow.) A black hole is hell. (Oh.) It’s a physical, visible hell. (Ooh.) (Yes, Master.) And anyone, any planet, any star, any celestial body, if it has done anything badly, and it accumulates too heavy, too long, then it will go there (Wow.) to receive the retribution.” In 2008, the Young Indian Vegetarian Society acknowledged Supreme Master Ching Hai's advocacy of vegetarianism all over the world and having a 24-hour TV channel promoting vegetarianism and compassion to animals. They awarded Her the Mahaveer Award with the inscription on the award reading: “Your compassion for all living beings is as deep as the Ocean. You have inspired people all over the world to become Vegetarian and Vegan. Your absolute and deep love for animals is a message to the human race to give up violence and become compassionate. Just as Lord Buddha showed the right path to the human race you are showing the right path so that our planet and future generations can survive in peace. We salute you.” Eleven years later in October 2019, Supreme Master Ching Hai made a donation of US$10,000 to The Young Indian Vegetarians in appreciation of all their noble endeavours. Mr. Mehta was very touched at the thought of being recognized for all the peaceful activism the society does for our world’s precious animals…

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 1 of 4

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 1 of 4

Kristie Middleton is the Vice President of Business Development at Rebellyous Foods, and former senior food policy director for the Shining World Benevolence Award recipient, Humane Society of the United States. Certified in Plant-Based Nutrition, she is also a nationally renowned speaker. “After starting to do some research into factory farming, that's when I learned that, despite what I thought when I was a little girl, the real problem with eggs was that we factory farm hundreds of millions of animals, confining egg-laying hens in what are called battery cages. These are cages where there are 6 to 8 birds confined in the space that's about the size of a standard desk drawer where they can't do any of their natural behaviors. I didn't know that to produce pork, we confined mother pigs in what are called gestation crates. They can't even turn around for the duration of their existence.” For several years, Kristie was the senior food policy director at the Humane Society of the United States. “There we worked with institutions like colleges, universities, hospitals, the military, essentially anyone that serves a lot of food, to help them identify opportunities to add more plant-based options to their menus.” Not only a working professional, Kristie is also the author of “Meatless: Transform the Way You Eat and Live ‒ One Meal at a Time.” “For example, if you want to become vegan, then maybe trying to designate a certain food that you typically enjoy and swapping out a plant-based option for that instead. Another thing is to actually articulate your goals. We’re 42% more likely to meet our goals if we share that with somebody, whether it's a friend or family, or we even write it down.” “We can make a tremendous impact on the world by going meat-free, even just one day a week. It would have the environmental savings of taking half a million cars off the road if everyone in the US went meat-free just one day a week. If we ate “meat-free” just one day a week, we will spare 1.4 billion animals from factory farms.”

John Oberg (vegan) – A Voice for the Voiceless, Part 1 of 2

14:49

John Oberg (vegan) – A Voice for the Voiceless, Part 1 of 2

Let’s start by hearing how changing to a vegan diet altered John’s perspective on animal cruelty. “The decision to stop eating animals and to become vegan was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I did it because I didn’t want to contribute to animal cruelty anymore. I’ve definitely felt like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders, and it’s been a beautiful thing. I feel like I can now live in confidence knowing that my actions from day to day aren’t causing unnecessary animal suffering, because if I’m not willing to cause harm to an animal, why should I pay someone else to cause harm to an animal?” “Most people consider themselves animal lovers, and most people go through their day, day to day, eating animals. And they go through their day, day to day, not thinking about the impact that that has. But what you, and me, and many of the viewers here today understand, is that through our food choices alone, we impact dozens, dozens of animals every single year. Hundreds, or probably thousands, potentially even tens of thousands over the course of our lifetime.” Next, John shares with us his approach to using social media as a successful tool to create awareness for the plight of our animal friends. “I look at the treatment that farm animals face in today’s world as something that is legal, or that is just absolutely cruel and unbelievable, but it’s legal and standard practice. There’s a lot of reasons for that, most of them surround money, and so what farm animals experience in 2020 in today’s world, is absolutely awful. The plus side is, the vast majority of people don’t know, so that gives us an opportunity to raise awareness and to talk about what farm animals are experiencing.” “Social media really provides us this incredible opportunity, whether it’s us as animal advocates, or other people fighting for other causes, social media allows us this great opportunity to spread the word, to raise awareness, to advocate in a way that humans had never been able to advocate before. In the history of humankind, we’ve never been able to send messages in an instant, to any corner of the globe in an absolute instant, in massive numbers day in and day out.”

Stewart Mitchell (vegan) - Love For All Sentient Beings, Part 1 of 2

Stewart Mitchell (vegan) - Love For All Sentient Beings, Part 1 of 2

“My name is Stewart Mitchell. I'm an activist and an author. I'm also a poet and an organizer with “V.O.I.C.E4Change.” I'm from Brooklyn, New York, born and raised. And I got into activism a little over four years ago because I went vegan in 2011 and I realized then that it wasn't enough for me to just be vegan, that I had to also advocate for animals as well, because there's still a lot of people that don't understand what happens to animals before they become food, before they become a fabric.” “‘Kayla the Vegan’ is basically a story of a young girl that moved from Brooklyn to Atlanta, with her family. And she enrolls in a new school. And during the lunch break, the kids are talking about what they're going to eat for lunch. And Kayla expresses that she doesn't eat meat or animals. Once she's asked by the other students what's her favorite meal, she tells them that she's vegan and the kids are kind of taken aback by it. They don't understand what that means or what it entails. So she explains to them she loves animals. She doesn't want to harm them. She doesn't want to eat them.” Mr. Mitchell’s other book Liberation Summer is based on his personal experience. The story describes the awakening of a young man named Jayden Young at the time he had been working at a restaurant during his college days. At first, he noticed that many chicken’s meats were delivered to the restaurant, so he became curious about where they came from. After some research, Jayden found out that the chickens came from a factory farm and lived a horrible life there. They were forcibly bred in dreadful conditions then slaughtered for humans to eat. Once awaken by this shocking truth Jayden realized that he wanted no part of this cruelty to animals. Furthermore, he began engaging in animal rights activism to help others learn the truth. “I want people to understand that you have the power to make a change in your community. That once you see that there is something wrong, whether it's health, economics, or whatever it is, you have the power to change that.”

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 3 of 4

12:05

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 3 of 4

"There are so many wonderful personal success stories that I've heard from people over the years. One of my favorite examples that I share in my book is that of Ken Chadwick. Ken was the Dining Services Director at American University in Washington D.C. when I met him. And he kept hearing from students that they wanted more vegetarian/vegan options on their menus. …And so, he quickly teamed up with his dietitian and his chef on campus to ensure that there was a delicious, totally vegan option for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts." "After eating a plant-based diet, he started losing weight very quickly, so quickly that his students called him 'The Incredible Shrinking Man.' He felt so much better though, he started exercising; he started running again, he took up boxing and he was able to stop taking all of his medications.""In my book, I share the story of one community that suffered the impacts of a local egg farm. And they lived there in relative peace and happiness for many years. And then, locally, an egg farmer bought the property down the street from their home. And this was not just any old egg farmer. It was an egg factory farm where they had hundreds of thousands of egg-laying hens confined in cages." "So, there they had hundreds of thousands of egg-laying hens producing tons of waste. And for Lita and her neighbors, sometimes the air was so putrid with ammonia fumes from the waste that they couldn't go outside. It caused their lungs to burn; it caused their eyes to burn. They would get dizzy; they would get nausea and stomach aches.""My neighbors right here next door have chickens. One was named Goldie and the other one was Red. And Goldie in particular just had this amazing personality. She would come over and eat some of the food on the ground that the other animals had knocked off of the feeder. And then she would go and take a nap, and roll around in the grass here in my yard, take dust baths or something that chickens do naturally in order to keep their feathers healthy." "And I think a lot of people don't realize that chickens are very intelligent, very sensitive animals, and they would be horrified if they knew the way that these animals are raised in order to produce their food."

John Oberg (vegan) – A Voice for the Voiceless, Part 2 of 2

Constantly analyzing your work and asking, is this as effective as I can be, given my current set of resources and all the variations, and all the variables at hand. And also, don’t feel like you have to fit some mold out there. And so, if you’re posting a lot of content that people really want to engage with, they are going to want to follow you.” A few years ago, Mr. Oberg decided to establish an account on Patreon, and he kindly shares with us how this has helped to achieve his goals in animal advocacy. “So, for me, I have about 200 patrons who believe that the work that I’m doing is important, and so they sign up and become patrons. And many of these patrons are just $5 a month, and it’s basically the price of a coffee once per month. And it creates a sustainable income for me, so that I can do this work, day in and day out, because if I didn’t have a way of supporting myself and supporting the work that I do, I wouldn’t be able to do this work.” “The way that we’re treating animals both literally treating them, but also looking at them as nothing more than commodities, is unsustainable and it’s unhealthy in every possible way. And we have pandemics now, and pandemics not only cause harm and suffering to people, but also the economies as well.” “The way that the world should change to balance crises and to deal with crises is to have more empathy. You choose not to support animal farming. You choose the plant-based options out there. You choose to go vegan, and that’s how you are going to change the world.” “I believe that doing so with a smile is going to get you further than screaming or yelling at people. So, for me, I really view social media as a massive way to impact people. Whatever the advocacy is, if it’s effective and if it speaks to you, then run with it.”

Lisa Gawthorne is a successful vegan athlete, entrepreneur and author. Lisa is the author of the vegan fitness and health book “Gone in 60 Minutes”. She has placed in the top ten in Duathlon World and European Championships in recent years. In addition, she is the co-owner and joint Managing Director of Bravura Foods, a leading vegan and vegetarian product distribution, marketing and sales company in the United Kingdom. In 2019, Lisa was named by The Grocer in their Plant-based Power List as one of the ten most prominent figures in the UK driving the plant-based market. Today, we are privileged to have Lisa here to share her perspective on how to maintain peak physical condition and stay competitive as a vegan athlete. “Well, I was vegetarian since age six. I am a huge animal lover. I absolutely adore animals, and that’s the heart of everything that I do in life. And so, it was always my intention to eventually move away from dairy.” “Duathlon has really been a great sport for me, because it’s enabled me to combine those loves of running and cycling, and also capitalize on a lot of weight training that I do, because I’ve got a gym.” “I am probably one of the biggest live wires that you’ll ever meet. I’m full of energy and full of passion, and I honestly put that down to the fact that my diet is so rich in phytonutrients that we get from all of our key vegan food sources. So, I would say that first of all, energy is a massive, massive, advantage that you will have over people that are on carnivorous diets.” Lisa also shared the effects of “The Game Changers” movie that she has observed. “When it went out on Netflix that first week, it was amazing! It was like a ton of unbelievable calls, emails, voice mails, WhatsApp messages, from people that I never would have thought would have gone either plant-based or vegan.”

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 2 of 4

Going Meatless with Kristie Middleton (vegan) - Transforming the Way You Eat and Live, Part 2 of 4

On today’s program, Kristie shares how she and her team successfully worked together with these institutions. "Our role in these programs was basically everything, except for preparing the food ourselves. So, we would conceptualize what the program could look like, we would provide the education behind why they should add such plant-based options to their menus.” "We're not requiring, or we're not requesting them to make tremendous changes to what they were doing, but just by swapping out one ingredient with another, they could offer a delicious plant-based option." "A lot of school districts and universities operate on what they call 'cycle menus' where they essentially repeat the same options over the course of a few weeks. So, we would create sample cycle menus, showing what they might be able to put on their menus to integrate a Meatless Monday or other plant-based options."Dozens of cities in the US, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, DC, are encouraging the plant-based lifestyle through resolutions for “Meatless Monday." " 'Meatless Monday' is now in over 30 countries around the world. I've met organizers from South Africa to Israel and Jamaica, as well as France, all of these people around the world who are trying to encourage people to eat 'meat-free' just one day a week." Kristie believes that “Meatless Monday” provides a good steppingstone and helps people shift towards the compassionate, noble vegan lifestyle. Supreme Master Ching Hai frequently speaks about the essential role of the media in promoting the noble, compassionate, Earth-saving vegan lifestyle, especially during this critical time for our planet. "The printed words are very powerful. So, the media is a useful tool to awaken one another at this crucial time, a time when our planet and the lives on it are in danger. That’s why I’m so glad to see many television and radio channels starting to broadcast about the urgent situation of our planet, and even the solution of the vegan diet. In fact, the most urgent role of the media right now is to become vegan themselves - compassionate, noble, and doing good deeds and to inform people of this urgent action. They should be an example, the media."

Rodolphe Landemaine (vegan) - A Baker & Pastry Chef Re-inventing France’s Traditional Baking Arts, p2 of 4

Rodolphe Landemaine (vegan) - A Baker & Pastry Chef Re-inventing France’s Traditional Baking Arts, p2 of 4

We were honored to feature the award-winning French chef Rodolphe Landemaine, who opened the 100% vegan bakery shop, Land & Monkeys, in the heart of Paris in February 2020. Chef Hermé is one of the most celebrated pastry chefs in the world. “Pierre Hermé was here three weeks ago to sample all the products. I was one of his students. He was very curious about my initiative, and asked me if he could come to the bakery for a taste-test. We tried all the pastries, and there wasn't one that he didn't like.” So, what is Chef Landemaine’s vision for Land & Monkeys? “We really wanted it to be something that brings together as many people as possible. We didn't want it to be divisive. We knew that 80% of the customers around our bakery are not vegan. So, the common denominator that we want them to come together around, was the element of gourmet.” “It was an intellectual challenge. It was also a technical and technological challenge. We worked for 2 - 3 years, with some professionals at my bakery doing just research and development around that.” One of the biggest hurdles Chef Landemaine had to overcome was the “pâte à choux.” Pâte à choux, or choux pastry, is a dough that is traditionally made with flour, water, butter, and eggs. To create the perfect vegan pâte à choux, Chef Landemaine and his wife set off on a quest to find the perfect egg white substitute. In 2017, they turned to food engineer Anne Cazor, founder of Scinnov R&D and Production Laboratory, for help. The result was Yumgo Blanc. In October 2019, Yumgo won the European Plant-Based Protein Award for start-ups in the food ingredient category. In 2018, the Landemaines joined hands with Anne Vincent, an international management consultant and marketing expert, to form a start-up called Tamago Food Company for the purpose of marketing Yumgo Blanc. In 2020, they followed Yumgo Blanc up with a vegan egg yolk called Yumgo Jaune.

Stewart Mitchell (vegan) - Love For All Sentient Beings, Part 2 of 2

Stewart Mitchell (vegan) - Love For All Sentient Beings, Part 2 of 2

"I'm a creative person, so I like to express myself creatively. I like to write books. I like to write poetry. I just recently started an organization called, 'V.O.I.C.E4Change,' which you can see on the t-shirt. And 'V.O.I.C.E4Change' is an idea and a concept that I came up with about a year ago, and I decided to actually act on it. And what 'V.O.I.C.E4Change' does is, we advocate for animals, but we do it through spoken word poetry, song, and dance." Mr. Mitchell recites his poem, “Sandwich and Shoes.” Mr. Mitchell also advocates for human rights and animal rights on his social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Let’s enjoy another poem he read in 2019 while attending the National Animal Rights Day in New York City, USA, entitled, “It does a body good.” "My plans for the future are to become more active, to be a better advocate, to learn more, to grow as an activist, and to spread the message of veganism, to spread the message of compassion so that more people will go vegan. More people will get involved in fighting for the rights of animals and more people will want to learn to love, appreciate, and respect animals, and do everything in their power to protect them as opposed to using them as commodities, as opposed to eating them, wearing them, using them for lab testing and things of that nature." "A very compassionate place where people aren't judged by the color of their skin, their ethnicity, their nationality that we treat animals with respect and protect them and just overall love and compassion. I think that we would have a better world if more people had compassion for what other people are going through and dealing with and try to get a better understanding of who we are and appreciate our uniqueness. We're all different. And I think that's the beautiful thing about life, is that we're not all the same, and that we're very unique. And we can learn from each other and learn to respect each other's beliefs without harming other beings, and not judge each other based on where we're from or who we are, but actually embrace each other because of that, and learn from each other and defend each other. That's the world I want to see."

Lisa Gawthorne – An Inspirational Vegan Athlete and Entrepreneur, Part 2 of 2

In this episode, we are honored to have Lisa here to share the secrets of her success as a vegan entrepreneur, starting from the vision for Bravura Foods. “Personally I was really annoyed by the fact that there was a lack, back in 2011, you can understand that - a real lack of vegan imported products. So, there wasn't a lot of the vegan snack products as seen around today in food and drink. We are visionists, “The Future is Vegan.” And we hold that very dear to our hearts and minds. Everything we do in the business is really tied to that very strong vision.” Lisa then expands on what she feels is the most important driving force needed in running a successful vegan business. “It’s very clear for me. One word says it all ‘PASSION.’ I honestly believe whether you’re running a business that turns over 10 pounds a week or 10,000 pounds a week, if you’ve got your passion at the heart of what you do, eventually you will succeed.” "And what we've done as a business, we’ve taken that as a very important kind of pole to hang everything from. We make sure that everything we do is either as good as, or in more cases than one, is better than what's out there. So, we tend to focus on delivering on quality and taste, so that they've got the believability that this product will work." “I always say, if anyone is watching this and thinking that they’re potentially vegan curious, my speech to them would be definitely go vegan, because it's been proven so many times. It's the best thing for your health, it’s the best thing for your mind, it’s the best thing for your body, your soul, the animals, the planet, your children, the future, the environment. It's a win-win situation constantly.”

Craig Goldblatt (vegan) – Leading a Life of Purpose, Part 3 of 3

Craig Goldblatt (vegan) – Leading a Life of Purpose, Part 3 of 3

Mr. Goldblatt is a radiant example of living life confidently, with purpose and an open heart in alignment with his values. In doing so, he continues to infuse a lot of positivity into the world through his charity Giving Africa, and in his work with other philanthropic groups. “I’m really fortunate to work for an amazing tree planting organization, called ‘Plant-for-the-Planet’ which is a global organization that is running a campaign called the ‘Trillion Tree Campaign’ that is working with the World Economic Forum to make a massive difference to make sure that environmentally we plant a trillion trees on this planet that we need. So I’m working with many different charities now that I’m so privileged to do. I’m working with an amazing homeless charity in London called Trinity Homeless. So my inspirational speaking is mainly around social enterprise and charities.” “So, my message is if we can just love ourselves, if everybody loves themselves and loves who we are and sees their beauty, we don’t have the problems that we have on this planet. It’s simple but it’s so true. It’s just look after yourself and love yourself that’s it.” These wise words echo the sentiment of Supreme Master Ching Hai, who elaborated on the importance of love at the World Premiere of “The Real Love: The Musical,” which is based on Her life story. “We have to be the source of inspiration, of nobility and love, especially if we have been shown how by others example. If we have love, all good will come our way. We can start to love now, today and continue tomorrow into the future. Love yourself, love your family, love your neighbors, love all around us. Without love in our heart we are almost nothing, just a burden to ourselves, to loved ones, and society. Love is not a word on our lips. Love must be our feeling inside and action translated outside. Love the animals – we be veg. Love the Earth – we go green. Love the World – save the planet!”
