Resistance Training: A Simple Workout to Strengthen Muscles, Part 1 of 2

Muscle mass starts to decline around the age of 30, at a rate of 3-5% per decade, and the elderly are at a greater risk for sarcopenia or muscle mass loss due to aging. Resistance training allows us to increase muscle mass, improve muscular strength and endurance, as well as boost our basal metabolic rate (BMR). Our BMR determines how many calories we burn when we are at rest. We must also be awar

Birding: Connecting Us with Nature, Part 2 of 2

To have a successful birding trip, it’s best to plan well. The first step is to pick the birds you’d like to see and find out where their habitats are. The best birding seasons are spring through fall, a period when most birds breed. The last thing to plan before your exploration begins is logistics. Using public transportation is a brilliant idea, as you can save fuel and parking costs and it red

The Protective Power of Masks, Part 2 of 2

In general, masks can be divided into two categories: reusable and disposable. Disposable masks include surgical masks as well as N95 and KN95 respirators. Please note that due to high demand and shortages, surgical and N95 masks should be reserved for healthcare workers and not be used by the general public. The cloth mask is one of the most common reusable masks. The United States Centers

The Dangers of Microplastics to Health, Part 2 of 2

Nowadays, the majority of clothing contains synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester. Clothes like T-shirts, dresses and jeans may use cotton that is blended with synthetic materials. These manmade fabrics are comprised of plastic fibers. Workers in the fabric manufacturing plant may inhale them. The dimensions of microfibers are an important factor for their toxicity. Finer fibers are easier

Plastics are made from a wide range of synthetic, semi-synthetic and naturally occurring compounds. Ditching Dairy Brings Better Health

Ditching Dairy Brings Better Health

Today, we are going to explore why dairy is scary and best to be avoided. Each milk type is naturally designed to meet the nutritional requirements needed for a baby’s optimal growth. Thus, it is plain to see that cow’s milk is not suited for human consumption. For example, it contains twice the protein of human milk and a unique amino acid called leucine that stimulates muscle protein synthesis. High amounts of leucine and protein in milk cause a calf to double its birth weight in around 40 days. Human breast milk has less protein, and a baby takes about 180 days to double its birth weight. A human baby needs less protein, but more fat, during the early stages of infancy when their energy is primarily focused on developing the brain, spinal cord and nerves, instead of muscle. Now let’s examine cow’s milk’s effects on grownups. Lactose is the main carbohydrate or sugar in milk, and a staggering number - 3 out of 4 adults - in the world are unable to break down the substance, a condition commonly known as lactose intolerance. People who are lactose intolerant will have indigestion upon consuming dairy products. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. We now turn to the logical solution, which is to ditch dairy. One of the most commonly asked questions is: How do we get our calcium if not from milk? Studies show that even though milk and dairy products seem to contain a certain level of calcium, people who consume high amounts of cow’s milk have a significantly higher mortality and bone fracture rate than those who drink little to no milk. In the US, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults each day is 1000 milligrams, the UK’s National Health Service advises a daily intake of 700 milligrams, and the World Health Organization recommends 500 milligrams of calcium per day. These amounts can easily be obtained through a vegan or animal-free diet.

Mind-Body-Chi – Dr. Wen B-Chen’s Marvelous Relaxation Exercises, Part 1 of 5 (Hsin-Chu, Formosa)

Chi gong is an ancient Chinese exercise that people practice to cultivate the chi – the vital life-force all around and within us. It utilizes meditation, controlled breathing, guided visualization and movements to stimulate the flow of chi throughout the body, thus assisting one in self-healing and preventing illnesses. Tai chi, a popular form of chi gong exercise, is now regarded as a health-promoting activity worldwide. This five-part series features our interview with Dr. Wen B-Chen, the creator of the marvelous Mind-Body-Chi (MBC) relaxation exercise program that incorporates the essence of chi gong, tai chi, yoga and meditation. He will present a unique interpretation of MBC’s various health benefits from a Western medical perspective and give demonstrations of the MBC exercises. Dr. Wen is a former radiation oncologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, USA. He was also the radiation oncology medical director at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida, USA. “For people at the age of 30 to 55, that’s my target. Some of them really don’t have time to do exercise to maintain their health. I put together these movements and breathing to help those people. As long as they carve out a certain portion of time for themselves during the day, then their health gets maintained.” “MBC stands for Mind, Body, Chi, and Chi is c-h-i. In our (Chinese) culture, chi represents air, or spirit, or breath, or vitalities. We were taught in our culture that chi exists everywhere, in the universe and in our bodies. Inside the body, chi is supposed to follow the blood, or even go with the blood and nurture our internal organs and extremities, joints, and muscles.” To cater to senior citizens, Dr. Wen has recently expanded the MBC program from the original 6 exercises to 10, with the sequence rearranged. In our series, we’ll cover all 10 exercises. Let’s now see Dr. Wen's demonstration of exercise #1 and #2 of the MBC program.

Protecting the Vulnerable During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will continue to examine other vulnerable groups at an elevated risk of exposure to COVID-19. Homeless people and those whose living conditions fall below basic standards, like informal settlements, are more susceptible to infections, while refugees and internally displaced people are probably the most at-risk. Fortunately, there are international agencies that provide services to these groups to help better minimize their possible exposure to COVID-19. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has scaled up projects to keep refugees and internally displaced people safe by providing life-saving support including clean water, medical care and personal protective equipment like masks. “You can see here there is a handwashing device which is not the usual one. We developed this one considering the response to COVID-19 so that there is less contact of hands with handwashing devices in the communal places.” Countries are also reaching out to support various humanitarian aid organizations. The government of Switzerland has donated US$1.8 million to the United Nations World Food Programme for food supplies for the Sahrawi refugees living in five camps near the Algerian town of Tindouf. About 20 young volunteers in Bolivia are participating in the “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign to help isolated seniors obtain vital resources. A joint report released in 2020, by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Livestock Research Institute states, “About 60 percent of human infections are estimated to have an animal origin.” Furthermore, it explains, “While wildlife are the most common source of emerging human disease, domesticated animals may be original sources, transmission pathways, or amplifiers of zoonotic disease.” Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has emphasized for many years that humans can stop zoonotic diseases by being vegan.

Protecting the Vulnerable During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Part 1 of 2

00:13:10

Protecting the Vulnerable During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Part 1 of 2

Worries and fears are in the hearts of everyone during this time of unease. This is especially the case for medically vulnerable populations who tend to carry these emotional burdens significantly more than healthy individuals. Older adults (those 70-plus years of age) and people who have underlying medical conditions such as a non-severe lung condition, heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, as well as those with a weakened immune system or are very obese are assumed to be at moderate risk for becoming seriously ill if infected by the coronavirus. Older adults with health conditions who are not leaving their homes at all right now may feel lonely, especially if their daily routine included regular interactions with family, friends or care providers. I'd like to share some simple ways you can help ease their concerns and raise their spirits during this time. Check in with them frequently by phone or even better, by video. National governments have posted public health protection measures and assistance information on their websites to help their citizens cope with this crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, a US government agency, provides practical advice to those with an underlying medical condition to follow during the pandemic. Here is an abbreviated list of recommendations for such persons from the CDC website. * Continue your medicines and do not change your treatment plan without talking to your doctor. * Have at least a 30-day supply of prescription and non-prescription medicines. * Do not delay getting emergency care for your underlying condition because of COVID-19. * Call your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your underlying medical conditions or if you get sick and think you may have COVID-19. As long as the number of infected people and death toll is increasing worldwide, we all have the responsibility to take necessary precautions such as social distancing, wearing masks and practicing personal hygiene. Our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai also reminds us of the importance of safeguarding ourselves from COVID-19. All of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s tips for protection during the COVID-19 (and any other) pandemic are free for viewing and download at MastersTipsOnCOVID-19.com

Full Vibrancy and Light: Lesa Carlson (vegan) on the Raw Vegan Lifestyle, Part 2 of 2

Full Vibrancy and Light: Lesa Carlson (vegan) on the Raw Vegan Lifestyle, Part 2 of 2

‟I saw Kirlian photography, and that showed the energetic properties around food. It's around all living beings which have energy. The premise that by adding heat, you either create nutrients or up the nutrients is a false idea. When you have something that is full of life force, light energy, it's auric field, its glow, you are consuming light, we are light beings, and the properties of mass and matter, there is no difference." By eating whole vegan foods in their natural state, Lesa says we can achieve a degree of spiritual upliftment. ‟So the quantum field, the biofield of energetics, is really, as opposed to the older idea of vitamins and minerals, and fat and how many calories and this kind of thing. When you move into that it's an energetic vibrancy property, and that it is vibrating at the speed of light. And your food is not separate from that whatsoever, and it is vibrating. So when you align that with your vibrating frequency, you are going into a whole new dimension. And again, you go from, the dense food to lighter food, to food that has more water content, that lightens up your mass and matter to then full vibrancy, that then you're expanded, and you're floating, and you feel fantastic and happy. Okay, so tips on making raw food dishes palatable and exciting for yourself. First of all, play, have fun. And so when you see or feel something that's bringing you joy, or sparks that little spark in your belly, what I did in the beginning that really helped me was I would find something that was cooked, that I was wanting for whatever reason, and then I would just redesign it into a raw food dish or find something that kind of gave me those same sensations. I would say bring color, bring texture, bring different flavors that you like. So, I always say, take the normal thing and then put some interesting things yourself, even in raw food."
