Vegan Cordyceps Militaris - The Long Life Heavenly Herbal Medicine

Cordyceps militaris is a very powerful medicinal mushroom, whose use goes back more than 5,000 years as part of the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In recent years, Cordyceps militaris has become increasingly popular worldwide, as studies continue to reveal more and more of its impressive health benefits. In nature, it grows on caterpillar larvae, but those who raise it for medical purposes may use a vegan media to ensure that it is animal-free. Through research, Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Quán of Âu Lạc, also known as Vietnam, has developed a plant-based media for growing Cordyceps militaris. "The Cordyceps militaris that we are making is vegan, and we gave it a new name: 'Long Life Heavenly Herbal Medicine.'” This extraordinary mushroom is called the 'miraculous cure' in Traditional Chinese Medicine as it can heal numerous health conditions. "Nowadays, medical science has confirmed that the vegan Cordyceps militaris can cure many cancers, pulmonary diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, etc. Cordyceps militaris’ reputation for protecting the lungs comes from its ability to promote the body’s better use of oxygen, decrease lung inflammation and eliminate phlegm. The vegan Cordyceps militaris has a phenomenal impact on lowering high blood pressure or raising the blood pressure of those who have low blood pressure. Thus, it helps the body maintain a healthy blood pressure level." The mushroom is best known for its ability to increase stamina and as an anti-fatigue supplement. With more oxygen in one’s system, it is easier to keep a steady pace all day long without 'crashing' and one can sleep soundly. Another impressive ability of the Cordyceps militaris is how efficiently it enhances the immune system's functions. Consumption of the mushroom may be helpful in building up one’s overall immunity as a protective measure against Covid-19 infection. Thank you, Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Quán, for your precious knowledge about the Cordyceps militaris and your dedication to producing this “Long Life Heavenly Herbal Medicine” so it is more accessible to everyone. We also thank Mother Earth for giving us so many fruits and herbs that nourish our body and support our health, making our life here more joyful and comfortable.

Confronting the Rising Prevalence of Food Allergies

15:16

Confronting the Rising Prevalence of Food Allergies

A food allergy is a condition where the immune system misidentifies certain proteins in food as a harmful substance, known as an allergen. Globally, the estimated number of people suffering from a food allergy has reached 250 million-plus. More than 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions. These are symptoms of a life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. Emerging evidence suggests that gut bacteria could play an influential role in whether we have food allergies. One type of bacterium that thrives in the digestive tract of those with a meat-heavy diet has been found to be associated with inflammation and bowel diseases. Not only does a meat diet change the gut environment, but also herbicides and pesticides used to cultivate crops can contribute to the imbalance of microbiota in the digestive systems of those who eat the produce. Another potential cause of food allergies is vitamin D deficiency. Research published in the Italian Journal of Pediatrics reports that around 2 to 6% of children suffer from cow’s milk protein allergy. Adults can also be allergic to milk and experience wheezing, vomiting, hives, and/or digestive issues. According to Dr. Neal Barnard, MD, founding president of the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine and a Shining World Compassion Award recipient, adopting a plant-based diet can be beneficial in dealing with food allergies. If our diet is composed of whole and minimally processed vegan foods, such as fruits, vegetables, oats, rice, nuts, etc., we do not have to worry that we are accidentally overlooking allergy-causing ingredients on a product label. Even though no treatments are currently available to cure food-allergic reactions, we can wisely choose the lifestyle that is best for our health. For example, there are plenty of delicious and nutritious substitutes for dairy milk, such as soy, almond and rice milk. Sufficient sunlight can boost our immune system to cope with some allergy problems related to insufficient vitamin D. In addition, having animal companions could be a way to help avoid allergies. A UK study involving more than 1,300 3-month-old babies found those with dogs in the household had a greatly lowered risk of a food allergy.

Appreciation of Art Improves Quality of Life, Part 1 of 2

Appreciation of Art Improves Quality of Life, Part 1 of 2

Art is the creative manifestation of the artist’s thoughts, emotions, intuitions, observations, and imagination. From painting to sculptures, architecture to design, music to dance and literature to digital media, art is a gift offered by artists to the world. Whether it’s starting our day with soothing music in the morning, enjoying the neighbor’s garden design on our way to work, or a fancy advertisement catching our attention on the bus, there are countless ways that art influences our lives. An inspiring movie can cheer us up, or a powerful song can resonate in our hearts and provide comfort during difficult times. Art helps us to appreciate cultural diversity and inspires self-reflection. Scientific studies have even found that the appreciation of art improves emotional resilience and promotes health, healing, and longevity. Many scientific studies have shown that bringing more art into people’s lives and surroundings can have positive effects on health, including even helping with patients’ physical, mental and emotional recovery. Engaging in creative activities can reduce stress and depression and help to alleviate symptoms of chronic diseases.Visiting art galleries and museums, and attending theater performances and concerts, can improve quality of life and reduce levels of anxiety and depression. A study conducted by the University of Westminster, UK, showed that after just 35 minutes spent in an art gallery during their lunch break, participants felt less stressed and had lower blood concentrations of cortisol, the stress hormone. Positive emotions, such as the awe experienced when we feel touched by the beauty of nature, art or spirituality, have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body. Dr. Mirgain explains: “Experiencing awe can give us a sense of hope and provide a feeling of fulfillment. It can create a desire to work toward the greater good and even help us maintain kindness towards others.”

Resistance Training: A Simple Workout to Strengthen Muscles, Part 1 of 2

Resistance Training: A Simple Workout to Strengthen Muscles, Part 1 of 2

Muscle mass starts to decline around the age of 30, at a rate of 3-5% per decade, and the elderly are at a greater risk for sarcopenia or muscle mass loss due to aging. Resistance training allows us to increase muscle mass, improve muscular strength and endurance, as well as boost our basal metabolic rate (BMR). Our BMR determines how many calories we burn when we are at rest. We must also be aware that when we fail to exercise our muscles, the cells tend to shrink or atrophy. Resistance training also contributes to better control of diabetes, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. A joint study by the Harvard School of Public Health in the USA and Denmark’s University of Southern Denmark established that men performing 150 minutes of resistance training weekly may be able to lower their risk of type 2 diabetes by about 34%. To benefit fully from a resistance training session, eating a vegan snack prior to and after a workout is recommended to give your body good fuel. Plant-based proteins are superior to those of animal sources as they offer abundant antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties; they are also much less acidic. Resistance training can be achieved through various types of equipment and routines such as free weights (dumbbells and barbells), weight machines, resistance tubes and the use of one’s own bodyweight. Here are some simple bodyweight exercises for absolute beginners: 1. Wall push-up: If you can’t do a standard push-up on the floor, start with a vertical one! This involves pushing against a wall while standing about 60 centimeters away from it. 2. Crunches: This is a classic and simple exercise to train the abdominal muscles. Nowadays, numerous workout apps can assist you in training. For example, Fitbod is an excellent app for beginners. Fitbod offers instructions for every exercise segment, videos for reference, a “heat map” to visualize the impact of your exercise - all the while recording your progress after each workout. JEFIT presents an interesting feature that allows you to share your training program with others as well! Always begin your session with a few warm-ups before launching into the resistance training routines.

Mindful Breathing and Meditation

Mindful Breathing and Meditation

As we move into the Golden Age, more and more people are interested in taking up the practice of meditation. If you have wondered why someone would spend a small part of their day sitting still with their eyes closed, then this is the show for you! Please be aware that although various meditation techniques will be discussed on this program, this does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation of any of them. Mindful meditation is one technique that some advocate to soothe the mind and regain a sense of peace and centeredness. A very basic form of mindful meditation is deep breathing. Greater Good in Action, a project in the US sponsored by the University of California- Berkeley and HopeLab, has published online a description of how to practice this particular method. A slightly more advanced, but still very simple, form of meditation that some practice every day is “Mindful Breathing.” The Buddhist Centre, a website created by the Triratna Buddhist Order, describes a four-step process for the Mindful Breathing practice. In a December 11, 2010 lecture in Cancún, Mexico, Supreme Master Ching Hai discussed the blessings that the air provides to us and the spiritual benefits of breathing. “And the air you breathe, just breathing it in, the air blesses you 15%. The trees bless you, even the plants bless you, the flowers in the garden bless you, the sand on the beach blesses you. Even the flies bless you. The bees — the bees... bzzzzz! — bless you. They don’t only work to help you to pollinate the fruit and the vegetables, they also give you their spiritual power.”“This breathing is very good for you. Even if you choose another method of meditation, you breathe. All the good information is in the air — you breathe in, you assimilate information.”“All, the whole universe, are blessing us. We are very lucky. Please, just be conscious. Try to be conscious and remember and feel it. Feel it. If you keep breathing the way they have taught you, and conscious of taking in the blessing and breathing out the blessing — I also tell people the same — and also less meat, after a few weeks you will feel like a different person.”

Aerobic Dance – A Fun Way to Get in Shape, Part 2 of 2

In this episode, we’ll talk about selecting appropriate workout gear and dance music as well as give some tips to help with forming an exercise habit. For aerobic dance,it's best to wear material that is stretchy, breathable, and moisture-wicking, such as lycra or spandex, or wear loose-fitting sweatpants and a t-shirt. Since aerobic dancing involves plenty of footwork such as twisting, sliding, jumping, and leaping for extended periods, wearing proper dance shoes is crucial. Combining aerobic dance workouts with a healthy vegan diet will further improve your fitness. A plant-based diet is usually high in carbohydrates, which is the major energy source for aerobic exercises. Music is an integral part of aerobic dancing, and for those exercising at home, choosing tracks based on enjoyment and rhythm help you build momentum to keep you going. Aerobic dancing is a great exercise that everyone can benefit from and enjoy.

Stopping Zoonotic Diseases: The Vegan Lifestyle Matters, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will talk about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and provide some tips from experts to help lessen the risk of infection. Like other coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 jumped from animals to humans. Some scientists theorize the pathogen started in bats, jumped to pangolins, and then to humans. The data and research findings from previous zoonotic disease epidemic and pandemic events and the current situation with COVID-19, clearly demonstrate that emergency action is needed and governments worldwide should now immediately ban all animal livestock raising and the sale of meat whether from domestic or wild animals to not only to protect global public health and save lives but also to show kindness and respect to our animal friends. Currently, the best way to protect yourself from getting infected by the novel coronavirus is to avoid being exposed to it. Regular hand washing is strongly recommended to help prevent infection. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (at least 60% concentration). To avoid crowds and large gatherings, skipping non-essential trips outside the home and avoiding close contact with others by foregoing greetings like handshakes and hugging. A surgical mask is designed to guard against splashes and droplets and also wall off the droplets from the wearer.

Guarding Health with Innovative Wearable Devices, Part 2 of 2

Wearable medical technologies have been transforming healthcare at an unprecedented pace in recent years. Smart glasses can be extremely valuable to healthcare professionals. Smart glasses can save physicians time for data access and recording. Based on the results from Dignity Health's Ventura Medical Clinic in California, USA, the implementation of Google Glass’ hands-free solution has improved human connection and the quality of care: direct patient care time has increased from 35% to 70% and daily EHR data input time has decreased from 33% to 9%. And smart glasses can play a key role in orthopedic surgeries. Pixee Medical, a France-based leading surgical navigation solution provider, has developed the cutting-edge Knee+ Augmented Reality navigation software for total knee replacement surgery - a very complex procedure. The first Knee+ assisted total knee replacement surgery was successfully performed in June 2020. For people with limited mobility, smart glasses can be supportive too. Munevo, a German startup helping people with disabilities by offering them independent mobility and self-determination, has developed the Munevo Drive system that allows users to control their wheelchair by delicate head movements and voice commands. A virtual reality (VR) headset is a smart device worn on the head that enables the user to experience a simulated 3D environment. Embodied Labs has assisted more than 100 institutional subscribers, including senior care providers, schools and government aging agencies, in making caregivers more effective, empathetic and motivated. The population of aging people is steadily increasing globally; thus the need for healthcare services to be continuous, holistic and proactive is on the rise. For example, Nuubo’s wireless wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) system uses adjustable silver textile-electrodes to perform 24/7 remote cardiological monitoring for patients treating their chronic heart condition at home. Powercast, a pioneer of wireless charging, and Liquid X, a manufacturer of metallic inks, have jointly developed a solution to simplify the production of smart textiles that withstand laundry washing.

B12, the Vitamin that All Vegans Need to Know

There is no harm in exceeding the recommended amounts or using more than one option. What happens if you do not get enough vitamin B12? A mild deficiency may cause no symptoms at first. If untreated, the typical deficiency symptoms in adults include loss of energy, tingling, numbness, reduced sensitivity to pain or pressure, blurred vision, abnormal gait, sore tongue, and mental problems like depression, memory loss, and personality changes. Signs of a B12 deficiency may take months or years to emerge, and they are usually reversible on the administration of B12. If you suspect you have a deficiency, you should get a diagnosis from a medical practitioner, because each of the named symptoms can also be caused by problems other than a B12 deficiency.

Protection from Internet Addiction

Through the Internet, we connect, work, undertake training, learn, recreate, reflect, mobilize, purchase items, do research, etc. We benefit from many conveniences such as taking classes, doing research, and shopping from wherever we are. In fact, we have come to rely so greatly on accomplishing tasks requiring Internet connectivity that a heavy dependence could unfold and result in Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). Internet addiction could jeopardize mental and physical health, causing a variety of symptoms such as: depression, anxiety, biological clock disruptions, dietary imbalance, insomnia or sleep disturbance, deteriorating eyesight, headaches, neck pain, backaches, or carpal tunnel syndrome. Various therapies may be suitable for treating Internet addiction; Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) is commonly used to guide the patient to handle life routines, emotional stress, negative thought patterns and compulsive behavior through different approaches. Positive changes are thus enabled one small step at a time. In addition to professional treatment, the caring support of family and friends plays an important part in the healing process. Internet addicts are encouraged to partake in social activities in order to improve their social skills. Daily exercise, yoga, reading, painting, or meditating can help regain balance, manage stress levels, improve mood and the overall outlook on life. The prevalence of and widespread access to the Internet make adolescents the demographic group with the highest rates of Internet addiction, especially game addiction. Early intervention remains the best and most important course of action to prevent children and teenagers from becoming addicted to Internet gaming.

Bringing H.O.P.E. - A Documentary on Our Food Choices, Part 2 of 2

Ms. Messinger and her team are dedicated to creating global awareness about the importance of choosing to eat a whole food, plant-based diet. This will improve our health and longevity, conserve natural resources, save biodiversity, reduce our ecological footprint, protect the lives of countless animals, and promote a more peaceful world. Many people have been able to recover from different kinds of cancer by switching to a plant-based diet. It makes sense that the Creator lovingly supplies us with everything we need to maintain our body. If we make wise food choices, we likely will have little need for prescription medicines.“Animal factories are the cruelest, most ‘injusticed’ prisons on Earth and should be abolished forever as soon as yesterday. ~ Supreme Master Ching Hai” “We’re growing plenty of food to feed everyone. The problem is we’re feeding most of that grain and the legumes, like soybeans, to animals while people are starving.”And that is the message of the film: we lead by example when we choose a plant-based diet when we show others this simple solution for a healthy life and a revitalized planet.“The highest form of living, the highest value, is compassion. And when there is compassion, we maximize well-being. After all, the word ‘wealth' comes from well-being. It did not mean money in the hands of a few; it meant well-being shared across life's spectrum.” “I think once we admit that we humans are not the only beings with personalities, minds, and feelings, once we realize that we are part of the animal kingdom, then it becomes quite as important how we treat animals – all animals – as how we treat each other. And so only when we show respect, and consideration and concern for other living beings, can we imagine a world that's more peaceful than the one today.”

Bringing H.O.P.E. - A Documentary on Our Food Choices, Part 1 of 2

We are honored to introduce to you excerpts from an award-winning and inspiring film called “H.O.P.E. What You Eat Matters” that reveals the truth about the severe impact an animal-based diet has on our health, the animals, and our planet. In 2006, Nina Messinger of Austria started giving talks and organizing seminars about nutrition and health. Her growing awareness of the terrible consequences of the animal-based Western diet prompted her to start working on a documentary called “HOPE FOR ALL” in 2012. She traveled to Europe, India and the US to interview leading environmentalists, scientists, doctors, and nutritionists, as well as people who had recovered from serious illnesses by changing their diet. After the film was released in Germany in 2016, Ms. Messinger spent a year working on an English version of the film that was renamed “H.O.P.E. What You Eat Matters.” H.O.P.E. stands for “Healing Of Planet Earth.”“And I think this idea needs to be conveyed to people, that there is a strong association between the Western diet – high in animal foods, processed foods, protein, fat and so forth – and diseases. People have to know that that really is true.”“Scientists know that cardiovascular disease starts with progressive damage to the endothelial cells. This is precisely where our diets come in. The excessive consumption of animal-based or processed foods damages our endothelial cells. Regular consumption of these products increasingly diminishes the protective nitric oxide supply in our blood vessels. This leads to inflammation and a hardening and narrowing of the blood vessels. These can have life-threatening consequences, like heart attack or stroke, or cause arteriosclerosis.” If we could stop eating meat, that would certainly be a big step in the right direction. However, what about drinking milk? T. Colin Campbell is a world-renowned nutritional scientist. In a series of experiments, he was able to prove that animal proteins – casein in particular – promote all stages of cancer growth. “Dairy really should be out.” “And dairy also has, and there’s good evidence for this, it has some allergenic properties.”

Acupuncturist Lisa K.Y. Wong (vegan): The Magic of Auricular Medicine, Part 1 of 3

Today, we feature the first portion of our interview with Lisa K.Y. Wong, a vegan licensed acupuncturist and Auricular Medicine specialist in California, USA. Ms. Wong will graciously guide us to better understand the ear and our body’s powerful self-healing system through the viewpoint of Auricular Medicine. “It is a complete, comprehensive medical modality, where we use the ear to do diagnosis and treatment of all the conditions in the body, up to 200 diseases, and 500 symptoms. Many of the symptoms that most people don’t even know about until much later. Ms. Wong is the founder of the Center for Healing by Design, a non-profit organization established in 2015 to help people get in touch with their doctor within. Lisa developed the Healing By Design Method, an easy 3-step process that uses the body’s built-in tools for self-healing and accelerating repair and recovery. The organization’s vision is to engage, educate and empower people worldwide with effective self-care skills to prevent and overcome health challenges in their lives. To convey her passion for spreading this easy and effective self-care method globally, Lisa scaled the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, in July 2015 for her initiative called “Climb Every Mountain Self-Care Movement.” The project’s vision is to help people prevent illness and disease at almost no cost, improve lives for people with and without access to medical care, empower people to heal themselves by using the body’s wisdom and ignite a transformation in healthcare treatment through the concept of self-care. The ear is a small, yet important, part of our body in promoting health. It’s not merely an organ for hearing, but also a sophisticated structure which can be used to treat diseases. Healing through ear manipulation has been employed for approximately 2,500 years. It is recorded in the Huang Di Nei Jing, or The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, an ancient Chinese medical text that has been regarded as the fundamental doctrinal source for Traditional Chinese Medicine. How miraculous that the body can really tell us all the conditions about, what of the body is going on, dealing with, and allows us to treat as well by manipulating the acupressure points in the ear, whether we do it with needles, or using just simply a finger. All the different ways to manipulate the ear, by giving massage, or heat, or all kinds of ways to get the body to change the energy in the body.

Pharmacist Huang Shu-Fu on Taking Medicine Wisely, Part 2 of 2

We talked about the possible toxicity of all kinds of medicine. It is the dosage that makes a substance either medicine or poison to our bodies. This concept applies not only to Western medications but also to Chinese herbal medicines. People seeking medical treatment may be diagnosed by a Western medical doctor and a TCM practitioner during the same visit. It is also possible to get a co-prescription for both conventional drugs and herbal medicines. It is especially important in such cases for patients to understand and strictly follow the instructions of the medical professionals. These patients need to take the remedies in the correct order, dosage, and time to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Cholesterol: Friend or Foe?

With all the publicity about the detrimental health effects of cholesterol, people are often surprised to learn that cholesterol is actually important for keeping the body functioning normally. Some may be under the impression that all of the cholesterol in our system comes from the food we eat. In fact, our body is also capable of knowing when to produce the right type of cholesterol to keep the body in a balanced state. So cholesterol isn’t all bad, nor is it all good when there’s too much of the wrong type. Fiber is a key tool to lower cholesterol and is only found in plant-based foods. A vegan diet rich in fiber is beneficial and effective in helping us to keep cholesterol in the normal range.

In today’s program, we will discuss the wisdom of living a quiet and humble life, ways to lead such a lifestyle and highlight the untold benefits simplicity brings us. We’re brainwashed by society into believing that an abundance of material things will give us long-lasting happiness and peace of mind. However, the sages and wise persons of the past and present have shared with our world a much different perspective. Albert Einstein, often regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century, perceptively wrote: “ A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”

Pesticide Impact – A Silent Menace

13:55

Pesticide Impact – A Silent Menace

Pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides and bactericides, are chemical or biological agents that are used in many agricultural and industrial sectors to control pests, weeds and diseases. According to the Pesticide Action Network UK, “There is a growing body of evidence that pesticides can become more harmful when combined, even when each individual chemical appears at levels at or below its ‘no-observed- effect-concentration.’” By 2017, the global agricultural use of pesticides had grown to 4.1 million metric tons per year, a nearly 81% increase from 1990. According to research, pesticides are responsible for over three million poisoning cases annually and an estimated 220,000 deaths. Due to their persistent nature and bioaccumulation properties, pesticides are harder to degrade in the environment. OCPs have strong lipophilicity. Therefore, when the toxic OCPs are ingested, they might partition into fat tissues and be stored inside. This is not only limited to humans, but also it affects other living beings in the same way. Eventually, the detrimental effect of biomagnification is at its greatest when it ends up in the stomachs of meat-eaters. If the amount of OCPs released into the blood circulation increases, there might be a higher risk of dementia. As a result, the amount of OCPs that end up in the brain might be less in those making a healthy lifestyle change. What can we do in communities to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of pesticides? One way is by implementing sustainable-oriented agroecology and vegan organic farming practices. The available methods, to name a few, include crop rotation and usage of cover crops, which encourage good soil health.
