Hula Dance, the Spirit of Hawaii, Part 1 of 2

Hula Dance, the Spirit of Hawaii, Part 1 of 2

The hula dance is an integral part of Hawaiian culture, and dates back 1,500 years ago, when the ancient Polynesians voyaged to Hawaii. In ancient Hawaii, there were different dances for various occasions. One of the rules in Hula dancing is “Kuhi no ka lima, hele no ka maka” or “Where the hands move, there let the eyes follow.” In other words, a dancer should always watch their hands at all times, rather than looking at the audience. In Hawaiian Hula dance, each movement, expression, and gesture is deliberate, with a specific meaning. “A hula dancer is a storyteller, you’re telling the story. So, if you’re talking about ‘This is my song.’ So of course you’re gonna be, your hands to your mouth and out, and because you want to give to your audience.” According to Hawaiian legend, the goddess of Hula is Laka, who is also the goddess of the forest, and watches over all vegetation. It’s believed that Goddess Laka provides inspiration for Hula dancers, and so many dancers today still pray to her for successful performances. With soothing music, and body movements connecting natural vibrations and energy, Hula is not only spiritual but also therapeutic.

Spiritual Influence on Japanese Architecture and Garden Designs

00:18:45

Spiritual Influence on Japanese Architecture and Garden Designs

The traditional architecture of a country reflects its unique culture, and even spiritual attainment to a certain degree. As early as the Yayoi period (300 BC - 300 AD), the ancient Japanese constructed storage houses called Kura, as Buddhism grew in popularity, Kura evolved into large - scale Buddhist temples. One of the most unique features of Japanese architecture is Gassho - Zukuri, a roof resembling Buddhist praying hands pointed to the sky. Japanese architecture is strongly influenced by Zen ideology and there is great emphasis on integrating nature into building designs. Influenced by Zen Buddhist teachings of peace and simplicity, the Japanese people love their living space clean, uncluttered, and in order.

The Tradition of Respecting the Elderly, Part 1 of 2

00:15:40

The Tradition of Respecting the Elderly, Part 1 of 2

In this 2-part program, we celebrate the cultural traditions of respecting elders around the world across various religions. In Asian societies, honoring elders is one of the fundamental principles. For example, in the Chinese culture, there is a saying, “among hundreds of moral behaviors, the virtue of being filial comes first” The long tradition of Filial Virtue or Filial Piety is considered the highest virtue in Chinese culture. It is more than just respect, and also includes love, care for, support, and devotion to the elderly. Honoring the elders extends to older siblings, family members, teachers, and citizens of high position in the Chinese culture. This moral principle contributes to establishing a peaceful society. In Âu Lạc, also known as Vietnam, there are usually many generations living together in one household. This allows all the generations to support and care for one another. In almost all the cultures of the Orient, there is a common reverence for elders for their wisdom, lifelong hard work, and all the sacrifices for family.

Latin American Dance

00:14:06

Latin American Dance

Latin America is a place with many culturally enriched dances. Stemming from Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, Latin American dances infuse cultural flavour with technical skill to bring exciting performances to audiences worldwide. Modern Latin American dance consists of a wide variety of styles that were formed in separate cities and countries. Some of the dances have been standardised with internationally agreed techniques, rhythms and tempos. The dances generally fall into two categories - the International and American Style. The International Latin Style dances are often performed competitively due to its highly disciplined and technical traits. The dance styles in this category include the Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive. The Cha Cha, originally known as Cha Cha Cha, is one of the staples of international Latin dance competitions. The dance is characterized by three quick steps forward and two slower steps backwards - “one, two, cha-cha-cha, three, four, cha-cha-cha.” While maintaining minimal upper-torso movement, dancers sway their hips and straighten their knees on half beats. The slowest of the Latin dances is the Rumba. Considered to be the most romantic of the Latin dances, the Rumba emphasizes movement of the body rather than the feet and is full of emotion and interaction between partners. Each dancer tries to entice the other with side-to-side hip movements and twisted steps. Danced to a basic pattern of two quick side steps and a slow forward step, the Rumba is adaptable to many musical forms that accommodate a quick-quick-slow rhythm. In Brazil, Samba is a popular Latin dance at street festivals and celebrations like the Brazilian Carnival. Set to music with African rhythms, this joyful and lively dance is characterized by rapidly moving hips and quick transfers of weight. Although it is usually performed solo in the Brazilian culture, ballroom versions have been developed where partners dance with bounce and hip rolling motions. The fastest of the Latin dances is the Jive. This happy and extremely energetic dance incorporates plenty of knee-lifting, bending, kicking, flicking and rocking of the hips. Latin American dances are taught in academies all around the world. Through dancing, people of different ages and backgrounds can stay physically fit while building new friendships. Consistent dance practice brings numerous health and social benefits.

Reflective Korean Buddhist Melodies

Buddhism has been a part of Korean culture for over 2,000 years and its deep influence is evident in Korea’s magnificent temples, paintings, literature, statues of great Buddha and Bodhisattvas, and non-violent vegan temple food. In addition, Buddhism has enriched the songs and instrumental music of Korea. Buddhist prayer chants have long been played as offerings at traditional sacred ceremonies. Buddha’s enlightened teachings such as detachment, letting go and compassion have also inspired many modern-day musicians. On today’s program, we’re excited to present three contemporary Buddhist songs. The first is “When the Wind Comes”. Our next pieces are “ An Amazing Lotus Flower”, “The Waiting Heart”.
