Cleaner Wrasses: The Dentists of The Sea

Cleaner Wrasses: The Dentists of The Sea

As you learn about our species, you will be amazed by the job we do. We work just like a beauty salon in the human world. I forgot to tell you that I have a big family, including four unique cousins: the Black Spot, the Hawaiian, the bicolor, and the red lip. All my cousins live mostly in the tropical Pacific Ocean. My kind, the bluestreak, is the most well-known cleaner wrasse of them all. We love to be around coral-rich areas so we can operate our “cleaning stations” better. People describe us as “slender fish with pointed snouts.” The smallest cousin of mine is the red lip wrasse who is about 9 centimeters in length, and the biggest one in the family is the bicolor wrasse. They potentially reach up to 15 centimeters. We all have “tweezer-like” teeth, which help us do our cleaning job easily, so our clients will no longer suffer from parasites and absolutely enjoy quality lives. Compared to other marine friends, we are very colorful. Black spots are quite attractive cousins of mine. Before settling down to work, they love to perform a fascinating dance for the clients to relax, so they can do their jobs better. We bluestreak and our Hawaiian cousins have similar lifestyles. We all like to do business with big clients. If ready for the service, the customer will become stationary, stretch out their fins and open their gill covers. Hawaiian wrasses can enter inside the mouth and gill chambers of the large fish to clean. Unlike other varieties of cleaner wrasse, they do not burrow into the sand at night. They rest in a “balloon-like cocoon” that they build using mucus layers. Do you know what is remarkable about bicolor wrasses and us, the bluestreak cleaner wrasses? The strongest female can turn into a male when the only male in the group dies so that babies can keep being produced. Fish don’t have good tools to clean themselves with, and we have a very loving personality, so we decided to help out. We work four hours a day, seeing more than 2,000 clients!

World Day for Farmed Animals: The Life All Animals Wish For, Part 1 of 2

World Day for Farmed Animals: The Life All Animals Wish For, Part 1 of 2

Today, October 2nd is World Day for Farmed Animals. On this day, attention is drawn to the abuse and mass exploitation of animals for food and other uses. It is estimated that more than 70 billion cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and other innocent animals are raised and slaughtered each year. Let’s hope this annual day of remembrance serves as a wake-up call for humanity to understand the suffering of these animals and help to put an end to this barbaric industry. These animals are all needlessly forced to endure tremendous pain, torment and death just to provide meat, eggs and dairy foods for humans, food that makes them sick and makes us suffer. Animal factories are large industrial operations where humans breed, raise and kill large numbers of animals to turn into food just to please their palates. Most of these animals never see the sun or the sky, or feel the grass beneath their feet. They are kept prisoners for their entire lives, even though they have done nothing wrong. The entire purpose of the animal livestock industry is to turn animals into food as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible, in order to maximize profits. Animals are treated simply as a commodity, like manufactured goods, while we endure unbearable agony and misery. There are so many issues with these inhumane industries. Humans are not only taking the precious lives of animals, but also harming themselves, their countries and the planet. That road leads to self-destruction! Yes, one of the many problems created by the animal factories, meat consumption, or both, is zoonotic diseases that have killed many, like the Spanish Flu, AIDS, Ebola, Avian Influenza, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Mad Cow Disease, and even COVID-19. There will be more pandemics if humans don’t stop eating animals. Another risk to society from animal factories is antibiotic resistant infections.

Four Seasons, Part 2: Lively Serenades of Summer Nights

16:35

Four Seasons, Part 2: Lively Serenades of Summer Nights

Welcome to “Four Seasons, Part 2 of 4: Lively Serenades on Summer Nights.” Our band of frogs take charge of the opening act. Our song serves as the Overture for the nocturnal symphony. When we start singing, we breathe in and then close our nostrils and mouths; the airflow in our lungs triggers our vocal sacs which expand and amplify our notes. Our neighbors seem to think that we are equipped with built-in loudspeakers! We must belt out our distinctive songs since the females will distinguish and only answer the call of males of their own species. The ladies have a preference for the loudest-singing males, so we tenors, baritones and basses must sing quite a powerful tune to attract their attention! The toads, our not-so-distant cousin residing on dry land, also have a part in the romantic nocturnal opera. So, if you hear their characteristic croaking sounds emanating from the land, you will have met our jazzy cousins rehearsing their serenade – just like we frogs do, except we perform ours on water. In this musical hall, frogs and toads are the opening act preparing the stage for the nights’ headline act! Yes, the divas will soon take the stage, and when the majestic owls soar into the spotlight, their hoots will indeed complete the symphony with music and mystery. Owls are mostly nocturnal animals and each impart a distinctive repertoire throughout the night. An owl will generate unique hoot to express specific intentions, such as to claim a territory, or to attract or communicate with a mate. A bonded pair of owls will often engage in a romantic duet, particularly during given phases of the moon. Another staple of summer is the loud yet comforting and seemingly unceasing chirps of crickets! In fact, the higher the temperature, the faster they chirp, and their volume can reach over 100 decibels! Male crickets produce their tunes by raising their wings to a 45-degree angle and rubbing the sharp edge of one wing - the scraper - against the file-like wrinkles on the other wing. Each species sings their own repertoire, and the harmony of their high-pitched thrills and low-pitched hums produces quite an orchestral on these enchanting summer nights!

The Cutest Animal in the World: The Himalayan Red Panda

The Cutest Animal in the World: The Himalayan Red Panda

Our family, the Himalayan red panda, can be found in parts of Nepal, Bhutan, northern India, northern Myanmar, Tibet, and the western Yunnan Province of China. I have a beautiful red color to my fur and my species only grows to the size of a very large domestic cat. We were named pandas almost 50 years before our better known, giant black and white panda cousins were. Did you know that we are mostly active at night, and look for food at dawn and dusk? I guess you can call us night owls. We can run down trees head first too, as those thumbs of ours are really handy! We can live up to 10 or even 15 years of age, and are also known by other names such as the “lesser panda” and the “red bear-cat,” but being called the red panda is my favorite as my red fur is totally unique! We red pandas love climbing, and we aren’t afraid of heights. Bamboo is our main food source. When we wake up from our lovely naps, we also groom ourselves like cats do, by licking our paws and then combing our fur. We like to look good at all times…Sadly, my beautiful family of gentle and loving red pandas is also hunted for our fur. Moumita Chakraborty, a researcher of red pandas at EDGE, a conservation program hosted at international conservation charity ZSL (Zoological Society of London), said that red pandas are illegally hunted in some countries for their highly valued bushy tail, which is used to produce hats. Isn’t that just terrible? Moumita Chakraborty also said, “Due to the fragmentation of their natural habitat, small numbers, and niche food requirements, their number border on the brink of extinction.” Fortunately, we still have some protected habitats, including 49 in China, 11 in India, 10 in Nepal, 3 in Myanmar, 8 in Bhutan, and the six biological corridors in Bhutan. You can help save us by “adopting a red panda” with World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a non-profit organization and a Shining World Compassion Award recipient. You can also help to secure our forests that are outside the protected areas as these are important habitats for us too.

Bats - Our Invisible Friends with Kristin Tieche (vegetarian), Part 2 of 2

15:04

Bats - Our Invisible Friends with Kristin Tieche (vegetarian), Part 2 of 2

In part 1 Ms. Tieche shared with us that her purpose in making “The Invisible Mammal” was to increase awareness of the threats we are facing and to show how important bats are to humans and ecosystems. In today’s program, we’ll uncover more of the devastating diseases that bats have been suffering from and what humans can do to help save us. "When they get white-nose syndrome, this is a fungus that attacks bats during hibernation, when they're in the state of torpor. And then the bats will wake up more often during hibernation and burn up all of their energy reserves. Then they lose their fat reserves before the end of hibernation, so they end up perishing." Kristin tells us where most scientists believe this fatal disease affecting us came from. “It most likely was tracked to North America by humans. They believe that a tourist must have tracked in the fungus and introduced this new fungus to North American bats.”What can humans do to help prevent bats from contracting this awful disease? Kristin suggests a few solutions. "The solutions are basically decontamination and then finding a non-invasive way to help bats survive the hibernation period. People who want to enter these habitats will have to decontaminate their shoes and any surfaces that might touch the walls of the cave or the hibernacula." By deepening your understanding of the relationship between bats and the ecosystem, Kristin hopes that you will be able to see the positive impact we have on human lives and the planet altogether. "There are some studies that show that we've lost 70% of our biodiversity. And we definitely depend on all of the species to make our entire ecosystem work. So, when we lose one species, there's a whole chain effect, a domino effect, that happens, because there's all these species that depend on that one species. We have to protect all of them. This is a really important piece to understand that the biodiversity of our world, and climate change, it's all connected. And there are so many ways that we can have a lighter footprint on our planet and being a vegetarian is one of them."

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 1 of 2

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 1 of 2

Many humans already know that the Honorable Mayor Fasi of Honolulu declared the 25th of October as the “Day of Supreme Master Ching Hai” on behalf of the United States Government in 1993. So, today I am honored to share what Supreme Master Ching Hai day represents to us animals. Our beloved Master has mentioned on many occasions how intuitive animals are. I would like to share some words that my wise friend Lumino, the Eastern Rosella, shared with animal communicator Simonne Lee. If Lumino looks familiar to you, that’s because he was featured in Supreme Master Ching Hai’s bestselling book the Birds in My Life. “(Not just him, a lot of time with them, communicating with them. It's like She sings and they're drawn to the vibration of Her voice. It's very clear, what She radiates, because I've felt it from their end, how they are feeling it towards Her. It's amazing. He loves it.)” “So, the animals, in the wild even, they meditate all the time. I just remind them or probably remind myself of God, so at night before they sleep or whenever we’re together sometime, I sing to them at night, to sleep like, “Remember God, you are divine, you’re beautiful,” something like that.” We animals also love Supreme Master Ching Hai because to us She is “love in action.” Lumino also described this to Simonne. “’We are here to evolve the world, to lift it. And the more people that are aware of this, the bigger the possibility of it.’ (She (Supreme Master Ching Hai) lifts it and lifts it and lifts it further.)” On one occasion when our esteemed Master was asked about Her mission here on Earth, this is what She stated… “My real mission? Just to uplift the world’s whole consciousness.” Supreme Master Ching Hai continues to uplift the world through Her diligent, intensive meditation. I think it’s largely because of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s vast efforts that people are forging deeper relationships with us animals. There was once a goat who came to Master for help. “She worried that the so-called owner will eat her calves. Because she knew that I could intervene and save her children and her family. So I said to him that the goat thanks him. So I say thank you for promising to keep her family alive, and that’s what it is.”

Celebrating Christmas and New Year with Our Animal-People Companions, Part 2 of 2

Celebrating Christmas and New Year with Our Animal-People Companions, Part 2 of 2

Christmas could be a very convenient time to adopt a new animal friend into the family, because while people are on holiday from work, there is time to bond and get to know each other. If you do choose to gift a new loving home to one special animal-person and the opportunity to provide for him or her an appropriate human caregiver, I strongly encourage you to support animal-people shelters by rescuing an animal-person instead of “buying” one from a “pet store.” At the Humane Society, staff encourage people to give gift vouchers instead of buying an animal-person as a gift. That way the person receiving the gift can go through the adoption process themselves if and when the time is right for them. Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke of the value of adopting new family members and the responsibilities which come with being a new parent of a rescued being in Florida in 2001. “The pounds are full of abandoned pets. Many of my dog-people or bird-people are from the rescues. If some dog-people or cat-people are not adopted after a certain time, maybe one day even, or one week, or two weeks, they kill them. So in case you want to go there sometimes, or you see a dog-person is pitiful, you want to adopt, then you have to make it a commitment for 20 years. But until their last breath, they will be loyal to you.” It’s important to create a safe space so that they don’t panic and run out of the house and get lost. Animal-people communicators and care professionals use the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to help their patients overcome fears, including the fear of fireworks. This involves tapping on acupressure points that are associated with certain meridians. I know that countless people from the animal kingdom will appreciate you taking the time to act on their behalf by requesting the use of silent fireworks. As Christmas and New Year gets closer, you could tell us why you are getting excited and let us know what to expect. Many of us love to have some advanced notice about upcoming changes that will be happening around the house. And, in all honesty, we just love to feel included.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Loving Animal-People

15:18

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Loving Animal-People

It is the Land of the Heart, and in Islam the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, always resides there, along with numerous loving animal-people companions of all shapes and sizes. And in the wise teachings of the Holy Qurʾān, animal-people are no different from humans: “There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our Decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.” ~ Holy Qur’an 6:38During the Hijrah, the True One (Peace Be Upon Him) and His devout follower Abū Bakr AS-SSiddiq fled Mecca for Medina in the night to avoid the assassins who were hunting them. At one point they took refuge in a cave, but soon afterwards their pursuers found the cave. The assassins did not enter the cave to look for them, however, for in the short time since the Beloved (Peace Be Upon Him) and Abū Bakr AS-SSiddiq had entered the cave, a spider-person had spun a silvery web across the opening of the cave, and a pair of dove-persons had nested at the entrance. Together they made it appear that no one had entered the cave for a long time, thus protecting the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, from the sharp iron swords of the assassins. The Beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was credited with taking care of a cat-person companion Himself. According to Hadīth, the cat-person companion of the Beloved (Peace Be Upon Him), was called Muezza, and he was known to rest on the lap of the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, when He gave lectures. Not only is His love for animal-people clear in the Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) actions, but the Hadīth also warns of the punishments that await those who are cruel to people from the animal kingdom. From these stories we can see that in the Land of the Heart, even a seemingly small action, like that of the spider-person weaving his web of protection and the dove-persons nesting at the entrance to help the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) hide, or quenching the thirst of a dog-person, can have profound ramifications, so it’s important to make the most of every opportunity, however small, to show kindness towards Allah’s creations.

The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed

14:59

The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed

Welcome to our show titled “The Spiritual Nature of Animals Revealed.” Life can be full of ups and downs. Many people seek comfort and peace in spirituality by praying, meditating, doing yoga, or attending services at a house of worship. Have you ever wondered if animals also practice spiritually? There are many clips showing animals seemingly praying to God or Buddha. A pig in Qiaotou, a small town in southeastern China, was seen worshipping the Buddha in front of a temple. The pig kneeled on the ground for a long while and didn’t wish to leave. It wasn’t until the monks came out from the temple to recite sutras that the pig left. “Animals also have souls and they understand everything. They can also practice. They might not be, maybe, a saintly person who goes out preaching and things like that, but they can practice to liberate themselves out of the Three Worlds, or at least they come to the Third Level. Even the wild birds and animals outside, many of them are high level.” Jixiang was sadly abandoned and became a stray dog. Fortunately, a kind old lady found him and brought him to the Dajue Temple in Hsinchu, Taiwan, also known as Formosa. When coming to the temple, the old lady said to him, “Here you must listen to monks’ words and practice vegetarianism!” He was then named Jixiang, which means auspicious in Chinese. Since being adopted by the temple, he eats only vegetarian food and attends the prayer rituals with the monks both day and night. In southern Japan, a black-and-white chihuahua named Conan prays. Every day, Conan joins the Reverend Chief Priest Joei Yoshikuni in conducting the daily services at the Shuri Kannondo temple in Naha, the capital of Japan’s Okinawa prefecture. “Do all animals know God?” “They know God more than we do, unfortunately. They know nothing but God, they rely on nothing but God, they love nothing more than God. They communicate with none but God, I mean inner, higher, deeper communication but with God.” We animals do have a spiritual nature and are quietly practicing throughout our world. I hope the stories in our show will inspire everyone to pursue spiritual practice and endeavor to find God within.

A Joyful Celebration of World Animal Day!

14:52

A Joyful Celebration of World Animal Day!

Today, the 4th of October, is World Animal Day, when humans pay their highest tribute and respect to all the animals who share our wondrous planet with us. This annual celebration is held on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi – Patron Saint of the Animals, a dedicated animal lover and vegetarian. Also, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a Shining World Compassion Award recipient, and Greenpeace, organized an online petition urging governments to ban all forms of hunting, issuing a statement saying: “There can never be a sport, tourism, hobby, or an auction on killing another living being.” On July 9, 2021, an animal protection law was passed by the Turkish Parliament, recognizing animals as living beings and criminalizing many types of violence against them, punishable by a prison sentence. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present His Excellency Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Turkey as well as the Turkish Parliament, each with the Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion, with high respect and heartfelt gratitude for your noble efforts to protect precious animal lives.” In another piece of inspiring news for animals, His Holiness the Dalai Lama encouraged all his people to adopt a vegetarian diet and to stop exploiting animals. For many decades our Most Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai has dedicated immeasurable love and effort to saving sentient beings from suffering by all means possible. She urges everyone to pray with Her daily for a vegan world and for world peace to soon manifest. “We have to protect lives by continuously promoting vegan and sustaining peace through this benevolent process and way of life. This can be done if we are convinced vegan, for the reason of compassion, sustainable peace, sustainable planet, sustainable world, through harmonious lifestyle. Help the planet. Rescue the animals. Save our world. Be a hero. Use all your power within, from your faith; from your Master, from your God. Use all this to call upon a change. Call upon for a change, call upon all this power for a change in our world, to make it a Vegan World.”

Amazing Animal-People: Real-Life Heroes

Amazing Animal-People: Real-Life Heroes

Animal-people mothers, just like their human counterparts, will do anything to safeguard their young. There was a mother dog-person from a town near Buenos Aires, Argentina, who in cold weather discovered a newborn human baby in a field, surrounded by wooden boxes and rubbish. After a police investigation, it was understood that the mother dog-person had dragged the human baby 50 meters from where the baby had originally been abandoned to the place where she was raising her babies. If it weren’t for such a heroic action, the human baby would likely have frozen to death. The mother dog-person and her family became national celebrities in Argentina and were given a cozy new home. Let’s bring you to Ottawa, Canada, where Haley Moore was walking her dog-person companion, Clover, when she collapsed onto the snowy sidewalk following a seizure. Clover’s heroic actions were captured on a neighbor’s security camera, first showing Clover checking on her fallen human caregiver, then courageously positioning herself in the path of oncoming traffic to call for attention. Fortunately, a truck driver spotted Clover, stopped and quickly sought help from a neighbor, who called paramedics. For Clover’s brave acts, Supreme Master Ching Hai gladly presented her with the Shining World Hero Award, plus US$2,000 for vegan treats. Another heart-warming story to share with you is about two inseparable husky brothers from China. The elder brother Da Bao was born blind, and his younger brother Ju Bao has been his eyes and guiding star from the very beginning. Ju Bao has been compassionately caring for his brother and done everything possible for Da Bao to lead a normal, happy life. Well, the video went viral as the special bond these two brothers shared melted the hearts of millions of people with such a fine example of love, loyalty, and devotion! In a touching story from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, a dolphin-person spotted a large Oceanic whitetip shark-person approaching professional dive instructor Kayleigh Grant and a fellow diver. The dolphin-person swam around the pair while vocalizing to ensure their safety. “What a beautiful soul. I wish we all cared as much as this sweet dolphin.”

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 2 of 2

16:30

The Animals’ Joyful Tribute to Supreme Master Ching Hai Day, Part 2 of 2

“The reason I wish everyone and the world and the universe a good Ching Hai Day, is because it’s a good thing. It’s everyone’s day. ‘Ching Hai’ is actually not just my name. It’s a name given, and it symbolizes the Pure Ocean of Love. That is in your heart, in everyone’s heart, in all beings’ hearts.” Her books The Birds in My Life, The Dogs in My Life and The Noble Wilds have illuminated how important us animals are to the planet and to our human co-inhabitants. At Lake Amoura, Master made special friends with swans named Pitu and Sai. “Poor Sai cannot fly, because you plucked them to lay the nest, right? You are a good father, you. I am proud of you, Sai Sai!” Did you know that researchers at the American Animal Charity Evaluators found that each vegan saves almost 105 animals per year? “(When I opened the sixth restaurant, that day, many animal friends, one by one, came to greet me. It really benefits our animal friends.)” The wise Supreme Master Ching Hai has so much insight into what keeps our world in balance, and how we can make it more of a Heavenly abode. She even points out, “Many animals have a higher LQ than humans.” Master reveals: “The whales, the seals, and the cows, which have 300% LQ.” You may be surprised… “The human average is 20% LQ.” During an interview with “The Irish Dog Journal” in 2009, Master also expounded the vital roles animals play on Earth. “Many of them are able to bring down divine power from Heaven, or love, just through their presence, because they are very connected with the Divine at all times. Some of them are from higher levels of consciousness; they only came down in animal form to help humankind or other beings on Earth.” We were elated when She formally recognized courageous animals and honored them with Shining World Hero Awards. “We hereby applaud and celebrate the heroic deeds of the Great Guardian Pyrenees, Odin. With Gratitude, Best Wishes and All My Love, Supreme Master Ching Hai”

Celebrating Christmas and New Year with Our Animal-People Companions, Part 1 of 2

17:46

Celebrating Christmas and New Year with Our Animal-People Companions, Part 1 of 2

During this festive period, it can be fun to include your animal-people companions in the celebrations. We love to be included in family activities and to really be regarded as members of the family. You could invite them to be a part of family portraits and other photos, including ones taken for family Christmas cards. Some animal-people will enjoy dressing up in whimsical costumes such as Santa hats, or even wearing reindeer-people antlers headband. Guess what? We also love to receive gifts, so you could buy us a present too. We all love to be spoiled and to feel included. I’ve also seen animal-people companions have so much fun with another very unique gift: the gift of “you!” Step 1. Find a big box that you can hide yourself in. Step 2. Cut out the bottom of the box. Step 3 is optional: You can wrap the box in wrapping paper. And, finally, step 4: Hide in the box, and let your animal-people companions try to find you in there! You could remind your furry family members how much you love them, not only by telling them but also by showing them! But I do encourage all viewers to please remember that all of us animal-people have different personalities. So, observe your animal-people companions and see what they like. I would love to tell you a mighty secret. One thing we animal-people love the most is for our family members to be happy, content and peaceful. Billie Dean is a wonderful animal-people communicator who has communicated with animal-persons since she was a little girl. “Please tell humans to grow up and to evolve into the better species. They have the seeds, the kernels – this is what they say to me – human beings have the seeds, the kernels to be beautiful, but they’re still stuck in these what I call the third dimension, they’re still stuck in these dark ages. And we have to grow up; we have to move, we have to change. It means shifting what we do. And one of those things that we have to change is of course eating other animals. So that’s the first thing.” We very much want a peaceful, blissful, vegan world for all humans and for all animal-people big and small.

World Bee Day – We Must Buzz to the Bee’s Rescue!

World Bee Day – We Must Buzz to the Bee’s Rescue!

Benevolent viewers, my name is Engeleis, and I am a vegan honey bee. World Bee Day is celebrated each year on May 20. The caring nation of Slovenia, ever concerned with our well-being and preservation, launched The World Bee Day initiative in 2014. It is estimated that we bees influence one out of every three bites of food humans consume, so we are vital for human food security. Common fruit crops such as almonds, apples, blueberries, pumpkins, and tomatoes, as well as countless vegetables, nuts, oilseeds and spices, rely on us to carry the pollen that gives them life. In order to produce optimal quality, certain fruits even require us to carry out multiple trips in order to deliver sufficient grains of pollen. For example, apples may require four to five hauls and strawberries … no less than 21 deliveries! All will be well though - we the busy bees are diligent workers! For decades, the global population of bees has been experiencing an alarming decline. More than 700 of the 4,000 North American native bee species face extinction. The primary causes of our population drop are habitat loss, pesticides, herbicides, and climate change. Although the majority of us pollinators are small in size, we do our best to contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow all the world’s co-inhabitants to thrive. Unfortunately, we are in clear and present danger now. Please “bee engaged” in saving us! It only takes a few easy steps, such as planting a pollinator-friendly garden with diverse flowers and trees rich in pollen and nectar. Single flowering plants such as: daisies, marigolds and sunflowers produce more nectar and offer easier access to pollen. We also enjoy landing on purple flowers such as: alliums, chives and lavender as we detect purple much more clearly than any other color. Consider participating in preservation campaigns associated with World Bee Day and supporting local environmental groups working to revive our populations.

In Celebration of Be Kind to Animals Week - How to be a Gracious Host for the Animals, Part 1 of 3

Be Kind to Animals Week has been observed in the first full week of May every year since 1973. Although it started in the US, this is a celebration of compassion that all of humanity can participate in. In honor of Be Kind to Animals Week, we start this three-part series of shows by exploring ways to make your home inviting and accommodating for wildlife of the air, specifically birds. Many human friends have a front yard and backyard or even a balcony which can serve as a small sanctuary for our feathered friends. Birds may be attracted to a garden or porch by offerings of food. Just as a guest comes into your home and you may offer him some tea and vegan biscuits, offering some food is a lovely way to make friends with local birds. “It’s a profoundly important thing for some people. It’s a way of connecting with nature in a truly simple way.” But it is important to remember that to be a gracious host involves feeding responsibly. The key is to research what type of food is beneficial for these winged friends so that you are helping to keep them healthy. For most birds, a round, flat dish such as the kind usually found at the bottom of a pot plant makes a great serving platter. And it’s important to remember that the food you provide is intended to be a snack – so please don’t feed too much.Birds such as woodpeckers, chickadees, yellow-rumpled warblers, wrens and more love eating a certain specialty… vegan suet! Vegan suet may be made from organic, non-genetically modified ingredients such as millet, peanut butter, and raisins.Hummingbirds are attracted to gardens that have trumpet-shaped or tubular flowers in vibrant colors such as red, orange, blue and yellow, and blossoms that contain a lot of nectar. Many people take delight in feeding hummingbirds via purpose-built feeders. The United States-based Hummingbird Society gives a recipe calling for 200 grams (1 cup) of white cane sugar, and 710 or 950 milliliters (3 or 4 cups) of spring water. It’s important to note that the sugar used needs to be white cane sugar. As any great host knows, the other part of serving food to friends at gatherings is the clean-up! Cleaning bird feeders is essential for bird health, so please pay close attention to how to do it best.

Animals’ Innate Ability to Self-Medicate

Animals’ Innate Ability to Self-Medicate

Today we will discover some fascinating examples of how animals are able to heal themselves through self-medication, or zoopharmacognosy, by using their intuitive abilities to detect the healing properties of plants. Parasite removal is the most common use of natural therapeutic medicines by animals. In a couple of well documented cases, sick chimpanzees swallowed the juice of the Vernonia Amygdalina plant, a member of the daisy family, which is so bitter that chimpanzees never normally eat it. The ill chimpanzees recovered the following day, as Vernonia Amygdalina contains many substances which are effective against parasites. In North America, when bears come out of hibernation after winter, they look for osha roots and eat them, or rub them through their fur, which protects them from parasites and also treats bites. Many bird species ward off parasites ingeniously with the help of another animal – ants. More than 200 species of birds, including many songbirds, crows, pheasants and turkeys, have been observed performing “anting,” in which they lie down on anthills, with their wings and tail feathers spread out, and let hundreds of ants pass through their plumage. Pregnant female lemurs in Madagascar eat more tannin-rich leaves of the fihamy and kily plants in the weeks before they give birth. A small dose of tannin can boost immunity, prevent miscarriage and stimulate milk production. Some animals use herbs to clean up their home surroundings and thus prevent diseases. Dusty-footed woodrats nibble Californian bay laurel leaves, releasing substances which can dispel flea larvae and other parasites. In one study, scientists observed that when the hive was infected with a poisonous fungus, honey bees prioritized the production of propolis over their other usual activities like honeycomb construction and pollen collection, and painted it on the interior hive walls, where it worked as a natural antibiotic. Geophagia, or eating soil, is another popular preventive therapy in the animal kingdom. Sodium is an essential mineral for all animals’ healthy nerve function and muscle strength, but it’s very scarce in these parrots’ diet. Therefore, the parrots eat clay as their sodium supplement, and do so more frequently during their breeding season when their nutritional demand is at its highest.

The Tenderhearted Love of Animal Mothers

The Tenderhearted Love of Animal Mothers

A mother’s love is absolute and pure. Whenever her babies are in need, a mother always tries her best to help them without even considering her own safety. One day in the summer of 2019, Animal Aid Unlimited, an Udaipur, India-based non-profit that helps street animals, received an urgent call. A stray dog was howling and crying frantically for help because her puppies were buried in the debris of a collapsed house. The anxious mother even joined the rescuer to dig with her paws and tore at the rubble to speed up the process. Upon hearing the cries of her puppies, the mother dog obviously felt greatly relieved. Like whales, bottlenose dolphins have also shown marine researchers that they are very devoted mothers. They take care of and protect their calf for up to six years before he or she becomes totally independent. They raise only one calf at a time. Marine biologists discovered an unprecedented case in August 2019 off the coast of Rangiroa Atoll in French Polynesia. A bottlenose mother dolphin was found swimming with two calves, and one of them was obviously of a different species. It is an incredible case: a mother dolphin had adopted a whale calf! A mother’s love can go beyond her own species. Whenever babies need their mom, she is always there to help, protect, and nurture them. Heartwarming footage was taken by Ms. Jessie Larson while driving down Baby Doll Road in Port Orchard, Washington, USA. She spotted a female deer and her fawn on the street. The pair eventually noticed the car, and the doe ran away, but the little baby froze in shock in the middle of the road and just laid down on his stomach. The mother deer came over and gently nudged the fawn. Her touch was so tender and encouraging, and with so much love, that the frightened fawn eventually managed to get up and walk with the mother to safety. The power of a mother’s loving encouragement makes a big difference!

Animal Species with Strong Family Bonds

Animal Species with Strong Family Bonds

In today’s program, we will share with you some amazing animals who have strong relationships with one another, and who display a deep loving connection within their family. Our species, the Eurasian wolf, is the subspecies of the grey wolf. We wolves may look tough, but our hearts are warm and soft. We are extremely loyal, and family is a priority for us. You know, living together in a pack helps to strengthen the bonds between members. The strong ones take care of the weak. The wise share their knowledge and experience. Just like wolves, elephants live in a structured social order called a herd, led by the oldest and wisest female. While males leave the herd and live alone when they reach adulthood, females spend their whole lives with their families and friends. In 2008 researchers spotted a group of 15 dolphins teaming up to help save their injured friend. Amazing! Dolphins like to help each other whenever possible. They are good at teamwork, even in dating. Pigs love to eat, sleep, and play with each other in small groups. Like elephants, these groups have a matriarchal family structure, which means that females hold the positions of power. Members of a group are also so close together that female pigs help nursing, teaching, and taking care of each other’s piglets as well as their own. Sure! The same goes for cows. The strong bond that they have with their family and friends can last for their entire lives. Indeed, if a mother cow starts to see any signs of her calf being separated from her, she will quickly become alarmed and angry, and then cry and bellow for hours. I found a heartbreaking video from New Zealand of a mother cow chasing after her calves who were being taken away on a truck. So... what makes strong family bonds? The answer is simple: unconditional love. It’s when one is always willing to be there for others, and always puts them first. Please make the connection: Animals are just the same as humans in our love for our family and friends. We all deserve to live happily together too. If you haven’t already, please eat a noble diet: Be vegan! Please help to make the world become a place filled with only love, peace, and harmony.

The Secrets to Birds' Vibrant Plumage Coloration, Part 1 of 2

The Secrets to Birds' Vibrant Plumage Coloration, Part 1 of 2

"We belong to the family of passerine birds, who are renowned for the striking colors the males display on their plumage. Many people consider us one of the most beautiful birds in North America. Therefore, we have a nickname 'nonpareil' in French, which means “without equal.” In Mexico we are commonly known as siete colores, meaning 'seven colors.' ""Carotenoids, melanin and porphyrins are the three substances we metabolize into the three pigments found in a birds’ feather palette. Red, orange, and yellow feathers come from the carotenoids we absorb through what we eat since our bodies cannot synthetize them.""Melanin displays as black, brown, grey or earth-toned colors in our feathers. This is the same pigment that determines the hair and skin color of humans. While the colors that melanin produces are not as bright as carotenoids, the majority of our complex plumage patterns actually come from melanin because unlike carotenoids, melanin can be synthesized in our bodies." "Melanin not only colors our feathers, but also reinforces their strength and resistance to abrasion. That’s why many seabird species, especially the ones which migrate long distances, have black wing tips or black primary feathers.""The vibrant hues of pinks, reds, browns and greens noted on the plumage of owls, peacocks and pigeons are derived from porphyrins." "Parrots synthetize special red, orange and yellow pigments called psittacofulvins that are not found in other birds or plants. As a result, the brightness of their feathers is not affected by their diet.""The nanostructures in the blue feathers reflect blue light rays in an orderly way, in which they reinforce each other. If we were to shine white light from behind a blue feather of a male Indigo Bunting, it would appear brown-black due to the melanin in it. Meanwhile, its green feathers are colored by the combination of the blue light reflected by its structural composition and the yellow color of its carotenoid pigment."

Four Seasons, Part 3 of 4: Mellow Sounds of Autumn

Four Seasons, Part 3 of 4: Mellow Sounds of Autumn

Autumn is one of the most striking seasons of the year up here in the mountains! You will be in awe at the splendid palette of colors nature uses: vibrant tones of red, yellow, brown and orange! As we gaze at the beautiful trees and limpid skies, our feet rejoice in the rustling of the leaves covering the ground, after graciously circling around us as to say a last farewell. To prepare for the coming cold months of winter, my animal friends are actively gathering fruits and vegetables, grains and nuts. Take the alpine marmots for example, our nearby neighbors, who travel back and forth stockpiling reserves of nuts prior to their winter hibernation. All the while their birdlike sounds seem to hover over our grassy hillsides. These marmots are sociable folks with thick fur coats and cute little faces. Meet also the red squirrels, whose coat colors range from vivid ginger to dark brown. The squirrels are quite a musical tribe, and they emit a variety of sounds from chirping, purring, squealing and even… barking!Occasionally I spot Romanian brown bears making rustling sounds as they busily gather dry leaves and grasses. Throughout winter the bears will stay in their burrows, protected by a slope or heavy rocks. With their healthy diet of vegetables, berries, nuts, plums, grasses and roots, these gentle giants can reach a towering height of 2 meters and weigh a whopping 100 to 350 kilograms! On the thick grassy plains, male black grouses are rehearsing their mating dance and their assortment of bubbling, sneezing, hissing chooo-eee sounds, in the hope of attracting the attention of their female friends.Another sight of fall is the majestic and disciplined geese, who grace the skies in large formations as they head south for the warmer weather. Their honking calls echo over the land as they migrate impressive distances to reach the same destination every year, with transit stops at the same resting spots along the way.
