I have a healthy nutrition tip to share with you! Did you know there are many health benefits to eating sesame? It contains lignans, which is a kind of soluble fiber that assists in hydrating and increasing stool volume, helping prevent constipation and useful to regulate blood sugar levels and improve gastrointestinal health. One of these lignans is called sesamin, which is linked to the improved metabolism of fats in the body. Sesamin helps decrease LDL cholesterol and thereby lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease. Sesame is also abundant in polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, which are antioxidants and provide anti-inflammatory effects. As a result, eating sesame helps relax blood vessels and control blood pressure. It is recommended you consume one to two tablespoons (14 to 28 grams) of sesame daily, ideally distributed throughout the day and not at once. You can eat it in its natural form as seeds topped on salads or you can use it to make cookies, cakes, breads or as a paste called tahini.
