New legislation was recently enacted in Spain mandating all schools to offer a vegan menu to students. If a school cannot do this, it must allow students to refrigerate vegan meals brought from home and then reheat them. The Royal Decree on Healthy and Sustainable School Cafeterias also states that schools should serve more vegetables, fruit, and legumes. The changes are in line with the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), whose latest update recommends eating legumes two to four times a week, and ideally every day, to lessen animal-person protein consumption. The new rule has been enthusiastically welcomed by ProVeg Spain. Spain is a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion.

Excellent news, Spain, on your law to increase the availability of vegan food for students. In the grace of the Divine, may your noble government continue its push to encourage Spanish citizens to eat more vegan fare. And it would be extraordinary to decorate your wholesome country with all citizens’ pride as the first-ever VEGAN NATION.

Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan): “Joyfully present the Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion to the Government of Spain, with a high salute, praise, and heartfelt gratitude for your benevolent law ensuring vegan meal options that provide healthy and wholesome food to schoolchildren. May God bless you and your citizens with abundance, happiness and good health.”
