The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: A Globally Urgent Call

The international Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued its special report on limiting global warming on Monday October 8, 2018. UN Chief, His Excellency Antònio Guterres said that this message should be heard around the world as an “ear-splitting wake-up call,” and that the long-awaited findings show that, “climate change is running faster than we are - and we are running out of time,” At a speech on September 10, 2018 at UN headquarter, His Excellency Antònio Guterres delivered a speech on Climate Change.

Climate Crisis: Our Oceans are Rising, Part 2 of 2

In today’s program, we will learn about the effects that Sea Level Rise (SLR) is having on our coastal communities, how it will affect the world in years to come, and what we can still do about it before it’s too late. A research paper entitled “World Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency” was published in the January 2020 issue of BioScience. The Paper, written in collaboration with the American Institute of Biological Sciences, was ratified by 11,258 scientists from 153 countries. It identified six major solutions put forward as the last opportunity we have to reverse the climate change crisis. This includes: replacing fossil fuels with renewables, reducing climate pollutants such as methane and carbon, protecting and restoring our ecosystems – this means stopping land clearing, reducing meat consumption, moving away from an interest in improving GDP and loking at human health and well-being instead, and also slowing down and stabilizing human population growth. What this tells us, and what we can no longer ignore with over 11,000 scientists in agreement, is that the biggest cause of global warming is raising livestock animals. And therefore the single most important step this world needs to take is to stop eating animals and to adopt a plant-based lifestyle.

COP-24 - World Leaders Call for a Sustainable Planet, Part 1 of 2

From December 2-14, 2018, the United Nations Conference of the Parties Climate Change Conference (COP-24) was held in Katowice, Poland. Which called for a worldwide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to curb global warming. And that we have just over a decade to bring emissions under control. According to scientists, livestock raising is responsible for approximately 51% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Now really, it’s very important to reduce the meat consumption, to change our ways to produce and to consume if we want to fight against climate change. It’s good for you. It’s good for the planet.

Conservation Agriculture - Growing into a Brighter Future: Interview with Dr. Amir Kassam, Part 2 of 2 (INT)

Conservation agriculture is a new method of farming with a wide range of environmental benefits. That, if on a large-area basis, all the farmers convert to conservation agriculture, that means that we have agriculture which is not a net emitter of greenhouse gases, but it becomes a mitigator of global warming. And also, farmers find that instead of polluting the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, it gets locked into the soil, it improves their soil health and soil productivity. And that means that the whole soil function changes. And in the long term, we have to change our education system. And also, the institutions, research and extension systems which are there to help the farmers must begin to align themselves behind this new paradigm.

Treasured Oceans: What We Can Do to End Fish Depletion and Coral Bleaching, Part 1 of 2

With Ms. Narantuya Davaa, an environmental consultant from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the purpose is to raise the public's awareness that the oceans are vital to humanity and share ways, we all can help safeguard this precious resource. Over the years, cause devastating damage to the natural habitat and ecological balance of the oceans, and destroyed coral reef ecosystems. In addition to overfishing and warming sea temperatures, ocean acidification adds to the detrimental effects. The real driving force behind overfishing is the demand for fish as food. Switching to an organic plant-based diet, is the foremost solution that will save our oceans.

Sustainable Cocoa: A Global Effort, Part 1 of 2

Through the years, cocoa cultivation has grown to the point where the crop is now being mass produced. Environmental groups and other organizations have voiced concern over the mounting ecological impact of the expansion of cocoa farming. One result of this expansion is the clearing of tropical forest areas required for cocoa farms. “Without action,” the report reads, “Ghana stands to lose all remaining forests outside its national parks in the next decade.” Fortunately, as global awareness of the deforestation caused by cocoa farming has grown, so has the increase in efforts to restore the precious tropical forests.

Animal Agriculture’s Generation of Deadly Black Carbon

We examine the effects of the short-lived climate forcer, Black Carbon, in ice masses and planetary warming, and the role that animal agriculture and deforestation for livestock raising play in intensifying Black Carbon’s impact. Black Carbon, also known as soot, is a powerful warming agent that originates from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, diesel exhaust, inefficient cook stoves mainly used in developing countries burning biomass such as dried dung, wood, brush, or crop residue as fuel, and the clearing forests and savannas with fire.

Climate Change: Consequences and Cures

DR. Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge University and a world authority on polar sea ice research. We are building up a steadily growing effect on our climate, it’s really causing very, very serious problems for mankind. So, it’s an emergency. Something has to be done. And we can’t carry on living the way that we are living. DR. Wadhams, remains hopeful. He believes that we can mitigate global warming through changes in our energy use and diet. Reducing the use of animal food and increasing the use of vegetable food is a good thing for the climate.

Sustainable Cocoa: A Global Effort, Part 2 of 2

As chocolate becomes ever more popular, the demand for cocoa will continue to rise. And in order to produce more cocoa without causing environmental damage such as deforestation and soil degradation, cocoa farmers need to adopt more sustainable agricultural method. A research team from Zurich’s Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) has found solutions to some of these problems. In the next part of the show, we’ll examine a serious issue surrounding cocoa production - child labor. The chocolate value chain is unevenly distributed. Most cocoa farmers do not receive a fair share of this money. As consumers, we can help end this practice by purchasing Fair Trade certified products.

Global Sustainability: The Future of Earth Rests in Our Hands, Part 2 of 2

Over the last 50 years, we've actually exponentially moved in the wrong direction, for the last ten thousand years. But equally, that what we do over the next 50 years will determine our outcome for the next ten thousand years. As Dr.Rockstrom shares his insights on how we can restore the health of our precious planet. That we need to peak emissions of greenhouse gases no later than 2020. Must take us to a net zero carbon economy by mid-century. Let's hope we do so.

Climate Change, a “Code Red” Global Emergency - Part 1 of 3

A paper published in 2012 by 22 scientists started off by saying, “Humans now dominate the Earth changing it in ways that threaten its abilities to sustain us and other species.” 22 scientists! Very impressive. I think that from what I’m seeing, we could say that Mother Earth is facing a real risk of death now. And we need to put her into intensive emergency care, just like any doctor or nurse would for any critical patient. She is very sick. And her emergency first responders, the paramedics in this analogy, could be each and every one of the seven billion people on the planet.

Consequences of Global Warming, Part 2 of 2

Animal agriculture is putting a lot of stress on the planet’s ecosystem, they are known to emit large amounts of greenhouse gases that heats up the planet, causing bizarre weather patterns. As more and more heat-trapping gases are emitted into the atmosphere, the Earth gets warmer and as a result, the warming effect causes changes that make our weather pattern more life-threatening. Apart from extreme heatwaves, natural disasters like floods and hurricanes have become ever more frequent. Planet earth is in danger. We must do all we can to restore the ecological balance of our home.

On today’s show, we’ll learn about his third award-winning conservation documentary about the Vaquita, an endangered species of porpoise. “And at the time we began the project it was considered the world’s most endangered marine mammal. And at that time, the population estimate was about 100 individuals but it was declining at a very rapid rate.” “And we premiered it at Sundance this past January where it won the Audience Award in the international documentary category. And then it got picked up for distribution by National Geographic at the end of the festival. So, now we’re on this whirlwind tour and the film is getting a ton of exposure, which means the issue is getting a ton of exposure.”
