Quokka – The World’s Happiest Animal

Quokka – The World’s Happiest Animal

With our round cheeks and wide smiles, we quokkas have been dubbed one of the cutest animals on our planet. We are covered with short, very course and thick, grizzled brown fur with lighter parts underneath. Our relatively short tail has very little hair, but our feet are very hairy! On our cute and lovely face are a big, black nose, a pleasing mouth, and a pair of charming black eyes. In 2013, quokkas were given the title of “The Happiest Animal in the World” by American news website HuffPost.Com, because to humans, we always seem to be smiling. Our cutest chubby-cheeked smile can range from a tiny beam to a toothy grin. It is not that the structure of our mouth or jaw makes us have to smile. It is our cheerful nature. Our biggest threat is deforestation, which reduces our habitat ranges and food sources. Climate change, which affects the vegetation and rainfall, is also a threat to us. We urgently call for global action to stop the destruction of natural habitats and the adoption by humans of the sustainable vegan lifestyle.

The Coolest Animal Dads, Part 2 of 2

00:15:20

The Coolest Animal Dads, Part 2 of 2

In this episode, I will introduce more extraordinary cool daddies in the animal world. They are all champion fathers in their own ways. The endurance winner is the emperor penguin dad, for sure! These fluffy and wobbling birds live and breed in the Antarctic landscape. In winter, after the female transfers her precious single egg to her partner, she goes to the sea straight away to replenish herself with food. To keep the egg warm in the brutal Antarctic weather, he must balance it on top of his feet and press it up against his “brood pouch,” a skin flap on his belly, and cover the egg with his plumage. Additionally, he utilizes group hugs to his advantage! Emperor penguins are famous for creating massive huddles, and these gatherings allow penguins to save energy for warming their cherished chicks that are still developing. Until the moms’ return, these dads guard their eggs alone for around 75 days. They also fast for about 120 days from the beginning of the breeding cycle, which ultimately results in their body weight being reduced by nearly half. Male Barbary macaques are perhaps the proudest animal dads. They often interact with their offspring for hours and carry them; this doting on infants includes caring for the young of others in their group, called a troop, as well. These proud dads nudge and chatter their teeth while holding up their darlings in gatherings. Sand gobies are passionate papas at the top of their game. After the eggs are laid, they defend the eggs intensively and use their pectoral fins to fan them with a motherly touch. This action creates oxygenated currents around the eggs, which encourages them to grow. Giant water bug fathers are the clear winners of the weightlifting category. The female will lay and stick her eggs on the dad’s back. A giant water bug dad can carry up to 150 eggs on him! When talking about heroic fathers, few can match the Burchell’s sandgrouse. The brave sandgrouse daddies take on a crucial mission; these frequent flyers make long daily trips to watering holes, sometimes traveling over 160 kilometers, to fill up for their families. After the little ones have their drink, the daddies immediately take sand baths, to remove the strong scent of wet feathers to deter predators. In this series, we have introduced some extraordinary paternal parenting skills in the animal kingdom, which make for a wonderful dedication to all fathers, be they human or animal.

Showing Love with Pig Vigils - Eder Lopez (vegan) and the Animal Alliance Network

October 2nd of every year has been designated “World Farm Animals Day” or “World Day for Farmed Animals.” It is not a day to commemorate the happy life of animals on farms, but to call for their rescue as animals there are severely exploited for various purposes. In today’s program, it is our privilege to interview a compassionate American vegan animal rights activist who exemplifies the spirit of the day, Mr. Eder Lopez. Eder is the vice president of the non-profit Animal Alliance Network, one of the 700 chapters of a global organization called the Animal Save Movement that conducts vigils outside of slaughterhouses. Animal Alliance Network’s mission is to “educate, take action, do outreach, and spread awareness of the daily atrocities animals endure due to human practices.” Eder organizes pig vigils every Wednesday night that stop trucks full of baby pigs to give water and show love to them before they head to slaughter. Through this movement, he hopes to raise the public’s awareness of animal cruelty and exploitation in hopes that one day people will stop eating meat and allow farm animals to be free to live their lives. “We call them pig vigils. We’re here to bear witness, meaning, where we see suffering, like these pigs are suffering, and we don’t run away. We get as close as possible, because if we were in that position, if we were in their shoes, we would want help, like the activists that are here today. Put yourself in a cage. It’s all about perspective. Put yourself in the victim’s role, and then you’ll understand why we do this. Because it’s about them. They’re the ones suffering. And even though we’re here only giving them two minutes, that two minutes is the only love that they’ve ever received. And at least they go out feeling some type of love before they go to their death.” “I want everybody to live a happy life. And the best way to do that is by what you choose to eat. And choose the compassionate one, because we live in a world of choices. Why do you choose to be cruel? That’s not a good thing. It’s 2020. It’s about peace and love. So, choose compassion. Choose love right now.” The pig vigils organized by Eder Lopez and the Animal Alliance Network are powerful wake-up calls for us all to be plant-based and end animal slaughter immediately. May his honorable and loving project reach many more hearts, in Heaven’s grace.

Therapy Animals: Incarnations of Love

I’m Aina, a vegan miniature horse from magnificent Germany. People are more relaxed when they spend time with animals because we give unconditional love and do not judge them in any way. Research has shown that caring for animals increases overall human well-being in many respects. Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, pigs and other species serve as therapy animals. Many agree that simply being around their dog companion fills their heart with a sense of happiness, contentment, and peace. Those with cat companions also express how much fun, peace, and happiness these amazing beings bring into their lives. Daniel is an Indian Runner duck and a registered emotional support animal. We beautiful and intelligent miniature horses also serve as therapy animals. We have aided many, including survivors of tragedies and disasters. Animals give tremendous love and can help meet people’s physical, behavioral, and emotional needs.

Remarkable Sharks

00:12:55

Remarkable Sharks

Welcome to our show entitled, “Remarkable Sharks.” Sharks are one of the most misunderstood animals in the world. People just do not realize that we are much friendlier than believed. We are often portrayed as a villain in the movies. Actually, we are quite a unique and fascinating species. We have existed for more than 420 million years, appearing on earth even before the dinosaurs. Also, we are very diverse, with over 500 species, and researchers believe that there may still be undiscovered varieties. The whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, whose length can reach up to 18 meters. The smallest shark is the dwarf lantern shark, which is around 17-20 centimeters in length, as tiny as a human hand. On average, a shark can swim 32-64 kilometers per hour. We do not have bones in our bodies. Our skeleton is made of cartilage, which makes us light and flexible, and allows us to rise and sink quickly in the ocean. Sharks do not sleep the way that humans do. Some species constantly swim, even while they sleep. They keep their mouths open while moving so that oxygen-rich water can pass through the gills. Anna Breytenbach, a professional telepathic animal communicator, has made contact with the white sharks and received a message from them. She says they are “asking for peaceful coexistence.” We sharks are peaceful beings. When people swim close to our area, we just want to know who they are and feel their energy. We will leave them alone because we sense their friendly vibes. We sharks play a vital role in balancing the ocean’s ecosystem. Without sharks, the population of many ocean species would be reduced. The simple, most important way to help sharks avoid going extinct is by adopting a plant-based diet. Please be a hero for all of us animals.

Our Animal Friends Are Just Like Us! Part 2 of 2

00:18:12

Our Animal Friends Are Just Like Us! Part 2 of 2

We animals are sentient beings. Not only are we bright but we also have the full range of feelings and emotions that you do – such as joy, empathy, compassion, grief, and fear. A study of dogs in the US also provides further evidence that we animals experience emotions. Dr. Gregory Berns, a vegetarian neuroscience expert from the USA, found something amazing. When dogs saw a hand gesture for a treat, the region of the brain called the caudate nucleus, that exists both in dogs and humans, produced the same reaction found in the human brain when a person anticipates desirable things like food or money. Animals look out for one another as well! What about gratitude? Most certainly, we animals are deeply grateful when we receive help from others. Every species is so happy and excited when a new baby is born! When a calf is born to an elephant family, every member is so cheerful!

Exceptional Friendships Between Different Species

00:16:35

Exceptional Friendships Between Different Species

Today we will showcase several unusual relationships between animals that are very different from each other. In 2004, a massive earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean caused tsunamis that devastated the surrounding coasts. The high waters swept a hippopotamus family in Kenya down a river and into the ocean. The only survivor, a baby, ended up on a reef off the Kenyan coastline. They named him Owen and arranged for him to be transported to Haller Park, a Kenyan wildlife sanctuary. Owen was put in an enclosure that contained an Aldabra giant tortoise known as Mzee. The two began sharing food, swimming, and sleeping together, and sometimes Mzee would stretch out his neck so Owen could lick it. The next story rather reminds me of a fairy tale. One day in 2013, Mr. Berge and his German shepherd companion Tinni were taking a walk through the woods near their home. They came across an amiable red fox who Mr. Berge named Sniffer. Amazingly, the domesticated dog and the wild fox took a liking to each other.

American Bison: Supremely Self-Giving and Uniquely Resilient

American Bison: Supremely Self-Giving and Uniquely Resilient

In the United States, the bison is an iconic animal, commonly referred to as the American buffalo. When we are babies, we are called “red dogs” because of our orange-red fur. As we grow up, the hair turns dark brown. We have distinctive physical features – a huge head with short, curving black horns, a big, muscular shoulder hump and a shaggy coat. The hair in the front is longer than in the rear. Our hooves are circular and strong; when we run, the dust they kick up makes for a spectacular scene. As a matter of fact, many of our activities have a positive impact on the ecosystem. The way that we graze not only provides nesting grounds for our winged friends, but by feeding mostly on grasses and avoiding other plants, we influence biodiversity. During harsh winters, our size and strength enable us to plow through deep snow, creating pathways that other animals can use to reach food. Before immigrants came to North America from Europe, there were 30-60 million bison roaming the continent – from northern Canada to Mexico, and from eastern Washington to New York. They were integral to the lives of the indigenous tribes living on the Northern Great Plains. A spiritual connection developed to such an extent that the people appreciated us as their brothers. This relationship was reinforced by ceremonies and dances. In 2014, then-Cherokee Nation Principal Chief, the Honorable Bill John Baker expressed it this way, “For most of us, the American bison symbolizes our great country – free, strong and resilient. Those are the traits we identify in ourselves as Indian people. That’s why the bison has always represented something deeply spiritual to our tribal ancestors.” Throughout history, the indigenous tribes of North America have held us in high regard and it is well known that Native American culture deeply cherishes our planet and nature. I think all humans can learn from this. At this crisis point for the Earth and its inhabitants, I invite you to pray with me that humanity will finally recognize the interconnectedness of all life and learn to duly honor all embodied souls by forsaking war and banning animal products forever. May people understand, once and for all, that they must be loving if they want our world to become a peaceful paradise for all beings.

The Diverse and Adaptable Tree-Climbing Crabs

00:12:44

The Diverse and Adaptable Tree-Climbing Crabs

We crabs come in all different sizes and colors, with other diverse characteristics, and have been known to survive in all sorts of living environments. Crabs that climb trees are so diverse it would probably take humans years and years to discover us all. The coconut crab is classified by your scientists as a hermit crab and is the largest land-living and tree-climbing crab in the world. We usually live in sand burrows we dig ourselves. Normally, our lifespan is between 30 and 60 years. We are able to climb up as high as 6 meters quite easily. Caribbean hermit crabs have a lot in common with coconut crabs. For example, they live on land and females go to the ocean to lay eggs. Another kind of tree-climbing crab is the one that lives in mangroves. Mangroves are the perfect environment for such crabs to live in and develop. One common characteristic shared between all tree-climbing crabs in mangrove areas is that they do not live far from the sea. We tree-climbing crabs truly cherish our lives and plea with humans to have compassion, never eat us or other animals, and protect our habitats.

The Marvelous Abilities of Birds, Part 2 of 2

00:14:34

The Marvelous Abilities of Birds, Part 2 of 2

Today, we will share with you about the bird species’ vocalizations, which include both calls and songs. Generally, our calls are brief and serve as alarms or to keep a flock together. Our songs are longer and more complex and may serve as signals of courtship. The songs are also more melodious. Both chicks and human infants build sound templates in their brains by listening to their parents’ voices. Then they start to strengthen their vocal muscles by making nonsensical sounds. In the last stage, young birds will practice the same tune thousands of times and compare it with the template they memorized until they achieve a perfect match. Our vocalizations are made possible by a voice organ, unlike any other. The organ that birds use to vocalize is called a syrinx, and it is lower down, just before the windpipe enters the lungs. The syrinx has two sides, which our most-gifted singers can use to simultaneously produce high-frequency and low-frequency sounds, plus at different tempos and volumes. For us birds, the better we can vocalize, the more likely it is that we will have fulfilling lives.

World Animal Day: A Catalyst for Uplifting Animals

00:15:26

World Animal Day: A Catalyst for Uplifting Animals

October 4 is World Animal Day, which is also the feast day of the Venerated Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Its mission is to raise awareness that animals’ status needs to be elevated to improve our welfare conditions around the globe. This day was humbly initiated almost 100 years ago and now has become a popular worldwide movement. Today, World Animal Day has become an internationally recognized brand and platform to promote animal welfare issues. More than 1,000 associated events are held every year and #WorldAnimalDay trends on social media all over the world. This day of love is celebrated in many different ways in many countries, regardless of differences in nationality, religion, or political ideology. Everyone can join in and contribute to this memorable occasion as animal welfare organizations, community groups, schools, businesses, and individuals are all encouraged to organize a celebration under the World Animal Day umbrella and use the same logo. The events are publicized on the website: WorldAnimalDay.org.uk. World Animal Day has led to substantial contributions in improving the well-being of animals, and its influence has increased over time. World Animal Day is an invaluable platform to encourage people worldwide to become involved in celebrating animals. We hope that you are inspired to join or organize an event, make a donation to your favorite animal charity, host a fundraising event for an animal sanctuary, or create a petition to ask for changes in the law to safeguard us. If you don’t have time to help with an event, you can also share World Animal Day news and posts with your friends. You can add the logo to your social media profile, or use #WorldAnimalDay to raise global awareness. Anything created under the World Animal Day umbrella, no matter how small it may seem to be, will generate positive energy and make the planet a better place for us animals. We look forward to the day that all animals and humans can live together in love and peace. And, if you aren’t already, please be vegan for the sake of all animals. When you eat plant-based, you immediately save animal lives and help ensure there is a beautiful planet, teeming with life, for future generations to enjoy.

Wildlife Conservation Day: A Call for Action

00:14:08

Wildlife Conservation Day: A Call for Action

Thousands of our wildlife co-inhabitants are facing a similar fate. Their populations have declined rapidly and many species are in imminent danger of extinction. According to a new report from the conservation group the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a Shining World Compassion Award recipient, human activity has caused the planet to lose two-thirds of its wildlife since 1970. In just over four decades, the global wildlife populations have dropped by an average of 68%. This rapidly decreasing rate is a warning that many wild animals will be extinct by the end of the 21st century. Some of them will disappear from the Earth before scientists even discover them. How can humans help assist with wildlife conservation and rehabilitation and steer us towards a pandemic-free world? I have some suggestions. Please help raise the awareness of how important animals are to the ecosystems through education. Work with local wildlife conservation programs and rehabilitation projects to learn more about endangered species, and how to protect them. Please use recycled and sustainable products, and support eco-friendly and green technologies that guard nature and the Earth. Please buy recycled and tree-free paper, which helps to reduce the felling of woodlands. Also, choose palm oil-free products to avoid forests from being bulldozed to create palm oil plantations, thus permanently displacing native species. Government and nature-focused non-governmental organizations worldwide should become involved in safeguarding all species by monitoring populations, restoring habitats, building more rehabilitation centers, and improving natural ecosystems. Another idea is to enact more pro-animal laws to shield wildlife, such as banning their trading, hunting, and poaching as well as prohibiting their use for amusement or consumption. Please refrain from purchasing souvenirs, shoes, clothing, or any other products made from animals such as ivory, bone, feathers, fur, turtle shell, leather, dried coral, and seashells. Avoid patronizing any events that profit from the use of wildlife, such as animal circuses and captive animal performances. In conclusion, the root solution for the immense, ongoing global destruction of wildlife is that humanity should change its diet to a compassionate plant-based one. A vegan food system not only benefits the health of humans and our planet but also can save our impressive planetary assortment of fauna from extinction. We should work hand in hand to protect our shared biosphere.

Celebrating Altruistic Animals on Supreme Master Ching Hai Day

It’s a good thing to celebrate. The Ching Hai Day is not only my day. It’s your day. It’s everyone’s day. “Ching Hai” is actually not just my name. It’s a name given, and it symbolizes the Pure Ocean of Love. That is in your heart, in everyone’s heart, in all beings’ hearts. And you can see that through some of our animal shows. You can see how animals, they treat humans with utmost love, devotion, and help, assistance, as much as they can, whenever they have a chance to do it. And they also treat each other kindly, lovingly, charitably. So these are all members of Ching Hai’s Day.

Stories of Love: Interspecies Animal Friendships

Unusual animal buddies feature special connections or interactions between two very dissimilar being. So, when it comes to unique animal friendships: the pairing of a dog with an owl, or an elephant with an orangutan or a cat and a mouse, our hearts are moved. Perhaps it is because we are reminded that in the long run, our differences are of the least importance and our similarities and love for each other matter most.

The Gentle Addax of Africa

00:13:47

The Gentle Addax of Africa

One of our distinguishing characteristics is a tuft of brown hair that grows from the base of our horns to our forehead. Then we have what looks like a white letter X across the bridge of our nose and around our eyes. We addax have a stocky build, similar to horses. Our diet is 100% plant-based. Although males are dominant in many species, we have the highest regard for our females. But due to habitat loss and humans’ inconsiderate activities over the years, our population in the wild has been drastically reduced. Humans must understand the impact that their values and lifestyles have. Each person who changes to a plant-based diet generates a wave of positive and benevolent energy that touches all living beings on the planet. Supreme Master Ching Hai is a cherished champion of compassion for us all. She tirelessly conveys to the world’s citizens that killing and eating animals are acts of fundamental immorality.

Secrets of Longevity in Animals, Part 1 of 2

00:13:36

Secrets of Longevity in Animals, Part 1 of 2

In this two-part program, we will showcase some of the species that live the longest. They are blessed with what is called “biological immortality.” We lobsters are one of those species! Researchers believe that the secret our longevity is an enzyme called telomerase. It protects the ends of chromosomes from shortening and losing some Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) when cells divide. Another species that exhibits “biological immortality” is the naked mole rat. Aside from their defenses against cancer, naked mole rats have two ways to keep their bodies young. Number one, they can withstand high amounts of oxidative stress. Number two, they have high levels of chaperone proteins that stabilize the correct folding of other proteins. As far as we know, Greenland sharks have the longest lifespan of any vertebrate species on the planet. One possible explanation is their extremely slow metabolic rate. Giant tortoises are world-renowned for their long lives. The scientists noted that compared to the mammals, the tortoises had more immune system-protecting gene copies - 12 to be exact, while the mammals only had one. These genes assist the body in neutralizing infections.

It’s Time to Acknowledge the Rights of Animals, Part 1 of 2

It’s Time to Acknowledge the Rights of Animals, Part 1 of 2

Do you know that December 10th is our day, International Animal Rights Day? In 1998, the organization Uncaged launched, on the same date as Human Rights Day, the first-ever International Animal Rights Day. Uncaged was founded in 1993, by Angela Roberts and Lynn Williamson and is now known as the Centre for Animals and Social Justice (CASJ). which acts as a voice for animals by carrying out pioneering research and furthering just animal treatment by promoting reforms that could better our welfare. Another UK-based group called Surge. Surge started “The Official Animal Rights March” in 2016 that has since become an annual event held not just in London, UK, but also around our world. The gathering’s purpose is to spark vegans everywhere to speak up for the animals and become active in driving positive change in their local communities.

The Cuddly Koala of Australia

00:12:13

The Cuddly Koala of Australia

Hi there, fellow tree lovers! I am Cobber the vegan koala from abundant Queensland, Australia. The name Cobber means “friend.” We koalas wish that all of you receive God’s bountiful blessings and love. We koalas are an Australian icon and are sometimes called cuddly koala bears, but we are actually a marsupial like the wallaby, kangaroo and wombat. Each koala has a territory with regular trees that they inhabit, an area called their “home range.” We sleep a lot! And even while we’re awake, we look sleepy sometimes. Well, there’s a very good reason for this - eucalyptus tree leaves, which make up the majority of our diet, have high concentrations of oils and are poisonous to most animals. Breaking down and digesting the leaves’ toxins and dense fibers uses a lot of energy, and we need plenty of rest to take care of this process, sleeping up to 18 hours or more a day. We are normally found resting in the fork of a comfy tree. During drought and extreme heat, though, we will take risky ventures to water sources as the leaves are depleted of moisture, which has been the case in 2019 with drier than normal conditions. We have quite a restricted range of habitat. Well, as you might have seen, it has been a rocky period for us Australian animals, especially us slow-moving koalas, with extreme bushfires devouring our homelands, and desperate scenes across eastern Australia. The Black Summer fires, or the Australian bushfires that started in the latter part of 2019 and lasted into the beginning of 2020, utterly devastated wildlife populations in the affected areas. Supreme Master Ching Hai has explained the deeper meaning of these wildfires that are occurring in Australia and globally and the unconditional love that animals and trees exhibit for humans. The best way you can help us koalas, and all wildlife, is by changing to a vegan lifestyle. What you eat is a powerful tool to save our planet’s resources, with plant-based foods being of the greatest benefit to you and your future generations. Not only will you be doing the planet a great favor, but you will also open yourself up to a world of exciting new foods. So join me in following a compassionate way of living and spreading the love.

Wings of Love, Part 2 of 2: The Faithful Albatross

00:13:37

Wings of Love, Part 2 of 2: The Faithful Albatross

Humanity is charmed by albatrosses. Since they can travel very long distances with grace and ease despite harsh weather conditions, they are praised as “the most legendary of all birds” and the “prince of waves.” Sailors believe they bring good luck for their voyages, and writers have used them as a symbol of God. They spend 90 to 95% of their life in flight. Reasons they come to land include to breed and feed their offspring. They can fly around the world in 46 days, and travel hundreds of kilometers daily. The grey-headed albatross is the fastest known bird for sustained extended travel, flying at up to 127 kilometers per hour for more than 8 hours. Albatrosses have virtually zero divorce rates. Each pair’s love dance routine is unique as a fingerprint, and the synchronized dancing consists of beak clattering, sky pointing, and other moves that are truly exquisite forms of art. It usually takes several years to cement their bonding through this dance. They select their partner patiently and prudently, and then devote their lives to each other. Although their time together is quite limited, they are loyal to each other for an estimated 50 years. Unfortunately, despite all their noble qualities, 17 of the 22 albatross species are threatened with extinction, with nine endangered or critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. If you have seen the documentary, “Albatross” by noted vegetarian American artist and filmmaker Chris Jordan, we are sure you were shocked by how plastic waste harms the albatrosses. The albatrosses’ condition mirrors how humanity treats the ocean. Fortunately, we have noticed numerous initiatives for the preservation of albatrosses and other seabirds. For example, an international treaty called the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels became effective in 2004.
