Hoatzin: The Enigmatic Bird

Hoatzin: The Enigmatic Bird

We hoatzins live in trees and shrubs among the swamps, tropical riverbanks, and mangroves around the Amazon and Orinoco rivers in South America. We are Guyana’s national bird and are honorably included in Guyana’s Coat of Arms. Interestingly, from an evolutionary standpoint, nobody really knows where we came from! We have an extraordinarily colorful appearance. With an un-feathered blue face and maroon eyes, our small head is topped with a cool, spiky 10-centimeter rufous crest, just like a punk rocker’s mohawk. Therefore, some locals call us “Punk Rock Birds.” Hoatzins are exclusively vegan, and along with the Owl Parrot, we are the only two bird species that primarily eat leaves. We also sometimes eat buds, flowers, and fruits as dessert. Foraging in the early morning and evening, we spend the rest of the day comfortably roosting. We have a very potent odor, and are also known as the stink or skunk bird of the marshes. We have a super-sized crop at the base of our throat to store and digest consumed leaves and fruits. This stinky smell is from the chemicals released during the fermentation process taking place in the crop, where bacteria slowly break down the fibrous leaves for us. The rumination process is just like a cow’s, so some people call us “flying cows.” What’s so special about our chicks? They have claws on their wings! While some other birds, such as chickens, kea parrots, and ostriches also have vestigial claws on their wings, we are the only living bird with functional ones that are important to our survival. These cool and handy wing claws are present and functional only when we are young. They disappear once we reach adulthood. The next time you join an Amazon River cruise, look for our spiky orange Mohawk, and listen for us!

Veterinarian Dr. Jonathan Bach - Healing with Animal Acupuncture, Part 1 of 2

Over the years, I’ve had a number of patients(animals) who have come in where they either couldn’t walk at all or were having a lot of difficulty walking. And through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, I was able to get them back up and walking again to the point where they were enjoying life again. I also have some patients that are dealing with chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease. They’ve done quite well on acupuncture. Acupuncture, a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is an ancient form of treatment that originated in China thousands of years ago.

A Golden Age of Animals

00:13:50

A Golden Age of Animals

Gold-colored animals are relatively rarer, so they are admired by humans, just like the precious metal! Regarded by some as the world’s most beautiful equine, our breed is famed for our toughness, resilience, and endurance, in addition to our legendary speed and intelligence. Some of our breed looks as if they had been dipped in gold! Another animal with a radiant, golden coat is the Golden Retriever, which is one of America’s most popular dog breeds. A domestic cat known for having a golden coat is the ginger cat or tabby. The golden jewel scarab beetle of Central America is one of the world’s most brightly colored insects. The goldenrod crab spiders, native to North America, make flowers such as goldenrod and daisies their home. The Panamanian golden frog is a type of toad. This species is cherished by Panamanians and is the national animal. Banana slugs are often bright golden yellow and sometimes spotted with brown blotches, thus resembling a ripe banana.

Dumbo Octopuses: Intelligent Lovelies of the Deep

Speaking of flying, that brings me to the cute nickname you all have given my kind. While our scientific genus name is grimpoteuthis, the nickname we have most popularly come to be known as is the “Dumbo octopus.” That name is based on the fictional character “Dumbo” from the 1941 animated Disney film of the same name. Humans should consider us octopuses as royalty as well, for we too have blue blood! Scientists already known that we octopuses are quite smart. They know we can find our way through mazes, figure out problems, and even remember the solutions to those problems. We can take things apart for fun, and researchers have also realized that each octopus has a distinct personality.

Przewalski’s Horse: Sacred Animal of Mongolia

Traditionally, the people of Mongolia have called us “takhi,” which means “spirit” or “worthy of worship.” Mongolians consider my kind of horse to be holy and that we are their messengers to be gods. Ganbaatar means “steel hero.” You can imagine that horses like me are not only strong but swift. When we run untethered and unconstrained across the Mongolian landscape, it is a spectacular sight to see.

Animals Splashing into Summer Fun

00:14:12

Animals Splashing into Summer Fun

Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere and we elephants love playing in the water and swimming! Lots of other kinds of animals do too. You may not realize it, but we can be quite nimble in the water! Because our bodies are so big, we have enough buoyancy to stay at the water’s surface and use our powerful legs to paddle. We sometimes utilize our trunks like a snorkel to breathe in deep water. So many dogs love to have fun with water! Cute canines are crazy about water slides. Did you know that some dogs surf? They enjoy riding the waves and exhibit great balance. Generally, cats are believed to strongly dislike water, but some breeds such as the Bengal cat, Maine Coon, Turkish Angora, Japanese Bobtail, American Bobtail, Manx, Norwegian Forest Cat, American Shorthair, and Turkish Van love to get wet. Actually, pigs are superb swimmers! Pig Beach, also known as Big Major Cay, is an uninhabited island located in Exuma, the Bahamas, where 20 pigs and piglets live, surrounded by the jade-colored ocean. The pigs are very sociable, and many tourists visit this unique island and swim with them. Our next water-loving friends are the sloths, which reside in the lush and tall trees of South and Central America. Considered one of the world's slowest mammals, they are clumsy walking on the ground due to their long claws, which are around 8-10 centimeters in length. Amazingly, sloths can slow their heart to one-third of its normal rate to hold their breath underwater for an astounding 40 minutes. Also from South America is the capybara, regarded as the largest living rodent in the world. They are semi-aquatic, which means that while they live on land, they spend a lot of time in the water. These friendly beings get along extremely well with other animal species. Most cockatoos and other kinds of parrots love to have a shower. The water will hydrate their feathers, soften dust and dirt, and keep their skin healthy. When possible, Supreme Master Ching Hai loves to spend time with Her adorable, adopted birds. Here is some footage recorded when She was with them in Florida, USA. The birds happily got sprayed to cool off!

Caring for Furry Pals During a Lockdown, Part 2 of 2

Caring for Furry Pals During a Lockdown, Part 2 of 2

"Today, Nala and I will cover more lockdown-related issues human caregivers need to be aware of concerning their beloved animal pals. I believe we also need some mental stimulation during these tough times. I think music is another good way to calm everyone down. While listening to these wonderful compositions, I am pacified and feel so relaxed. It just occurred to me that if an animal gets sick, how can the human parents help them get better?" "It’s really a challenge when furry kids fall ill during a lockdown. They should call their vet first and explain the symptoms to receive guidance on how to help. Never administer care without consulting with a veterinarian for advice as it may worsen the situation. It’s also advisable to keep a first aid kit on hand to ensure they get the help needed for timely treatment." "What if a human caregiver happens to get sick?" "In that case, they should arrange for someone else to care for their furry babies. If it’s not possible, as a precaution, they should not cuddle, pet, kiss, or share food or bedding with their four-legged kids. When lockdowns are lifted, people soon resume their normal workday routines, and their animal companions may have to make more adjustments. After the lockdown ended, I felt so down that I even lost my appetite when Mom returned to work." "That is a kind of separation anxiety. How can you prevent this from happening?" "They can start with short absences from home, gradually leaving their animal pal to spend more time alone. Other techniques include getting them to play with their toys independently or going to bed by themselves. Make sure the transition is as smooth and stress-free as possible so that the alteration isn’t too sudden. Even though lockdown measures are easing in some countries, we still cannot take it lightly. We need to take precautions to reduce our chances of being infected or spreading the virus if we want to protect our families."

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 2 of 2

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 2 of 2

In today’s program, I will introduce more touching stories about how 3D printing helps animals and the innovative 3D bioprinting technologies that could help hasten the end of the vile practice of animal testing in the future. In 2009, Seemore the green sea turtle was hit by a boat propeller in the Florida Keys. This hindered her ability to dive normally to find food in the wild and she could no longer live independently. After a computed tomography (CT) scan in July 2017, the team examined Seemore’s shell structure and the damage, and then selected the exo-shell design. The considerate project team attached the 3D printed prototypes to Seemore’s shell using Velcro during the testing process, so the prototypes could be easily removed, adjusted or reattached without moving Seemore out of her tank. Thanks to the team’s labor of love and Traner Knott’s loving care around the clock, Seemore can now happily dive like a normal turtle with her 3D printed backpack. Many new cosmetics, drugs, vaccines, and other products are often tested on animal models to determine their supposed efficacy and safety before human trials or being released into the market. There have been increasing protests against the unethical, inhumane and useless practice of animal testing in recent years, and compassionate scientists are responding with an eye-opening alternative - 3D bioprinting. Since the EU banned animal testing in cosmetics products in 2009, bioprinting human skin tissues for cosmetics testing has become the primary area of interest. In addition to skin tissues, other biocompatible human tissues can also be bioprinted. The organ-on-a-chip technology has the advantages of rapid response and precision control, hence researchers can test new medicine cheaper and quicker than animal models. On the other hand, the cool and creative 3D bioprinting technologies have great potential to save countless animal lives as researchers turn away from animal testing. May these life-saving technologies rapidly become more efficient and cheaper to benefit more animals, in God’s blessings.

Guardians of Health: Medical Detection Dogs

Greetings, delightful viewers! I am Bless, a medical detection dog from Wales. The canines from Wales wish peace and wellness to all of you! We canines excel in so many things. We make our human partners happy and healthy by lowering their stress levels, brightening their mood, and lessening their blood pressure simply by being near them. We are loyal, protective, loving, and fun. Scientific studies have proven that we can even save people’s lives by alerting them of disease or a serious shift in physical condition because our keen noses can sense tiny changes in odors from their bodies. Many accredited organizations, such as Medical Detection Dogs in Milton, UK, the American Scent Dog Association in Arkansas, USA, and Dogs4Diabetics in California, USA, train canines to identify odors associated with particular diseases using reward-based methods. Dogs have learned to detect various cancers such as breast, lung, prostate, ovarian, and colorectal. In addition, we can also point out the presence of malaria in a person and signal to people certain oncoming symptoms of type 1 diabetes, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and Addison’s disease. According to the late Dr. George Preti, a leading American scientific expert on human odors during his time, the metabolic chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by cancer cells change the smell of blood and other body fluids. Dogs can pick up the signature odors of existing cancer cells. In addition to odors, we can also pick up variations in skin temperature. This means that perhaps we could determine if someone is experiencing a fever. We love humans and are always willing to help. I am very happy that we dogs can assist people with life-threatening conditions. I am proud of all the canines that have excelled in helping individuals with medical disorders to have a normal life!

Veterinarian Dr. Du Bai: The World Through the Eyes of Our Animal Friends, Part 1 of 2

Not only do canine and feline companions provide psychological support to humans, but we also are very gifted in assisting with your physical conditions. But why are dogs and cats able to relieve your stress? It is because they can smell it with their nose. When you are very sad, and when you pour your heart out and talk to them, they can smell the changes in your hormones. So, in fact, they often comfort you. “It’s ok; it’s all right.” After all your sorrows are washed away, you will feel better.

Joy Fromental: Soul to Soul Communication with Animals, Part 1 of 3 (INT)

I met this elephant and right away, I was like in a bubble with him, and really transported. He explained that he and all the other elephants were part of this energy of peace. That they were contributing to equilibrium at a planetary level. There existed a huge egregor (collective group mind) of peace, of love and compassion that compensated for what is happening today in the world. One can get a further sense of the elephants’ deep spirituality from an inner communication Joy had with Pelusa the elephant. Pelusa’s message for our world gives hope and is full of insight. May all humanity hear these good tidings and wake up quickly so the new era that Pelusa speaks of comes about soon.

The Coolest Animal Dads, Part 1 of 2

00:15:26

The Coolest Animal Dads, Part 1 of 2

Being a father is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and their love is often underrated. It takes a tremendous amount of work and caring to be a good dad for both humans and animals alike. In this two-part program, I will introduce some of the greatest animal papas I know of, who demonstrate the essence of fatherhood through their dedication and sacrifices for their young. The first great fathers in the animal kingdom to discuss are the red fox dads. In March, when the babies are born, the father shares the burden of raising the new arrivals. While the mother stays in the den to nurse and care for the babies, he will bring her food every four to six hours. When the cubs start coming out of their abode to explore the world, dad will play as well as groom and lick them to show his affection. Once the young foxes grow bigger, he stops delivering food to them. This is daddy’s tough love, even though it’s hard for him to do. He hides food nearby, and covers it with twigs and leaves, to train his young cubs to forage it for themselves. Eventually, dad begins to take his offspring on trips to teach them the survival skills needed for life. As you can see, dad red foxes love their little ones as much as their mothers. What attentive and indulgent fathers they are! Male seahorses, and male pipefish and seadragons who are close relatives, are the most well-known and extraordinary fathers of the animal kingdom, as they are the only males that undergo pregnancy. A seahorse dad can carry up to 2,000 eggs for 2 to 4 weeks in his belly pouch and does similar things that a human mother does. This pouch operates very much the same as a human mom’s uterus, providing the embryos with nutrients and oxygen, removing their wastes, supplying antibacterial molecules, and regulating the blood flow, salinity, and temperature levels for the little ones. When the young seahorses are ready to be born, their father gives birth through energetically-costly muscular contractions, just like human mothers. As a dedicated and adorable caring father, seahorse dads truly deserve a cool daddy recognition!

The Marvelous Abilities of Birds, Part 1 of 2

00:14:49

The Marvelous Abilities of Birds, Part 1 of 2

There have been many stages in our evolution that contributed to our ability to fly. For example, we had to develop delicate wings, strong chest muscles, and several different kinds of feathers. Humans have long admired and envied our ability to fly. They have experimented and invented all kinds of means to duplicate what we do naturally in the sky. Since we birds are often far above the ground, we needed a number of adaptations to give us great eyesight. First, we have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, relative to body size, which helps us to have very keen vision. From the outside, our eyes may appear small, but on the inside our eyes are so big that most of us cannot move them. Among warm-blooded animals, our ability to regenerate retinal neurons is outstanding. Scientists are trying to understand how it works, and believe there may be a way to unlock this ability in humans. If so, it would open the door to treatments for a wide variety of eye diseases.

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

00:12:37

Animals in the Snow Wonderland

Today we will explore incredible winter lands with amazing wild animals. Penguins, the iconic animal of the Antarctic, are well known for their endurance in extreme conditions, with the emperor penguin able to withstand temperatures of -30°C with winds blasting at 200 kilometers per hour. Generally speaking, warm-blooded animals that inhabit cold regions are fairly big. Large animals have a smaller surface to volume ratio and thus relatively less surface area through which to lose heat. The smallest Antarctic penguin, the rockhopper, weighs an average of 2.5 kilograms, and the largest, the emperor penguin, is around 30 kilograms in weight. Male emperor penguins also huddle together in groups of several thousand to survive the biting wind and relentless cold. Scientists have recorded temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius within the huddle. Keep warm guys! Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, truly love the snow, particularly the young ones. They roll about and play in it. The youngsters make snowballs, carry them around, and have fun with them. They even play a game of trying to take each other’s snowballs! These macaques are great leapers and tree climbers, which they take advantage of to move around when there is thick snow. To cope with the icy-cold temperatures, snow leopards are protected by thick gray or creamy yellow hair with grayish-black spots. Their broad feet, which are covered with fur, act as natural snowshoes. They use their long tails as blankets to protect sensitive body parts against the biting mountain chill. These tremendous jumpers can cross up to 15 meters in one leap. The snow leopard is listed as an endangered species, with only about 3,500 to 7,000 left in the wild.It has been my pleasure to show you how we animals adapt to the cold winter with heavy snow. Despite our amazing ability to withstand the freezing temperatures, we would much appreciate it if you would take extra care when walking through our habitats to not disturb us during our most vulnerable time in winter.

The Extraordinary Water Walkers

00:15:23

The Extraordinary Water Walkers

Have you ever watched a kung fu movie and been amazed at the martial art masters’ incredible feat of walking on water with lightning speed? For we animals, it’s not a mystery. More than 1,200 species of animals can walk on water. Some are great “slappers,” and others are “gliders.” These are two terms scientists use to describe how certain animals cross the water’s surface. In today’s program, we will meet some of these amazing water-walkers. Many larger animals are excellent slappers. One of them is the basilisk lizard, which is my kind! You can spot us in the rainforests of southern Mexico, Central America, and even into northwestern Colombia. We stay in trees and always love to be near water. Do you know what our secret trick of striding over the water is? When we run quickly on our rear legs, the fringed skin connecting our long toes unfolds in the water and creates a pocket of air to keep us from sinking. We also use our long tail as a counter-weight so that we can maintain balance and keep our posture upright. The common and curious Asian gecko is found in many warm climates in Asia and elsewhere and seems to defy gravity, as they run upside-down along ceilings. Another incredible animal is motivated to walk on water all due to love. Western grebes, found in western North America, are well known for their rhythmic water dance called “rushing.” The next time when you see us animals, no matter how small we are, take a minute to observe us, and you will find some hidden talents.
