Be Kind to Animals Week, Part 2 of 2

In fact, I truly hope everyone can be loving and compassionate to all beings, every week of every year! And being vegan is the best way to start showing your gentleness and compassion to animals. Animals are more than just wonderfully intelligent. They are selfless, loving and devoted friends, as well as parents and spouses. No matter what species, if you give them love and respect, they will love and protect and help you in so many ways, both visibly, and invisibly.

Gerenuks – the Graceful Gazelles of East Africa

We are considered one of the most elegant antelopes because we have superb balance and grace while eating. Our strong hind legs and wedge-shaped hooves enable us to stand erect and reach branches that are more than two meters above the ground. In African folklore, my kind of animal is often referred to as “the Queen of Humbleness.” Gerenuks like me have been around for more than 7,000 years. You can see us in some ancient Egyptian art.

The Marvelous Animal Sea Purifiers

Have you ever wondered how, outside of the trash like plastic or wastewater that may sadly end up there, the seas remain so pure? If you guessed that it is the amazing sea ecosystems that keep the oceanic environments so beautiful, you are right! It is known that there are more than one billion microbes in a liter of seawater. Some animals, such as sponges, clams, oysters, and mussels, keep the ocean pure by continuously filtering the water. A cleaner wrasse works about four hours a day and can clean more than 2000 “customers” daily!

Animals Are Love

00:18:37

Animals Are Love

When we love the animals, our love will naturally develop. Those of you who are taking care of dogs, birds, or other pets, know how it’s like. When you are with them, and when you look at them, you just want to love them. You can’t think of anything else, and there is nothing you can do about it. You just want to love them and pamper them. Then, naturally your home is permeated with this ambience of love. It will engulf our whole house, our home, and eventually it will spread to the world. If there is such a loving atmosphere in every home, the world will definitely be in peace.

Animals Love Music!

Animals Love Music!

Besides enjoying the music played by people, we animals are brilliant at playing the piano, drums, and other instruments to create our own melodies. This horse is tickling the keys like no other. Just like some of the jazz greats, a terrific freestyle piece on the keyboard! Nora(a cat), an animal shelter rescuee originally from New Jersey, USA, is famous for her piano concertos. She plays daily much to the delight of her caregiver Betsy Alexander, a piano teacher. She even plays duets with her human friends!

The Unhurried Lifestyle of Sloths

The Unhurried Lifestyle of Sloths

The slogan of International Sloth Day:“ Learn from a sloth to enjoy every moment of your daily life.” We sloths are famous for being incredibly slow and spending most of our lives hanging upside down in trees. Perhaps you are wondering exactly how slow we sloths are. Well, for example, while we are up in trees, it takes us about a minute to cover four meters. We’re even slower on the ground. Actually, we came to be called sloths because of our very slow metabolism, low body temperature, and deliberate movements. It’s not that we’re lazy; it’s just the way we evolved.

The Heavenly Attributes of Animals

We animals have many seen and unseen abilities ̶ such as giving individuals timely assistance during dangerous situations as well as helping with everyday tasks. Though we may not speak any human language, our pure, unconditional loving qualities can transcend communication barriers and bring much happiness and meaning into people’s lives. We have the honor to profile several animals on our program who have heroically aided or saved people or other animals because of the true love in their hearts!

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 1 of 2

3D Printing Technology: Working Wonders for Animals, Part 1 of 2

Three-D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process that builds 3D objects by layering materials one by one from a digital file. Compared to conventional manufacturing, including injection molding and subtractive production, 3D printing is more cost-effective as it doesn’t require expensive molds. It also uses less material, energy and labor, generates less waste, and is faster for both production and revision. One of the most exciting and game-changing 3D printing application fields is veterinary medicine. Thanks to 3D printing technologies, these animals now have a much greater chance of living an extended and healthy life. In December 2014, a young male chestnut-mandibled toucan named Grecia in Costa Rica was a tragic victim of animal abuse and lost the upper half of his beautiful beak. Grecia accepted the artificial beak made of special nylon, and he has become a happy bird. He shook off his depression and quickly learned to use his new beak to bathe, eat and preen himself. In July 2019, Lorraine Young noticed her beloved Andy, a seven-year-old dachshund, was unable to walk on all four legs. Andy became the first canine patient with this disease to benefit from 3D printing technology. The veterinary team created an exact 3D printed replica of Andy’s spine from his CT scan images. As the 3D model could bend and move like Andy’s actual spine, doctors could examine it and decide how to proceed during the operation. Andy’s operation and recovery went very well: When Lorraine went to visit him with some family members a few days after the procedure, Andy ran to them – wobbly, but wagging his tail and giving kisses to everyone’s delight.

The Giraffe: Elegant Giant of Africa

Have you ever quickly stood up and felt faint or light-headed? The unsettling sensation can be caused by a drop in blood flow to your brain. We have the unique ability to not pass out from dizziness when we lower our head to ground level to drink water and then lift our head up again. Another special way we can control our body has even assisted astronauts with space travel. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists in the US observed that baby giraffes, to prevent blood pooling in their legs, rapidly thicken or inflate their veins after birth to walk.

Jesus and the Animals

Jesus and the Animals

The Essene scriptures, which are separate from the books of the Bible, illustrate Yeshua’s (or Jesus’s) love and compassion for animals in many stories. In one parable, Jesus gives a small kitten food and drink. He asked His disciple to take care of the kitten. In the Essene scriptures, Jesus gives the Holy Humane Law from God. One of the Holy Humane Laws is vegetarianism, which Jesus stated as :“Ye shall not eat the flesh, nor drink the blood of any slaughtered creature, nor yet anything which bringeth disorder to your health or senses.”

Caring for Furry Pals During a Lockdown, Part 1 of 2

Caring for Furry Pals During a Lockdown, Part 1 of 2

"Tender-hearted viewers, I’m Max, an orange tabby cat, and this is my sister Nala. She is a potcake dog, a Caribbean term for a mixed breed canine. We both are adopted animal companions and follow a compassionate vegan diet. Nala, did you notice, when our country enforced a coronavirus lockdown for months, that things changed? The streets were deserted, shops were closed, and all the tourists were gone. How about us companion animals? Can we get this virus?" "It's not entirely clear. Currently, experts believe that if a dog or cat has it, the chances of passing it on to people are low. However, human caregivers are adivsed to keep their animal children indoors to prevent transmission of the virus." "Yes, it’s safer to do that. It protects them from carrying the virus back home." "Also, human companions should practice healthy habits around their furry kids, such as washing their hands with soap and water before and after interacting with them, and disinfecting their paws by wiping them with a soft cloth and a vinegar-water mix before coming inside. They should not let other people touch their furry kids, or pet other people’s animal companions out of an abundance of caution." "That’s very important. During a lockdown, where do people get food for their furry children?" "They can cook nutritious vegan food for us if commercial vegan cat or dog food is not available." "That’s good. Having fruits and veggies can provide vitally important nutrition for our immune system. Mom always prepares veggie food for us. That’s why we are so healthy. Apart from having cooked meals for us, Mom spent more time with us during the lockdown to keep us entertained." "To lighten a furry companion’s mood during a lockdown, people can play games with him or her to cheer them up. It’s not only fun but also gives the animal friend some exercise." "We hope you take good care of yourself and stay healthy so that you can protect both your beloved human and furry family members during these challenging times."

True Love Between Animals

True Love Between Animals

Shiro first headed for the beach. Without any hesitation, he ran into the water and started swimming. The distance from Aka to Zamami is 3.6 kilometers, and the seas can be rough. Altogether, it took about three hours for Shiro to reach the island. There, waiting for him, was a beautiful female mongrel named Marilyn. That is why Shiro repeatedly swam back and forth between the islands. The love story of the two dogs became so popular throughout Japan that a movie was made about it in 1988 entitled, “I Want to See Marilyn.”

Finless Porpoises: The Wondrous Smiling Angels

Finless Porpoises: The Wondrous Smiling Angels

We feel we are quite unique and very intelligent. For example, scientists have concluded our smarts to be comparable to that of the powerful vegan primate, the wise gorilla. We are also known to be very sensitive to our surroundings. For example, our species can sense the change in the air when heavy winds and rains are on their way. As a result, we become more active and expressive in our movements, chasing each other around playfully thus causing ripples and waves on the river’s surface. Local humans who have been astute enough to pay attention to us have been able to predict the coming of a storm whenever they see us act in this way.

Cool Cooperation: Animals and Plants Balancing Nature

Cool Cooperation: Animals and Plants Balancing Nature

Symbiosis is the interaction of two different organisms living together, usually with mutual benefits. There are many examples of symbiosis in our world’s diverse ecosystems, one of which is the leafcutter ants and their special crop. The original farmers on earth are thought to be the leafcutter ants. They have been intensively farming fungi in the tropical rainforests of South America as early as 60 million years ago. These ants forage for vegetation, not intending to eat it as food, but to munch the leaves into a pulp for fungi to eat which are the real source of nutrition for the ants.

Sea Angels: The Glamorous Light Makers

Sea Angels: The Glamorous Light Makers

Icelanders are surrounded by the ocean, which is so mysterious and superabundant in flora and fauna, well beyond humanity’s imagination. Please take a closer look at our luminescent body, wing-like fins, and how gracefully we flutter our wings. We love to cluster together. Don’t we look like heavenly beings flying through the blue skies? there are two groups of sea angels. The larger subspecies, like me, inhabit icy regions and can be up to 8.5 centimeters long. The smaller subspecies live in warmer tropical waters and measure 1 to 2 centimeters in length. Once upon a time, there were snails developing skills to live in water to find a better place to survive. They ventured into an unknown world, the oceans. They were sea snails finding ways to inhabit the bottom of the sea. Some sea snails wanting to live closer to the water’s surface were courageous enough to give up their shells and evolved into a totally new species, the sea angels. Although we lost our eyes during the evolutionary process, we can use the two horns on our head to sense our surroundings. We also have greatly improved our swimming skills. We can swim horizontally and vertically. Generally, we enjoy swimming upward in a very slow and graceful rhythm, like flying angels, and this is how we acquired our beautiful name. Many studies have indicated that the life span of a sea angel is one to two years. The light we emit is called bioluminescence. Like us, over three-fourths of marine beings can produce light, mostly blue and green in color. Making light is not something mysterious or supernatural. It is created through chemical reactions or made by host bacteria. We depend on you to keep the seas clean and healthy so please minimize your purchases of single-use plastics and, of course, stick to plant-based seafood only!

The Wonderful World of Whales

00:17:52

The Wonderful World of Whales

We whales are mysterious beings and one of the oldest aquatic mammals in our world. Although we live in the oceans, 50 million years ago, our ancestors lived on land. Today, we are living almost everywhere in the world’s oceans, from the North to the South Pole. We have a lot of human-like features - we breathe air, have a little hair, are warm-blooded, and feed our babies with milk. There are two main families: baleen and toothed whales. Baleen whales are generally huge, especially the great blue whale, considered the biggest animal in the world. The biggest of the toothed whale family are my cousins, the sperm whales. They are known for having the largest brain in the world. Beluga whales, the only white-colored whales, thus also known as white whales, live in the Arctic Ocean. They live and migrate in pods. Another talent they have is being able to swim backward. More and more studies prove that whales are essential to the marine ecosphere and help maintain our earth’s health. We are some of the most intelligent and compassionate inhabitants of the ocean. We help to mitigate climate change by boosting the production of phytoplankton that absorb 40% of the CO2 in the air and release 50% of the oxygen found in our atmosphere.

Through the Generations - Animal Cultural Traditions

Many people think that culture is a characteristic only found in human societies. I am thrilled to tell you that modern scientific research shows that animals including primates, cetaceans, birds, fish and insects also have traditions that are transmitted across their social groups and to new generations. We animals that live in a community are just like humans, having our norms, traditions and cultural practices that characterize who we are and help us to adapt to our particular ecological niches.

The Laughing Kookaburra of Australia

If you’ve never heard a kookaburra singing, just think of your laughter after hearing a really funny joke. That gives you an idea of the echoing sound of the ever-chuckling kookaburra! In indigenous Australian culture, kookaburras are viewed as emotionally fragile birds. Making fun of us can hurt our feelings, thus taking away our joyous laugh which serves to wake up our world. It is believed that great respect should be shown to us at all times to keep harmony and happiness on our planet.

Wings of Love, Part 1 of 2: The Romantic Bowerbird

00:13:55

Wings of Love, Part 1 of 2: The Romantic Bowerbird

They are among the best representatives of birds, as they have an aesthetic sense, and express their love and affection through art. There are 20 species of bowerbirds living in Australia and Papua New Guinea. With most varieties, the male builds a sophisticated structure called a bower for courtship purposes. The range of objects he gathers is amazing; fruits, flowers, feathers, and even human-made items like buttons, bottle caps, glass marbles, ballpoint pens, you name it! The male bowerbirds need to be excellent artists to win a lady's heart, as females are style-oriented and exceptionally choosy. She is the one to decide if the bower is true artwork, and, along with other factors that are considered, selects the partner with the most beautiful bower. That's why the male bowerbird makes his structure so eye-catching, so as to impress the hen initially to earn a place in the finals. Even their eggs are intricate works of art. Many human beings have been inspired to create their own artworks by observing the skillful designs of the adored bowers. A well-known American scientist, Dr. Jared Diamond, referred to the bowerbirds as the “most human-kind of all birds.” Bowerbird art has inspired humanity's contemporary art. So the bowerbird's repurposing habit has influenced people to a degree. Jane Perkins, who is known for her recycled art, has also adopted similar practices. She uses discarded materials, mostly plastic, to re-interpret masterpieces of past artists. And she named her website. “Blue Bowerbird.” Lovely! In addition, the bowerbird has inspired many plastic recycling initiatives as well. For example, Qantas Airways had the world's first-ever zero-waste commercial flight in May 2019. This event initiated the company’s mission to remove 100 million pieces of single-use plastic from flights by the end of 2021, thus reducing the inflight rubbish generated by 75%. What is the name of this noble initiative? The Bowerbird Project!

Veterinarian Dr. Jonathan Bach - Healing with Animal Acupuncture, Part 2 of 2

Now, the common misconception is that those needles must be dipped in medication, steroids, something. And I say, no, no, no, they’re just stainless steel needles. There’s no magic here. There’s no medicine. When we put the needles in the acupoints, that’s where the action actually starts to occur. Oftentimes when a patient has the acupuncture, it does have a calming effect, and most clients will report that for the rest of the day or the next day, their pet is more quiet than usual.
