Traditonal Musical Instrument: Enchanting Mandolin, Part 2 of 2

The exquisite sounds of the mandolin resonate back over a millennium, with recorded instances of mandolin music from the Medieval period (500-1400AD), up to the Renaissance (1400-1600), through the Baroque period (1600-1740AD) and onwards, to our current era. In Medieval times, the lute, a precursor to the modern mandolin, was widely played and appreciated. One branch of its evolution was the mandore, which arose in the Renaissance period and in turn, during the Baroque period, brought forth what we now call the mandolin.

Friends of Eternity - A Special Gathering with Supreme Master Ching Hai and Cherished Artists, Part 18

Mr. Paterson will kindly give his remarks and introduce his husband, the gifted singer-songwriter René Lamontagne, for a special performance. Mr. Paterson, welcome!“I want to say that it was such a pleasure to direct ‘Loving the Silent Tears’ because Your beautiful words filled us all with such inspiration that we enjoyed every single moment. It was hard work, but every time we heard the words that You sent to us that we got to play with and create with, it just took us to another level, it took us to a special place. Not only what You do with the world, but what You did with us. And I thank You for that from the bottom of my heart. From the time we got off the plane all we’ve experienced is love and it’s an exceptional kind of love. it’s a love that knows no boundaries or borders or color or race or labels, or nationalities. ” Wonderful. Thank you. Such a catchy and beautiful song.

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most prominent Post-Impressionist painters and is generally regarded as the greatest Dutch painter since Rembrandt van Rijn. After deciding to be an artist at the age of twenty-seven, he produced nearly 900 paintings and more than 1,000 works on paper in the short ten-year span of his artistic career. Through his arbitrary use of color, emphatic, unrestrained brushst

History of the Heavenly Harp, Part 2 of 2

Then what must it be like for the player of the harp? Kim says she feels as though she’s become a vehicle of God. Her thoughts can be explained by her favorite prayer: “Make me as a hollow reed from which the pith of self has been blown, so that I may become a pure channel through which Thy love may flow to others.” Imagine how the true heavenly melodies of the harp can uplift and elevate our souls. For spiritual practitioners of the Quan Yin Method, as imparted by Supreme Master Ching Hai, the inner music of the harp and other inner Heavenly Sounds are daily reminders of the glorious Kingdom of Heaven.

Traditonal Musical Instrument: Enchanting Mandolin, Part 1 of 2

Although there are many variations, the mandolin generally has a hollow wooden body that includes a soundboard with a teardrop shape. Today, the mandolin plays a vital role in both orchestral and bluegrass music. As Mr. Nigel Woodhouse, a professional mandolinist who has played with many world-renowned orchestras and ensembles, explains: “… the mandolin has two of each string; they’re close pairs intended to be played as one string. It’s the doubling of the strings which gives the mandolin its particular resonance and sustain.”

Visionary Artist Elen Ture (vegan): Creating for Animal Liberation and the Planet, Part 1 of 2

Elen Ture is a self-taught painter from Anatolia of Western Asia and Turkey. Her commitment to animal liberation and environmental protection is evident in her inspiring artworks. Born in Paris, France, in 1977, Elen graduated from the Atelier des Peintres en Decors (Decorative Painters’ Workshop) in Montmartre and began her successful career as an artist in 2012.“I was a vegetarian when I was nine years old. I was convinced that eating an animal was just not right. For me, it wasn’t a ‘normal’ thing. I’m over 40, and I’m doing pretty well, I must say. I went totally vegan because when I saw what milk is about six years ago, notably with L214, I stopped right away.”“I have one of my frescoes called ‘The Forgotten Ones.’ I went to the Museum of Anthropology in Paris to make this famous fresco, which tells of the suffering of fish, because they are simply forgotten. You can’t see how they suffer. It takes them eight hours to die when out of water. We don’t kill them right away. It's terrible to see that man has come to this point – to the point of destroying all life forms on this Earth without any scruples, without any heart after all, and without respect for life itself. Now to paint, you must have this form of spirituality, in which you have to be free in your head, in your body, and in your stomach. We can’t eat just anything.”“I paint animals a lot, but differently; in fact, I sublimate them. I sublimate the animal! The animal has quite strong expressions, very close to the human, after all. If you add arms to a fish, it changes everything. We wouldn’t want to eat the fish.” “You have to have that vision, actually, to be able to paint, to understand that this suffering, the fish can’t express it. But maybe I, as a painter, I can show it to others and create this awareness.” “With art, I think that anyone who can paint can raise awareness amongst people about the animal cause in their own way.”

Buddhist Chant Remix with the Venerable Yogetsu Akasaka

In Buddhist tradition, chanting often serves as a means to prepare one’s mind for holy communion, meditation, or for certain sacred rituals and ceremonies. In Japan, it is typically accompanied by three types of musical instruments: the mokugyo, the keisu and the taiko. Without using any of these traditional instruments, 37-year-old Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, the venerable Yogetsu Akasaka, is cre

Faran Ensemble, Part 2 of 2

Since its establishment in 2009, the Faran Ensemble has travelled extensively around the world, performing in concerts and various musical festivals. The band has released two albums, and won the grand prize at the 2014 international Jewish Music Festival of Amsterdam. They were selected as the best composition, and best Israeli talent. The Faran Ensemble often plays or records their music in nature, such as in the desert, the mountains, or in the woods. What’s the reason behind it, and how does nature and other surroundings influence them? “All our composition is original, and very influenced from the landscape that’s around us. Most of the times, meeting in nature, and creating in nature, and it’s connecting us and our music, and gives us this silence to create for. An inspiration.” Not only do the band members play in nature, studios, and concerts, but they also reach out to people in need and use music to lift them up. “They’re learning, they can beat the drum the right way. And they can speak through the drum. They can play rhythms. And its wonderful and after a while, maybe after two, three, four months, they have so much knowledge, and they can play very good. And it makes them calm, it makes them calm, it makes them also to believe in themselves that they can do things. And that’s for these special kids. I hope we brought them some comfort, hope.”

Traditional Instrument: Marimba - The Wood that Sings

According to Daniel Rager’s publication entitled The History of the Marimba, “The Marimba in its simplest form originated[…]long ago. It was one of the earliest melodic instruments made by [hu]man[s]and references suggest it was widespread throughout Asia and Africa.” Indeed, according to the American marimbist and ethnomusicologist Vida Chenoweth, approximately fifteen hundred years ago, a group of Malayo-Polynesian speaking peoples migrated to Africa, probably to Madagascar, and carried a xylophone-type instrument with them.
